The La Roche Ballue stretch of water starting from Basse-Indre

Enjoy a short crossing of the Loire by ferry to reach, partly through the woods, the site of La Roche Ballue, a former quarry converted into a leisure centre.
Please note that free access to the leisure centre is only available outside the summer season, from September to mid-June.

Description of the walk

Park in the Basse Indre car park at 1 Quai Besnard.

(S/E) Cross the Loire by ferry; the crossing is free. On the left bank, head right to reach a path junction behind the Arsenal d’Indret.

(1) Turn left, cross a small stream and turn left immediately afterwards. Climb a short, steep slope. At the top of the slope, continue on to reach the edge of the woods, where a manor house stands.

(2) Walk through the woods to the village of La Roche Ballue, then continue until you reach a forest path at the edge of the village.

(3) Turn left, cross the tiny wooden bridge over a stream. Continue along this path to reach the crossroads at the Leisure Centre.

(4) Carry on and begin the walk around the lake. You will reach the climbing site opposite.

(5) Complete the loop to return to the previous junction.

(4) Turn left and take the fairly steep staircase to reach the top of the site directly. Enjoy the magnificent view of the Loire here. Head through the woods to the junction by the wooden bridge.

(3) Follow the route from the outward journey, then turn left for a detour to the Château d’Aux on leaving Roche Ballue. Then return to the crossroads by the Manoir.

(2) Follow the route from the outward journey from here, with the option of turning right onto Rue de la Vallée. Then rejoin the route from the outward journey. Follow this back to the ferry and then to the Basse Indre car park (S/E).

Remember to wear waterproof walking boots as some areas can get muddy.

Please note: During spring tides, the ferry service is sometimes suspended. Remember to check the suspension times so you don’t get stuck on your return journey; see here for details.

Worth a visit

(1) Indret Arsenal: This is a former foundry established in 1777 and now occupied by the Naval Group’s propulsion unit.

Between (4) and (3), at the top of the site, look out to the right in the distance for the Cheviré Bridge, over which the Nantes ring road passes.

Signage is needed as the mix of routes is confusing.
Beautiful views of the Loire.

A lovely walk, very natural, peaceful and quiet, with few people about, and La Montagne is a very traditional village. The view from the top of the lake is lovely. You do need to wear sturdy footwear – it’s muddy despite the warm weather, and steep and rocky in places. However, for the return journey, instead of retracing your steps, I recommend an alternative route. At point 3, on the little bridge, turn right to reach the ferry. You walk past a lovely village, continuing straight on towards a dead end (marked in yellow), then take a path. On the right, a bridge leads to a superb wooden walkway through the marshes, La Chaussée de Robert. You come straight to the ferry – a shorter route and, quite frankly, superb.

A lovely route with very pleasant paths, a beautiful avenue at the start lined with magnificent plane trees on either side, the picturesque village of La Roche-Ballue, the magnificent setting, and observation points from which you can spot birds on the Loire.
