From the Basse Indre ferry to the Pont Pierre quarry

A lovely walk that starts by following the banks of the Loire, passing through the Tougas hills, then through the Tougas Marshes, before reaching the lake in the former Pont Pierre quarry.

Description of the walk

Start from the Basse Indre car park along Quai Besnard.

(S/E) Head towards the Loire, then turn left upstream along the Loire and follow Quai Henri Brunais to the right for 400 m.

(1) At the bend, turn right towards the footbridge. Turn left, then, a little further on, right to reach the roundabout; go round it on the left to join Rue Danielle Mitterand.

(2) Veer slightly to the left below the road, then head north. Go through the tunnel under the road and follow the path to your right, then to your left for about twenty metres. Walk straight up the small Colline de Tougas.

(3) You are now at the highest point of the hill, with a field of solar panels on your right. Walk down the hill towards the north, following the zigzagging path. At the bottom of the descent, turn right and walk alongside the railway line for 700 m.

(4) Turn left through the railway tunnel to cross the Marais de Tougas. After 500 m, head to the right, then turn right onto the Chemin de la Pélousière. Continue straight on until you reach the lake at the Pont Pierre quarry.

(5) Head right to walk round the lake anti-clockwise. Walk past the “La Carrière” theatre. From the theatre, continue straight on northwards for 290 m, then turn left towards the lake’s viewpoint.

(6) Retrace your steps, then turn left onto the small path, and turn right to take the path that leads down to Boulevard Charles de Gaulle.

(7) Go through the tunnel that runs underneath it and, at the junction of the paths, carry on straight ahead towards the north. Ignore the paths on the left and follow the same path, which curves slightly to the left towards a housing estate.

(8) Go round the estate on the left until you reach the roundabout on Boulevard Charles de Gaulle.

(9) At the roundabout, head left onto Rue du Rocher and, almost immediately, turn left onto the path leading to Rue Eugénie Cotton; follow this to the right, then continue straight ahead on the path in front of you, which rejoins the end of Rue Eugénie Cotton.

(10) Take the path on your left and turn right. At the next junction, turn right, then left. Continue along the path overlooking the lake until you reach the fork from the outward journey.

(5) Retrace your steps along the outward route until you reach the railway line.

(4) As you emerge from the railway tunnel, turn right onto the path that skirts Tougas Hill on the right; go through the tunnel on the right to reach point 2.

(2) Turn right, then continue straight on along a footpath heading south. At the end, turn right, cross Avenue de la Loire straight ahead, then turn left onto Rue Elsa Triolet, then turn right towards Rue du Pont Allard. Follow this street to the right for 20 metres.

(11) Turn left onto Rue du Calvaire, which climbs steeply and then bends to the right.

(12) Turn left onto Rue du Bord, then turn right onto Quai Besnard, where you’ll find the car park 200 m ahead (S/E).

A lovely walk. A charming little valley. A striking contrast between the town and the countryside

A superb walk that takes you through the Tougas marshes, along the Chemin de la Pelousière, through the Parc de la Haradière, and of course past the quarry too – it’s a great way to switch off. It offers a variety of landscapes, and what’s more, you can start this walk from several different points. It’s relatively flat, not at all difficult – a real pleasure. As for the signposting provided by the town of Saint-Herblain, it’s a combination of the Pelousière and Hermeland routes. So it’s relatively easy to follow. There are just two places where the signs have faded or are hard to see.

Hello, when I say that the route wasn’t very busy, I’m referring to the day I did it – which doesn’t mean it isn’t worth doing; quite the opposite, in fact. Thank you for this route and all the others I’ve been able to enjoy.
Of all the routes I’ve done, they all live up to the descriptions provided. Thank you again for this and all the other routes.
