Description of the walk

Park near Saint-Martin’s Church in Mézières-en-Drouais.

(S/E) Head east and follow the Grand Rue, keeping the church on your right. Pass the Impasse du Calvaire on your right, then turn immediately right onto Rue des Étangs (D116). Stay on the D116 for about 150 m.

(1) Continue along the D116 and pass through the gate leading to the water sports centre.

(2) Turn left when you reach the buildings and start walking round the lake in a clockwise direction. A little further on, pass a car park on your left and you’ll soon come to a junction.

(3) Turn right here. Cross a footbridge and continue along the lake.

(4) At the southern tip of the lake, turn right, follow the road for about 150 m, then turn right again at the water’s edge. Stay as close to the lake as possible until you return to the water sports centre.

(2) Go through the gate again to leave the water sports centre and follow the D116 to the left for about 150 m.

(1) Follow the path on the right as it climbs up the hillside. At the top of the hill, carry on straight ahead (south-east; view of the lake and the valley). Enter the woods.

(5) Take thefirst path on the left and head deeper into the woods. Follow this winding path. Leave the woods and turn immediately right to stay on the edge of the woodland.

(6) Cross the D308 and take the path opposite. At thefirst junction, turn right. Continue straight on between the fields, skirting a few copses.

(7) At the junction on the edge of a woodland, turn right. The path runs alongside the woodland and then some orchards, before joining the D308.

(8) Follow the road to the right. At the end, first turn right then left to follow a path leading to the cemetery. Go round the cemetery on the left and follow Rue des Bouviers.

(9) Cross the Route des Étangs, leaving the church on your left. At the next junction, turn right and cross two branches of the River Eure in succession.

(10) Take thefirst right, Rue Saint-Hilaire, which immediately turns left. At the next bend, carry on straight ahead along a path. You’ll come out onto a street; follow it to the right. At the next junction, turn left into Rue de la Forgerie. Pass two streets on your right and you’ll come out onto the D929.

(11) Cross the road at the pedestrian crossing and follow it to the right, then immediately take thefirst left. Atthe first junction, go straight on.

(12) Take thefirst path on the right, which winds its way up the wooded plateau. At the top, at a junction, turn left and stay on the edge of the woods.

(13) At the next junction, turn right. Continue along the edge of the woods.

(14) At the next junction, turn right and head downhill. Take thefirst track on the left and pass in front of a reservoir. You’ll come out onto a road; follow it to the right (view of the valley and the lake).

(15) When you reach a cemetery on the right-hand side and just before a left-hand bend, take a path on the left. Continue straight ahead along this path, which runs along the embankment of an old railway line. At the junction, turn right and head downhill to the D929.

(16) Cross the road, follow a smaller road for a few metres and immediately take a stony track on the right which descends towards the river. At the bottom, turn left. The track passes close to the ruins of the old village of Luray.

(17) You’ll come out onto the D152b; follow it to the right, cross the River Eure and pass the old Mézières Mill. Continue straight on until you reach the church (S/E).

Very good to do regardless of the season, and attendance is high regardless of the season as well.

A walk taken on a rather cloudy but very windy day, particularly around the lake.
We visited the church in Mézières before setting off on the route.
Good paths, few climbs and varied scenery.
A few walkers and joggers around the lake but no one else on the rest of the route.
To extend the route (a little too much) from point 11, we turned left at the first junction onto the GRP path to Villemeux-sur-Eure (church and wash house with picnic tables) and returned via the other side of the valley.
The bridge over the Eure is currently closed for works until December 2023. Even pedestrians cannot cross. You therefore need to walk along the lake to the water sports centre and reach the church via the D116.
There is a bakery opposite the church.

A lovely route with plenty of variety (water’s edge, forest tracks, paths through farmland, passing through charming little villages) and not too much tarmac
It’s best to avoid this walk on very hot days as the route is very exposed from point 11 onwards
Thanks to the author for this lovely discovery
