The Chaugey Well in Chaignay

A circular route around the village of Chaignay, taking in the magnificent ‘Puits de Chaugey’ washhouse (19th century). Also on this route is the Médepain Fountain with its copse, which serves as a bird sanctuary (Bird Protection League). The paths through the woods and the Laverottes forest are also very pleasant.

Description of the walk

Park on Rue du Puits Chirot next to number 31 in the walkers’ car park.

(S/E) Turn left as you leave the car park, then left again towards Gemeaux via the D105. Then turn left at the wayside cross, towards the Médepain Fountain (signposted as ‘Mettepain’). The path becomes a gravel track; turn right onto the farm track, then left at the end. At the end, turn right to make a round trip to the Fontaine de Médepain.

(1) Set off from the fountain straight ahead, then take the gravel track on the right. When you reach the tarmac road, follow it uphill to the left.

(2) At the cemetery, turn right onto the tarmac road (D6c), then, halfway up the slope, veer right onto the stony track.

(3) At the edge of the woodland, stay on this path as it descends; at the bottom, turn left and follow this path straight on until you reach the road. Turn right and head uphill along the road; immediately after the road sign indicating the bend, turn left.

(4) Continue straight on along this path, which narrows and becomes overgrown. When you reach the fairly wide forest track, turn left and then right just before the bend in the track. Keep left at the first fork and continue straight on until you reach the road. Follow it to the left and then turn right onto a stony track.

(5) Please note: the gate is not accurately marked on the map. Do not go through the gate (contrary to the map), but when you reach the woodland, turn left and walk alongside it, keeping the low wall on your right. Then follow this path as it enters the woodland and gradually descends to the end.

(6) On leaving the woodland, turn left onto the partially tarmac-surfaced track for about 1,100 metres, then turn right onto a stony track and then left to join the D105.

(7) Once you reach the road, turn right towards the Puits de Chaugey.

(8) Retrace your steps and take the gravel track on the right, following it until you reach the road.

(9) Turn left onto it towards the village. Head straight into the village, then turn right towards the car park on Rue du Puits Chirot (S/E).

Check the IGN map carefully for the barrier (5), but also because several farm tracks have been altered.

A perfect mid-season walk thanks to the open terrain; two main points of interest at 1 and 8, and a pleasant route through the woodland between 5 and 6. The route description is very precise – a lovely walk, well done.

A lovely walk with a well-planned route: I really enjoyed the Combe du Bois de Roche – you feel far away from it all, and yet …
There’s an impressive number of birds in this valley, as it happens…
Great work by the LPO around the Médepain fountain (planting hedges all around it)
We finish on a high note with this exceptional wash house!
