Description of the walk

Start from the small car park at Saint-Nicolas Church, in the village of Tavant. Access via the D760, which links L'île-Bouchard and Anché.

(S/E) With your back to the D760, with the church on your left and the old station on your right, head up Rue du Porteau opposite. At the fork that appears after about a hundred metres, take a narrow tarmac road on the left. Climb slightly then continue on a gentle uphill slope.

(1) Ignore the farm track branching off to the right and continue for about 250m along the small road. When this turns left, carry straight on along a tarmac path with a grassy strip down the middle.

(2) At the end of the tarmac, continue straight ahead onto a wide grassy track and pass under a power line. At the end of the track, follow a small road to the left.

(3) At the T-junction, follow the D113 to the left (be careful, narrow verge). After a clump of bushes on the left, turn left towards Gros Bois. After about 150m, you will reach the dolmen known as Palet de Gargantua.

(4) Retrace your steps, then follow the D113 to the left again.

(5) At the crossroads, turn left onto the D302 towards Tavant. Ignore a turning off to the left and continue along the wall of the Château de Haut Brizay park on your right.

(6) At the next junction, turn sharply left onto a path running parallel to a power line on the left-hand side.

(7) At the bottom of a short descent and just before a farm, turn right onto a wide path that follows the hollow of a small valley. After about 400m, the path is bordered on the right by a hedge containing beautiful walnut trees.

(8) At the end of the hedge, note the bell tower of Tavant church on the left and continue slightly downhill between the fields.

(9) At the T-junction, follow the road to the left. When it bends to the right, leave it and take a gravel path (dead end) to the left, which is none other than the embankment of the old railway line. Follow this path to the church (S/E).

Notes

This route follows tarmac roads or well-maintained paths: good trainers or low-cut walking boots are sufficient for this hike.

No water sources are marked on the route. In summer, ensure you have suitable sun protection.

The route is not signposted at all; a detailed map is essential (at the very least the one accompanying this description).

Worth a visit

The Church of Saint-Nicolas (12th century), in Tavant (S/E), is well worth a visit in its own right! A very beautiful Romanesque church (12th century), simple in appearance from the outside, which houses stunning 11th-century frescoes in its crypt.

Church opening days: November to March, Monday to Friday; April to August, Tuesday to Saturday. Annual closure from 22 December to 2 January.
Opening hours (all year round): 10.00–12.30 and 14.15–18.00.
To visit the crypt, ask for the keys at the town hall (located to the west of the village).

Le Palet de Gargantua (4), a small, well-preserved dolmen, is the second stop on this walk. The dolmen is situated at the edge of a field: when crops have been sown, do not enter the field, even if the vegetation is still at the seedling stage. Depending on the crop grown, the dolmen is more or less visible in spring and summer.

A short, gentle and easy walk. Part of the route is on tarmac, but the road isn’t very busy, so even though it’s not the most interesting part, it’s still a pleasant walk.

Given the time of year, we didn’t see a soul along the way.
It’s walnut season and there are plenty of them on the path and the road
There are plenty of fields, but the harvest is over and it’s ploughing season, which is why this route is less appealing.

The best part is visiting this extraordinary little Romanesque church with an outstanding guide! But the walk amidst the singing isn’t particularly picturesque...

A very pleasant walk, apart from the stretch along the D 113 (about a kilometre long, but the only way to see the stone), which, although not particularly busy, has a very narrow hard shoulder.

Thank you for this walking route. I was able to see Gargantua’s disc, as the vegetation is low at this time of year. Lovely scenery and beautiful farmhouses.
