Mont Guillaume

This is a pleasant route to one of the main and most beautiful viewpoints of Lake Serre-Ponçon.
Due to the large number of intersections, I recommend using the Visorando app.

Description of the walk

Access: From Embrun, take the N2094 in the town centre towards Briançon-Gap, then just before the post office, turn right and follow the D465 towards Caléyère. Pass the hamlet and then the castle of the same name. Continue to the car park on the right-hand side of the road. It is about 10 km from the Embrun post office on a fully paved road.

(S/E) From the car park, take the track on the left for about 30 metres towards Mont Guillaume via Pré Clos. At the sign, turn right onto the path towards Mont Guillaume and Chapelle des Séyères for 200 metres.

(1) At the intersection and sign, go straight ahead towards the chapel. The path climbs through a thick forest of larch trees to reach a lane.

(2) At the sign, turn 90° to the left, still heading towards the Chapelle des Séyères and Mont Guillaume. Follow this lane for about 80 metres.

(3) At the next sign, continue in the same south-westerly direction and follow this lane for 980 metres until you reach the next intersection.

(4) Leave the lane and turn right onto the path towards Mont Guillaume. The path climbs gently up the hillside through a forest of larch and Scots pine trees, then crosses a wide dirt track. Our path eventually turns into a lane.
From here, pay close attention. A cairn on the left side of the lane marks the starting point of a small path that branches off at an angle.

(5) At the cairn, take this path on the left. It climbs for about 20 metres. Cross the wide dirt track and continue along the path until you reach the next well-marked intersection.

(6) At the sign, take a sharp left turn onto the Widman trail towards Mont Guillaume.
A little further on, when you reach a crossroads (path, lane) that is not shown on the IGN map, continue in the same direction. The lane turns into a path and crosses a rocky area before coming out at another signposted crossroads.

(7) Take the lane on the left, cross the Sainte-Marthe torrent, and continue to the Chapelle des Séyères chapel, then immediately after, in the same direction, to the fountain of the same name. Then take the trail south to the next intersection.

(8) At the sign, take the hairpin turn to the right towards Mont Guillaume. This path leaves the forest and climbs through rhododendron bushes and piles of boulders. Take the hairpin turn to the left and cross the hillside (southeast).

(9) To make the final ascent to the summit, at the intersection, take the path on the right, which climbs more gently. After a hairpin bend, the path continues along the side of the north ridge of the summit, and it is not uncommon to encounter some snowfields at the beginning of the season. A final, steeper climb takes you to the summit cross and the Chapelle du Mont Guillaume.

(10) Return by the same route to the car park (S/E).

Practical information

I would like to point out that the section of the trail between (5) and (6) shown on the IGN map does not correspond to reality and is very poorly positioned. The IGN map is therefore completely unreliable for this section.
You should therefore refer to my GPS track recorded at this location.

At (7), there is indeed a trail junction. A trail starting from the hairpin bend is not shown on the IGN map.

Finally, we built a cairn (6) to mark a Y-shaped trail junction where there were no signs.
Please feel free to add stones to this cairn when you pass by.

I made a video with a panorama and the names of the peaks, which shows the route and the main points along the way.

A magnificent, very varied hike. Access to the forest car park from Embrun is via a long single-lane road, which requires caution when passing other vehicles. The route through the Clot Jarry forest is closed due to forestry work. You need to join the path that comes from Muandes de Bourlinche. After the Mont Guillaume chapel, it is well worth continuing along the ridges, where the view of the lake and the southern Alps is breathtaking. The descent via the Col de Trempa-Latz is steep but easy and joins the uphill trail or leads directly to the Séyères chapel by following the torrent. Allow for a 1,000 m elevation gain for the entire circuit.

A beautiful hike, shaded in the first part (up to the Seyères chapel) and increasingly open as you approach the summit (2,552 metres). We saw marmots basking in the sun at the entrance to their burrows in the last part of the trail.
The summit offers a magnificent view of Lake Serreponçon, as well as a 360° view of the entire region.
We left the forest car park just before 9 a.m. and climbed to the summit before descending to the first chapel for lunch at 12.30 p.m. There is plenty of water nearby to cool off.
We recommend this hike, even though it is busy in the height of summer.
We came back down via the forest path. We strongly advise against this, as it is not very shaded and not particularly enjoyable. In fact, we left it as soon as it got close to the path we had taken on the way up.

It is important to follow the author's route, which is the best way to reach Mont Guillaume. The other paths are either closed due to forestry work or less interesting as they are wide forest tracks.
Otherwise, the hike is fairly easy, with a steady elevation gain and magnificent vegetation featuring martagon lilies in abundance.

The hike is very well explained and the route is perfect. Be sure to follow the route rather than the yellow signs, as the paths are more difficult and not maintained. So stick to the route! There are still many trees to climb over, as they are still on the ground

A superb hike that begins with a beautiful larch forest. Numerous alpine flowers can be found along the route (July). There is an easily passable snowfield. Marmots can be spotted. Magnificent view of Lake Serre-Ponçon from the chapel terrace. You can even see Mont Ventoux in the distance.

A great effort rewarded with a splendid panoramic view.
There were still a few snowfields to cross, including one that had to be traversed...
We finished at the Trempa-Latz pass. This offers a view over Lac Brun.
Be careful with the route suggested by Google Maps depending on your starting point: part of it is not accessible by car!

Don't bother too much with the description, which is out of date (cairn???), but follow the markings in place, which are very clear. The path is well laid out, the slope is steady, so the climb is not difficult.
There is a beautiful view from the summit.

After a slightly steep start, you can enjoy this beautiful forest without any real difficulty. The route is clear and well marked. We didn't see the ploughed section or the small cairn on the left.
Below the summit, cairns offer a shortcut to the top, but it's not without effort. It's better to go around via the switchbacks on the main trail.
Once at the summit, don't hesitate to continue your walk along the ridge, where you will discover the landscape towards Gapençais.
Time: 5 hours with a break at the chapel.

I couldn't upload the route to my Movescount app for some reason. So I created one myself, which I'll test this weekend. I'll share it if it turns out to be good. Thanks for the description, I'll take that with me too!

We followed the Widman route (yellow), which differs from the one provided at the end and is less steep. A very beautiful hike, thank you very much
