Le Revard via Pas de Rebollion and Col du Pertuiset

Le Revard is a plateau offering magnificent views of both the Northern Alps around Mont Blanc and Lake Bourget at its feet. This circular route climbs from the edge of the old cable car station, ascending the very steep Pas du Rebollion off-trail, then, after a route passing through several bumps on the plateau, descends via the classic Pertuiset trail.
Route modified on 3/07/2023 between (6) and (9) to avoid private land, then on 20/10/2025 between (4) and (5) to take into account changes in the equipment.

Description of the walk

From Aix-les-Bains or exit 13 of the A41 motorway (Drumettaz-Clarafond), climb to Mouxy then to the hamlet of Les Mentens. Continue up the Route de Pertuiset until you reach a hairpin bend on the left, 500 m before the old Revard cable car station. Park in the bend, or better still, about ten metres above it (car park in the forest).

(S/E) Head south-east on the marked trail that climbs into the forest. You will reach a first crossroads.

(1) Turn left (return trail opposite) and climb steadily up the hairpin bends to the end of a forest track. Leave the track immediately and continue climbing until you reach a path on the left (coming from the Chapelle Saint-Victor) and a flat area equipped for picnics: the Table Ronde.

(2) Head right and climb up to a new, almost passable forest track coming from the left. Take it on the right and cross level towards the south until you reach the junction with the sign indicating 1060 m (it is actually closer to 1100 m).

(3) Take the path climbing up to the left, which winds left and then right, where you will see the cairn marking the start of the Pas de Rebollion.
(Please note that in some years, the cairn may have been destroyed!).

(4) Leave the path at the bend and climb up a steep slope marked with red lines, avoiding fallen trees. The barely visible path leads towards a fault line. The climb straight up the slope passes through four small rocky outcrops equipped with an old cable (the first is the most physically demanding), between which the path passes along a ledge on the left and, above all, under the natural arch associated with this pass.

After the fourth rocky outcrop with a cable (sometimes wetter), the slope levels out in the forest, allowing you to zigzag your way up to the Darèze meadow, which you must climb straight up to re-enter the forest and find the GRP® marked trail at the post named Rebollion.
(Please note that recent reports indicate that the historic cables on the climb have been removed, making this section significantly more difficult.)

(5) Take this path on the left, which goes around the 1,494 m summit and climbs back up to the Fermes crossroads, on the edge of the Route du Revard.

(6) Turn left off the road towards the north onto a track in the mountain pasture, which becomes a path. It runs alongside the road below, then descends through the forest into a small valley, which it climbs up on the right-hand side of the meadow to the summit, marked with orienteering markers (you may see a chasm a few metres to the right). Reach the summit of Le Revard.

(7) After enjoying the view from the summit, descend along the toboggan run to the south-east and turn left to join the path that descends a ski slope to its foot.

(8) Cross the road and climb up the GRP® marked trail opposite. It goes around the top of Villa des Rennes, returns to its access path to climb up to the left, goes around the Corniche hill and descends through the mountain pastures to the Fermes crossroads.

(6) Head west on the GR® trail, following the same route as on the way up, until you reach the Rebollion signpost.

(5) Follow the GR® trail to the left, heading south-east on the Pas du Pertuiset path towards the Col de Pertuiset.

(9) Turn right until you reach a bench.

(10) The bench and the left turn at the edge of the cliff mark the start of the descent. The path winds its way through a corridor between the cliffs and quickly loses altitude via a series of tight then wider hairpin bends. It crosses a long slope to the north-west, returning to the Pas de Rebollion crossroads you passed earlier.

(4) Follow the same route back to the 1060 m signpost.

(3) Turn left towards Verel-Pragondran and Le Malpasset to reach a crossroads where a remarkable pine tree stands.

(11) Leave the path on the left and turn right down the Matatant path, which quickly becomes steep, descends several earthy couloirs and a few rocky passages before rushing down the bed of a steep-sided torrent at the bottom of which there is a crossroads with a sign indicating 640 m (you are actually at 700 m).
Turn right and, on a gentler path, join the uphill path at the first crossroads.

