Description of the walk

Park in one of the car parks in Saint-Véran after paying the toll.

(S) Stay on the road to Saint-Véran, cross the village by turning left at the Reformed Church. Continue straight on, passing the church, and keep following the road until you reach the Grand Canal junction, marked by a yellow sign on a wall.

(1) Turn right onto this street, passing above the Bistrot d’en Ô. Turn left onto a wide track. Stay on this track, keeping left at the junction signposted Chapelle de Clausis. After a left-hand bend, join the Grand Canal track.

(2) Turn right onto it. It quickly turns into a very good path. Continue along this almost level path to reach thefirst hut, the Beauregard hut.

(3) Continue along the path to find asecond hut further on, the Labounnais hut, situated below the path, and, immediately afterwards, reach the junction with the track to the Pic de Château-Renard observatory.

(4) Cross the track and continue straight ahead on the path. Pass the old copper and marble mines, overlooking them, to reach, after a long walk along a balcony path, the junction withthe GR®58, Tour du Queyras.

(5) Leave theGR® and continue straight ahead along the path marked with yellow posts, crossing the Moutière mountain pasture. After crossing a small stream via a footbridge, you will reach the foot of a small cliff.

(6) Begin a short but steep climb, then follow an almost flat path to reach the Refuge de la Blanche above the lake of the same name.

(7) Continue downhill along the wide track. Reach the junction at the Clausis Chapel.
Turn right to go round the chapel. Descend along the path to rejoin the track at the Pont de Clausis crossroads.

(8) Here there are two options:
- turn right onto the track and follow it to the junction with the observatory track, where the car park for the shuttle bus to Saint-Véran is located (E),
- turn left onto theGR®58, marked in red and white, and begin a descent consisting of tight but very easy hairpin bends through the forest. Continue to the junction with the Chapelle Sainte-Élisabeth track.

(9) Leave theGR® here and turn right, crossing the Ruisseau de l’Aigue Blanche via the bridge. Follow a very gently ascending track past the chapel, rejoining the track and then the shuttle bus car park (E).

(E) Take the shuttle bus back to the village. Continue along the road to the crossroads by the Reformed Church. Follow the outward route back to the car park at (S).

Worth a visit

From (2) on this balcony trail, the Tête des Toillies, a magnificent peak clad entirely in black, accompanies the hiker.
From (4), look straight ahead beneath this peak to discover the majestic Clausis Chapel.
(7) The arrival at Lac de la Blanche offers a remarkable view of a large cirque dominated, of course, by the Tête des Toillies, but also, to the east, by the Pic de Caramantran and, to the west, by the Pic de la Farnéiréta and the Tête de Longet, all exceeding 3,000 m.

Between (4) and (5) passage above the mines

It’s best to head back via the GR 58 to Saint-Véran. It’s a bit longer than taking the shuttle on the way back, but it’s a very pleasant route.

Hello
Yes, that’s right, the track is tedious, but I also mentioned in the ‘Whilst’ section:
Note: for those wishing to finish this hike on foot, it is possible to stay on the track to return to Saint-Véran. However, if you wish to finish on foot, it is preferable to turn left before the Clausis bridge and follow the GR®58, marked in red and white, to Saint-Véran.

A lovely walk with the marmots for company.
The lake is magnificent.
The only downside: the walk along the track is a bit long.

A lovely walk, with marmots scampering through the flower-filled fields. One of the best walks of our week in Saint-Véran.
From the car park, we took the little mule track (very pretty) to join the path at the Saint Antoine Oratory. The path passed by the ruins of the copper mine and the Clausis Chapel, leading to Lac de la Blanche. For the return journey, we took the signposted Saint-Véran path, situated between the refuge and the small hut below. A short descent over scree (take care), then across the Moutière mountain pasture, between marmot burrows and numerous streams.
Return via the Grand Canal, which overlooks the valley and the track, passing by the Beauregard hut.

A lovely walk in glorious weather. To avoid the rather uninteresting track, I took the GR58 straight from the car park, which is very pleasant: you walk along the stream, beneath the pine trees. The final stretch up to the chapel is a bit steep: that’s the only challenging part of the route.
The path to the refuge is pleasant and easy.
For the return journey, I took a path opposite the refuge to make a circular route. There was still a bit of snow, which made progress a little more difficult. I thus passed close to the remains of the copper mine, on the track.
At the Saint Antoine Oratory, I turned left onto the mule track to avoid the main path once again: this little path is also very pleasant and no longer.
This made for a 3½-hour outing covering about 17.50 km with an elevation gain of 585 m – I’m keeping up a good pace!!!
