The Carroi Bon Air Dolmen and Sassay Castle

On the southern edge of the Chinon vineyards, the route alternates between fields, woods and pretty hamlets. The church at Ligré, a well-preserved Neolithic dolmen and a Renaissance castle add superb heritage highlights to this walk.

Description of the walk

Start from the centre of Ligré. Park in the town hall car park, which is located behind the building and is accessible from Rue de la Morlière, at the entrance to the village when arriving via the small road from the hamlet of La Morlière.

(S/E) On leaving the car park, turn right, cross Rue Saint-Martin (D426) and head up Rue du Dolmen.

(1) At the next junction, continue straight on towards the dolmen. After about 200m, turn right onto the wide grassy path which, in the middle of a field, leads to the dolmen.

(2) Retrace your steps, return to the road and follow it to the right for about 300m.

(3) Then take a field path on the left which starts at the foot of an electricity pole. Go straight on and ignore a path branching off to the left.

(4) At the end, turn left towards some houses. At thefirst house, the track gives way to tarmac. You’ll come out onto a street; follow it to the right.

(5) At the stop sign, turn right into Rue du Grand Rouilly. Just after the sign marking the entrance to Le Rouilly (on the left-hand side), take a wide path on the left between the fields.

(6) At the end, take thesecond path on the right (north-west) and follow the edge of a wood on your left. Ignore a path leading left into the wood and briefly return to the tarmac.

(7) Cross the D115 and continue along the path opposite. Enter a wood and immediately ignore a faint track on the right. At the fork shortly afterwards, turn right. Head down into the wood on a good path and ignore faint tracks on the right.

(8) At the T-junction, turn right. Cross the hamlet of Les Ormeaux and, at the end of the street, first turn left then right to follow the wall of a property on your right. At the corner of the wall, turn right and you will reach the main gate of Sassay Castle.

(9) Retrace your steps and cross the hamlet of Les Ormeaux again.

(8) At the junction you passed on the way out, continue straight ahead. Walk alongside the woodland on your left, note a patch of vines on the right and ignore a path branching off to the left. At the corner of the woodland, continue straight ahead (south-west) between the fields for about 500m.

(10) Atthe first junction, turn left. At the next junction (elevation 91), turn left again and head towards the woods. Just before reaching them, take a grassy path on the right towards some houses. Cross the hamlet of Le Quellay.

(11) At the junction, cross the D115 and follow the C11 opposite towards Ligré. Pass through the hamlet of La Chênaie du Quellay. At the crossroads, continue along the main road which turns sharply left.

(12) At the junction, turn right onto a small gravel road towards La Huberdellière. After about 150m, you’ll find a shaded spot on the left ideal for a break, and nearby a series of ponds (surroundings somewhat neglected, as of July 2018). Retrace your steps.

(12) Back at the junction, follow the road to the right. At a fork, turn left towards Le Rouilly.

(5) At the Stop sign, continue straight on along Rue de Rouilly. Ignore the lane on the left that you took on the way out. At a fork, continue straight on and ignore the lane on the right. At the Stop sign, continue straight on.

(1) At the next stop sign, turn right downhill. Cross Rue Saint-Martin and you will find the town hall car park on your left (S/E).

Notes

Good trainers or low-cut walking boots are sufficient for this route, which follows quiet minor roads and well-maintained paths.

No water points identified along the route. No shops in Ligré.

A detailed map is required (at the very least the one accompanying this description).

Alternative route:
6 If you wish to reduce the proportion of tarmac sections, at point (12) on the return from the Fontaine de l’Orgenne, go straight on along the field path (take it on the left if you have not done the return leg). Ignore a path branching off to the left at the edge of the woods and you will immediately reach the crossroads ( ). Take the first path on the right and, at the end, follow the road to the junction (5). Then follow the main route again.

Hike completed by the author on 30 July 2018.

Hello,
A pleasant walk, starting with a visit to the dolmen before heading off to enjoy the beautiful countryside (fields, woods, vineyards and Sassay Castle).
One slight downside: the Orgenne fountain is dry, which is a shame.
Magnificent view of the church from the town hall square

Apart from the dolmen, the route is monotonous and there is too much road

Hello, too many tarmac sections for my liking.
But otherwise, it’s a lovely walk.
