Description of the walk

Park at the end of the road at the old Puigmal station.

(S/E) From the car park, head south on the road (only open to cyclists) until you reach a hairpin bend to the right.

(1) Leave the road and take the path that climbs up opposite. Climb gradually before crossing the River Err and reaching a junction of paths.

(2) Ignore the route leading to Petit Segre on the left and take the one on the right. After about 100 metres, the going gets tough. There is a series of steep climbs, covering approximately 1 km and 400 m of elevation gain, so be careful of the gradient! Set off early in the morning to avoid the heat of the sun during this climb and to increase your chances of seeing chamois. You will reach a trail junction.

(3) Continue climbing to the left, where the steep slopes continue for 700 metres with a little less than 300 metres of elevation gain, but just before the summit, the climbs become gentler. Reach the summit cross of Puigmal d'Err and its exceptional panorama.

(4) Take the same route back to the car park at the Puigmal station (S/E).

I deliberately avoided the steep 15% climb from point 2 to point 4, preferring to go to Puigmal Petit de Segre and reach point 4 via the ridges, which is a very pleasant route but less steep. However, I did descend via points 3 and 2 as indicated.
