Description of the walk

Start at the Panzoult lake at the southern exit of the village, where there is a shaded car park.

Red markings
On some parts of the route, you will find markings in other colours: blue, green, yellow and the red and white ofthe GR®48. Stick to the red markings, which are moderately dense but present at important points. There are also occasional signposts from the Departmental Tourism Committee with a drawing of a footprint.

(S/E) Head north towards the centre of the village, walk along a boules court and look for a signpost with information about walks. At the corner of the town hall, turn left into Rue de l'Église and go around the church on the left.

(1) Pass the church entrance and, at the crossroads, continue straight ahead along Rue de la Forêt, towards "Le Château". At the next fork, take the left road towards Bois de Juche-Pie (signposted; ignore thePR® variant on the right). Note the old castle at the top on the right. At the next intersection, turn right towards "Le Moulin". At the fork at the foot of the old castle, turn right and go uphill.

(2) At a T-junction (vineyards), turn left. At the first fork, turn right and then left at the second fork. After a house, the small road gives way to a path that heads towards the forest. Ignore a path on the right and enter the woods. At a fork, turn right and descend towards a meadow. Cross between the meadow and the field, turn right and walk along the edge of the forest on your left. Ignore the first path that branches off to the left.

(3) After passing a ruined house, turn left at an acute angle and pass over the ruined house. Go up into the forest and note some old caves dug into the rock on the right. Ignore a path on the right and cross an area where trees have recently been cut down. At a fork, take the left path towards a house.

(4) Take a small road on the left, leave the buildings on your right, pass between two ponds and follow a path northwards along the edge of the forest on your left. Stay on this wide path, ignoring the turnings on either side, and pass a clay pigeon shooting range. Shortly before the road enters the woods further north, turn right at a right angle between two horse pastures, ignoring a red and white chain intended for motor vehicles. Pass a house and you will come to a crossroads.

(5) Continue along the path opposite (east-southeast). Go down into the woods and, when you reach a small ruined house, turn left. Leave the woods, keep left and you will come to a spring on your right surrounded by masonry (traces of an old wash house?).

(6) Continue south on a path that climbs slightly, pass a small house on the right and ignore a path branching off to the right. Come out next to some vineyards on your left. Continue south-south-east and, at a fork, continue in the same direction downhill, ignoring the sign for "Avon-les-roches" on your left. Come out onto a small road which you follow to the right to climb towards the village of Etilly.

(7) Just after a wooden house on the left and before a shed on the right, turn left onto a small road. At a T-junction, turn left and descend slightly. After following a wall on your right, at an intersection, take the small road on the left. Further on, at the "Cédez le passage" sign, continue straight ahead on a gravel road between the vineyards (the purple line on the IGN map suggests turning left at elevation 49, but on the ground, the marked road continues south).

(8) At the next crossroads, turn right onto a small road (ignore the alternative route opposite). Note the old hexagonal dovecote on the left, known as "La Fuye ou Fuie de Roncé". At the "Stop" sign, turn right and continue to Roncé (information sign). Continue westwards, following the wall of a property.

(9) Just after the wall, turn left: the small road gives way to a path. Pass a pond on the right and another on the left. The path then turns right towards some houses, which you go around on the right. Then turn left onto a small road and cross a stream.

(10) Just after the small bridge, turn right and walk along with a vineyard on your left and a hedge on your right. Pass a private lake on your right. At the small road, turn right. Cross the stream again, enter Panzoult and you will immediately find yourself back at the starting point (S/E).

Notes

Good walking shoes are sufficient for this hike. There are no water sources along the way: bring plenty of water with you.

The first part of the hike, up to (6), is mostly in the woods. The second part is in open terrain: depending on the season, bring sunscreen. This hike should be very pleasant in autumn, after the grape harvest (not tested).

Hike completed by the author on 10 August 2015.

A pleasant hike, with a very wooded first section. The signposts are easy to follow. A GPS device is not essential. However, the end is a bit tedious, with uninteresting vineyards and, above all, too much road.

A beautiful hike through woods and vineyards with lovely panoramic views. No particular difficulties, well signposted.
Well shaded section in the woods. However, if it is very hot, take care in the vineyards

A beautiful hike between vineyards and forest, but with some elevation gain.
There are areas with beautiful views and properties, and be sure to take the short detour to visit the Roncé dovecote.

A beautiful route through vineyards and forests, with a magnificent dovecote in Ronce, which I went inside to discover a very beautiful interior. I use GPS to map out the route.

A beautiful route through vineyards and forests. Given the time of year, we didn't meet anyone along the way. There are a few stretches of road, but there was very little traffic, so it wasn't a problem.
We found the signposting to be good, but we used our GPS a lot.

A beautiful route through vineyards and woods.
The route is varied and has a few hills, which is very rare in Touraine!
The signposting is very good.
A hike to be repeated in the other three seasons to enjoy the variety of landscapes!

We took the path from the rocks, so we ended up doing it backwards. We got a little lost, but we had a great time. We were looking for woods and we found them, and we got some great views. Well, we didn't do the whole 10 km because we got big blisters

it was a shame because it is varied and very pleasant, with no difficulties.
finally, we had the pleasure of tasting wine at a vineyard in Panzoult.

Very pleasant for the first three quarters of the route, a little too much tarmac towards the end, but a lovely walk overall with no particular difficulties and plenty of time to linger.

Walk taken on a beautiful October morning.
Perfect description and very clear red markings. Easy route.
Very beautiful church in Panzoult. The route alternates pleasantly between wooded sections and crossings of the Chinon countryside through vineyards. A few small ponds. Nice rest area and picnic spot at the southern exit of Panzoult. As a bonus this season, we were able to pick up some nice walnuts and a few bunches of sweet grapes left behind by the grape harvesters.