(1) Take the opposite route back to the car park at (S/E).

Notes

Pas de Rebollion is an off-trail route that climbs straight up a steep slope. It is never really exposed, but it is always physically demanding:
- Avoid in wet weather or if there is still snow.
- Four sections of ledges were historically equipped with old cables, which made it useful to wear gloves to climb them. Their removal has transformed these sections into short climbing ledges, making the hike decidedly "very difficult".
- Walking poles are helpful for climbing but can be a hindrance on rocky (ledges) or cable-assisted sections.

To descend the Matatant trail, you have to brake hard, so walking poles are very useful, even in dry weather.

There are a few springs on the way up and pools in the mountain pasture, but the water is not guaranteed to be drinkable. There is a bar and restaurant at the top of Le Revard.

Signposting:
- the trail up to Pertuiset is marked with yellow arrows and older blue lines (and signs at all major crossroads).
- The climb to Pas de Rebollion is marked with numerous red markings.
- On the plateau, part of the route (between Darèze and Les Fermes and the return from Le Revard to Les Fermes) follows the GRP® of the Massif des Bauges.

Worth a visit

The views from both Le Revard and the 1,494 m summit are remarkable, with a 360° panorama, particularly towards Mont Blanc and Lac du Bourget.

The Pertuiset trail is a classic and pleasant route, and therefore relatively busy.

Variations: it is possible to shorten the circular by avoiding the detour to the summit of Le Revard and its crowds:
- by removing the circular round trip loop from the Fermes crossroads (6), as the 1494 m summit offers views that easily rival those from the summit of Le Revard.
- if you have even less time, once you have joined the GRP® after crossing the Darèze meadow (1401 m) (5), turn right to go directly to the Pertuiset trail.

Always be cautious and plan ahead when you're outdoors. Visorando and the author of this route cannot be held responsible for any accidents occurring on this route.

Following various reports on changes to the equipment (removal of old cables), I have revised the guidebook and firmly reclassified it as very difficult.
Thank you for your positive contributions.

As Sylvaine73 pointed out, there are no longer any cables in the "committed" section. However, although the climb is steep and partly off-trail, it does not present any major difficulties or significant risks if you are used to climbing at level T3 E2.

It's clearly not rock climbing (just a little help with your hands). It's very fun.
Personally, I took a rope "just in case" (knowing that the cables had been removed), but we didn't even use it.
It takes about 1.5 hours to walk from the car park to the top of Rebollion, walking at a good pace and climbing directly between points 1 and 11 via the Matatant trail (much more enjoyable going up than down!).

However, avoid periods of excessive wetness/snow and large groups (no more than 4/5 people) as there are rocks and branches balanced precariously between points 4 and 5.

The descent via Pertuiset is very easy (wide winding path)

This route is therefore best suited to hikers who are used to alpine hiking, but it is undoubtedly the most beautiful way to climb up to Le Revard.

It is unfair to give a bad rating. The information was provided in the comment dated 13/08. When this hike was created several years ago, the information was reliable, and the person who described it is not responsible for the changes. A simple comment adding to mine (13/08) stating that there are still no cables would be more than enough. Best regards

Attention, attention. There are no more cables at Pas de Rebollion!

This route is only for people who enjoy rock climbing (bouldering) and are a little reckless (like me...) with the risk of falling rocks when there are several people.

Do not attempt in autumn when the leaves have already fallen, or when the ground is wet.

It is possible to bypass this very difficult and dangerous section.

I'm sorry to give it a bad rating, but it's important to warn people.
Otherwise, the hike is magnificent.

I was looking for a change of scenery, but unfortunately it was ruined by the noise of the motorway, which you can hear throughout the climb up Le Revard, and then by the noise of the road leading to the viewpoint, which was very busy (due to the holidays).
I came across quite a few walkers and runners.
Having missed the junction leading to the "climbing" section and the metal cable on the way up, I decided to follow this path downhill. This was a mistake, as it was very technical and even dangerous on my own.
I covered the 15 km in 5 hours.

