The Pont Plat

This family hike is historically very interesting.
Between the shaded first part and the canal-side second part, the route has a total elevation gain of 28 metres, mainly at the beginning.
In terms of history, from Henri IV to Charles de Freycinet, the size of boats has increased, imposing new standards. Today, we talk about the amount of water consumed that needs to be saved.

Description of the walk

Marked route No. 70.
Start from the lock car park, Rue Hugues Cosnier.

(S/E) With your back to the car park, turn right and cross the bridge over the canal. At the end of the bridge, take the path that leads down to the foot of the locks, with the canal on your left. When you reach the foot of the locks, in front of the chestnut tree, turn right and follow the paved path that runs alongside the old locks, which will now be on your right.

(1) Continue walking with the Old Canal (also known as Rigole de l'Étang Neuf) on your right. Enter the undergrowth and continue.

(2) Stop for a moment to read about and understand an old unit of measurement: the myriamètre. Continue along this path, keeping the Old Canal on your right, and cross the Pont Plat bridge (see Practical Information). Further on, you will need to turn right and then left to avoid entering a private road.

(3) Go straight ahead without crossing the bridge on the right. Continue, keeping the silos in sight. In front of the Briare Canal, turn right and pass under the D14 bridge. Continue along the towpath.

(4) Continue along the towpath with the canal on your left. Pass the Javacière lock, the Racault lock without crossing the canal, the Saint-Joseph lock and then the Chante-Pinot lock.

(5) When you reach the crossroads, turn left and cross the bridge. Carefully cross the D314 to reach the car park (S/E).

Worth a visit

Rogny-les-Sept-Écluses is listed as one of the "Cités de caractères de Bourgogne - Franche-Comté" (villages of character in Burgundy-Franche-Comté).
Hugues Cosnier, an engineer from Tours, built this canal crossing a watershed. Work began in 1605 and was completed in 1642 after his death in 1632.
Between 6,000 and 12,000 workers were employed on this project, which connects the Loire and Seine river basins.
The old locks were abandoned in the 1880s, as their dimensions no longer allowed the passage of boats with a larger draught. The route of the new canal was modified as a result.

A very pleasant walk in the late afternoon when it's very hot. Flat path, well shaded on the first section. The only tricky part is the passage under the bridge: tall grass and brambles for about 100 metres. Follow the tracks, but the path could do with being cleared over a wider area. You can avoid this section by crossing the bridge to join the towpath.

Nice, easy route, but there is one major drawback when passing under the D14 road (at silo/canal level): the path is not maintained and needs to be cleared with a brush cutter... a shame.

Nice walk. Well signposted up to Etang Neuf, then the signs disappear.
It's best to download the map so you can access it offline on your smartphone.
The banks of the Briare Canal are not mowed, so it's best to take a stick to ward off the grass snakes, which can be seen swimming in the canal.
Thank you for this walk!

A very pleasant walk with varied landscapes, starting in the undergrowth and then following the canal and its seven locks to Rogny...
Opposite the magnificent Seven Locks, there are explanations about its design and history, which are very interesting!
The route is easy and well signposted, promising a pleasant time!

An easy and interesting walk in a peaceful rural setting. The sign in the car park at the start of the walk refers to it as "Le Canal" and there are two arrows bearing this name. In any case, the route is fairly obvious.

The woodland trail must be pleasant in summer,
a short, easy circular.

The walk through the woods is a bit long.
It's a shame there aren't any benches along this route for a picnic.

Half of the route is through woodland and half is along the canal – a pleasant route in the sunshine.
