Description of the walk

Park in the car park on the N116 at the entrance to Saillagouse

Red and White signs for theGR®36

(S/E) From the car park, head west and turn right onto Place Sainte-Eugénie (named after the church). Then turn right onto Rue du Mas Saint-Antoine. At the end of the street, turn left onto Chemin de Montlouis, which leads you onto the N116.

(1) Take extreme care when using this busy road.
You will reach a junction with a footpath, with Rue du Mas Rondole on your right.

(2) Take the signposted path on the left. This leads you to Route du Mas Rondole, which you should take to the left. Cross a stream and you will reach Mas Rondole.

(3) Continue along the signposted path. Cross the railway line and stay on the signposted route, ignoring the side paths, until you reach the D33d road.

(4) Take it on the left, then leave it at the bend by taking the signposted path on the left.
Please note: on this short stretch, there is a steep descent before you reach the D33.

(5) Turn right onto this road, then leave it to the left a few hundred metres further on. Cross the Segre (a tributary of the Ebro) using the footbridge and head towards Mas Sant Josep. Turn left to reach the stop sign on the Route de Llivia.

(6) Follow this road to the left until you reach a junction.

(7) Leave the road and take the track on the right. Continue to the left for a few dozen metres and start a long straight stretch that leads you to the N116 road.

(8) Once again, take extreme care when crossing this busy road.
Take the small climb ahead of you and the track that continues from there. You will cross the railway line just before entering Err.
Stay on the Cami de Llivia and when you reach the D33b road (Carrer Major), turn left onto it.
Further on, turn right onto the Voie Communale Col de Forques, which becomes Place del Cadi a few metres further on, and join the dualGR®36/GRP® Tour de Cerdagne signposting at the junction with the Cami de Vedrignans.

Red and whiteGR®36markings shared with the red and yellowGRP® Tour de Cerdagne markings

(9) Turn left onto theGR®36, shared with theGRP®, which leads you to Vedrignans (the hamlet of Saillagouse, which was the seat of a small seigneury until the French Revolution). Head towards the Sainte-Eugénie Chapel.

(10) Leave theGR® andGRP® markings behind by taking the path on the left which descends towards Saillagouse. You will cross the road (Chemin de Vedrignans) by heading straight ahead, before rejoining it a few dozen metres further on by following it to the left.

(11) Cross the River Segre and take Rue des Bergers straight ahead, then take the second left onto Rue Carrer del Mitg, which leads to the N116 road; turn right onto this road to finish your walk (S/E).

A really lovely walk thanks to its trails and paths winding from farm to farm around Saillagouse, with plenty of water sources all along the route, despite the scorching August heat. The stretch through Llivia was tough: 2 km in the blazing sun with a headwind of 60 km/h, and apart from the dust, we didn’t see much of the Spanish enclave. However, right at the end, just before Err, we had a picnic under the apple trees in a (private) orchard and a group of deer put on a show for us. All in all, a lovely walk!

A pleasant walk offering a chance to explore Saillagouse and its surrounding farms and villages.
The long, straight stretch in full sun across the fields to Llivia was rather uninteresting.

Thank you for this lovely walk! I’d recommend it as a warm-up when you first arrive in the area!
A few details regarding the route and description: this needs to be amended in two places (already pointed out by Christi19) as the signposting has changed and one path is no longer accessible.

  • At point (1), you must carefully cross the N116 to take the road opposite, which, contrary to the IGN map, leads onto Rue du Carlit. Then turn left onto Rue du Mas Rondole to carefully cross the N116 again and arrive at point (2).
  • At point (4), leave the road (as the path on the left in the bend mentioned in the description is no longer accessible) and take the path (not shown on the IGN map) descending to the right of the road towards Mas St Joseph. You will rejoin the road, which you must cross to continue straight ahead along a grassy path (which is wet at the start!) following the yellow markings (path not shown on the IGN map). It descends through Camp Gros then turns left towards Arbolosa before branching off to the right and joining the D33, near a road junction. Carefully follow the road to the left (yellow markings, still heading towards Mas St Joseph), then after a left-hand bend, head down to the right onto the path leading to the Sègre as described.

I had planned to do a similar route, starting from Saillagouse and passing through Err, but as I was worried about the weather turning rainy, I opted for a different route on the opposite side of the valley; if there is a risk of rain over Saillagouse but not on the Font-Romeu side, you can therefore opt for a route leading from Bolquère to Odeillo (see http://sogeco31.blogspot.com/2020/09/de-...)

A lovely walk, not difficult at all. Stunning views practically all the way along the route. Thanks for the suggestion!
We did have a bit of trouble following the route description, though – luckily we had the app and GPS on our phone:
It seems that the suggested route doesn’t always follow the yellow markings, contrary to what’s indicated.
At point 1, the markings suggest turning right after crossing the road. Apparently, it then returns to the Mas Rondole road, thus avoiding the fairly busy N116.
At point 4, the markings and a sign pointing to “Mas St. Joseph” suggest taking a path to the left, rather than the road. We followed the route along the road but had difficulty finding the path at point 5 that branches off to the left. We crossed what is essentially a pasture to find the markings and signposting again on the road below. It would apparently have been easier to follow the signposting rather than the Visorando route. After that, there weren’t too many problems. Be careful: at 10, the signposting appears quite late, but opposite the church there is a sign indicating the way to Saillagouse.