Completed on 18/05/2025 No more gloves needed... There was no cairn at the start, so I made a small one... only to realise as I went along that there were no cables. The problem is that once you're committed, it's difficult to turn back. The walk becomes much more exposed. I must admit that even with electric cables, sheathed or not, with or without gloves, I would have appreciated them!!!

A beautiful, long and varied hike, made even more exciting by the crossing of the "famous" Rebollion Pass, a very steep and rocky gorge between the cliffs. With a positive mindset, good physical condition and a little experience with the tricky passages often encountered when hiking in the Bauges, apprehension quickly gives way to the pleasure of climbing this shortcut to Le Revard.
Especially since the effective red markings and cables are reassuring, and there is a beautiful rock arch in the middle of the climb!
The start of the path to Rebollion is not easy to find, as the cairn that is supposed to be in a right-hand hairpin bend is tiny and easy to miss.
Remember to take gloves for the cables.
A big thank you to the author of these very precise and clear guides, which allowed me to discover a great route, stepping a little outside my comfort zone.
Happy hiking!

A very beautiful, challenging and varied hike. The Rebollion Pass requires good physical condition and vigilance. Magnificent views at Mont Revard, with Mont Blanc on one side and Lake Bourget on the other. We found the route very easily thanks to our Visorando subscription. Thank you 🙏

As indicated in the description and by hikers, the climb between points 4 and 5 is tough. In our case, the rock holds were covered with wet leaves and earth. These passages require confidence in your balance and feeling steady on your feet.
Between points 9 and 10, do your best not to stray too far from the D913 road. (You can use the sounds of the road to guide you).

Beautiful hike above Aix-les-Bains. Very difficult from point 4, which takes us off the paths and onto a very steep, slippery climb with climbing sections (basic safety lines) that are not suitable for everyone (very difficult). It is better to follow the return path to climb from this point!

A magnificent hike today!
The Rebollion Pass (stage 4-5) isn't the easiest in wet weather, but it's very beautiful.
Be careful, though, as the first handrail is attached to a small stump that is in an advanced state of decay. It moves when someone pulls on the cable. My wife and I are lightweights, but I think the next heavyweight to pass by could knock it off. It's not easy to do without it, either...
For the return trip, we followed the advice found in other reviews.

Hike done at the end of February, still some snowy areas, especially the paths along the road leading to Le Revard, and generally all the paths from the Col du Pertuiset.
Please note that the Pas de Rebollion is completely impassable, very uneven, covered in dead leaves and trees across the path, and has not been maintained or cleared at all.
The path between points 8 and 10 is private property, guarded in places, so this route is impassable.
Along the D913, the path is difficult to find when snowy, and walking alongside cars is not ideal.

A superb hike, done on a sunny day. The climb is cool under the trees, in magnificent forests. A big plus for the Pas de Rebollion, which is very nice. The start is easy to find, the first red markers are a little faded, but the following ones are clearly visible. This passage is worth it, with a beautiful stone arch and a beautiful view on the climb!
Be careful at points 8 and 9. I don't recommend going to the summit (the view is no better than the one from the Revard viewpoint), but rather taking the path that goes around it to the east and starts along the road. You'll arrive at a car park where you just need to turn right to find the trail again at point 10. The path between points 9 and 10 appears to be permanently closed, as it is private property (a track reserved for sled dog training). We tried to go around it by following the fences, but the wires are not always visible and there is barbed wire on the ground...
The descent is very steep and seems to go on forever! The remarkable fir tree is worth a look.
Many thanks for sharing this hike, which is worth doing again and again!

We did this hike but used a different route, starting from Pugny-Chatenod and passing through Golet de la Pierre, returning via the old funicular railway with a detour to the East Tower (another viewpoint). Despite the heat, the route was shaded by trees. The views are superb despite the heat haze (and pollution?) and make you want to come back when visibility is better.
Duration of the hike: Departure at 9:45 a.m., arrival at Le Revard at 12 p.m. and return to the cars at 4 p.m. (after a hearty snack).
