The rock of Embrun, its ramparts, gardens, canals and the Durance river.

Another way to discover Embrun. Walk on the rock from the viewpoint, then under the rock with its gardens and canals, a short detour to discover the Durance before completing the circular route in Embrun via the cathedral, the Maison des Chanonges, and the Tour Brune.

Description of the walk

(S/E) Start from the archbishop's garden. When you reach the viewpoint and look out over the valley, turn left and walk along the edge of the rock. The plain is on your right. Leave the garden via the Promenade de l'Archevêché. You will come to a car park through an opening in a wall. Continue along the edge of the rock, leaving the Salle de la Poudrière and the Jardin du Roc on your left. Go through the gate in the rampart that leads to a wooden bridge and walk along the football stadium. Continue along the first building and then the retirement home. At this point, the rock is less steep.

(1). At the crossroads, take the path on the right that descends towards Le Chaffal. Follow this path to the tarmac road to Saint-André, which you follow on the right until you pass the transformer. Then take a small road on the right that leads you under the Roc. Ignore the dirt track on the left that leads to the stadium and continue straight on towards the small gardens and canals.
This path runs alongside the rock and you can see the path you have taken since the start, the ramparts, then the belvedere with its rounded stone overhang.

(2) When you are directly above the starting point, take a fairly wide dirt track on the left that leads towards some houses. Follow this path to the small tarmac road that runs alongside the Durance. Take this Route de la Digue on the right along the Durance.

(3) Just before a small green-painted bridge, take the first tarmac road on the right which follows a small canal coming from Embrun. Continue along this path, keeping the canal on your left (the Chaffal , known as the Moulineaux torrent), even when the road is no longer tarmac. This path begins to climb with the Roc on your right, then turns into a tarmac walkway that climbs steeply to the Leader Price car park .

(4) At the very beginning of the car park, there is a wooden staircase which is also used by aGR® trail, which you will follow to the right. Walk along a fence with the Embrun Hospital Centre on your right. At the crossroads, take Rue Pierre et Marie Curie on the left. At the stop sign, turn right into Rue Émile Guigues and head towards Notre-Dame du-Réal Cathedral.

(5) Go around the cathedral on the left. On the left, you will see the Maison des Chanonges and then the Tour Brune.

Return to the Archbishop's garden, our starting point (S/E).

Notes

Easy hike, but with a 100 m descent on a stony path (wear good shoes) and a steep climb on the way back.

Worth a visit

This hike allows you to discover:

  1. The surrounding mountains from the viewpoint, from Mont Orel to Morgon.
  1. What remains of the ancient ramparts of Embrun. They were largely destroyed with the arrival of the railway in 1882. The ramparts did not protect Embrun, which was besieged and then invaded several times. Notably by the warlord (then Protestant) Lesdiguières. It was said that once the city had been taken, this leader invited the city's dignitaries to a feast during which he served a stuffed pig. He invited the prior of the Cordeliers to cut into it, saying: "Here, start the work, as you do, so shall I do"... The unfortunate prior realised that if he tore off a leg of the pig, the Protestant would do the same to him. So he took out his knife, lifted the pig's tail, stuck it in its rear end and rummaged around for a good while, then withdrew it and buried it in his mouth. It is said that Lesdiguières laughed, but we do not know the ending (source: La saga de l'Embrunais by Jean Vandenhove). The defensive system was redesigned by Vauban. We pass under part of the remaining ramparts before descending the rock and find other remains of ramparts at the Leader Price, which we cross via a wooden staircase.
  1. A powder magazine was built around 1700, a small vaulted building with external reinforcements, but it was quickly abandoned because it was too close to the fortifications and therefore exposed to mortar fire. It is now used as an activity and concert hall.
  1. Since the construction of a dyke to channel the Durance at the end of the 16th century, the plains below the rock have benefited from its alluvial riches without suffering the whims of this rebellious river. There are numerous gardens with small structures ranging from DIY garden sheds to huts converted into small houses. This plain, which still has a few farms, is protected. Of particular note is the system of canals with sluice gates (sliding gates to divert water) and weirs (gates with semi-circular slates, now replaced by metal sheets) which are raised in turn to irrigate the gardens. This irrigation system dates back to 1895, when the dyke was built. It is managed by the ASA (Association Syndicale Autorisée), which distributes the water and sometimes manages conflicts between those upstream and those downstream. (source: La Durance, April 2015)
  1. La Maison des Chanonges, the oldest house in Embrun.
  1. The Tour Brune, dating from the 13th century.
  1. Embrun Cathedral, Notre-Dame du Real (5)

No difficulty following the route. The final climb is a little tough in very hot weather but short. Beautiful view of Embrun.
The little green bridge: actually, it's the railing that's green; the road continues without you really seeing that it's a bridge, so stay alert at this point.

Average for the reliability of the description, as we did not see the small green bridge and the canal coming from Embrun, but the path is easy to find again.
