From Saint-Paul-de-Fenouillet, take (by car) the Route des Gorges de Galamus for 3.5 km.
The walk starts from a car park on the left, before the other car park at L’Ermitage. The car park is quite large and designed to accommodate coaches.
(S/E) From this car park, at an altitude of around 381 m, head down the D7 road for 100 m due east.
(1) There are two options at this point:
- either follow the road (D7) along theGR®®36, marked with red and white signs, and at the next right-hand bend in the road, turn left onto the track, following theGR®®36, until you reach a fork 300 m further on.
- At a metal barrier on the left, a sign on the right-hand post indicates ‘towards theGR®® ’. Take the track on the left, which climbs slightly for 250 m. Continue along the track on the right for about 100 m.
(2) Don’t miss the cairn and the signpost on the right. Descend along a steep path and rejoin theGR®®36.
(3) Turn left onto a track. Follow theGR®®36and its red and white markings, which take precedence over theGRP®®. Cross the often-drydel Four stream (340 m). Continue climbing along this fairly steep path (north-east then east). You’ll reach the Col de Corbasse (419 m), which youdo not cross__.
(4) Turn left (west then north-west). Continue climbing along the switchbacks.
(5) At 495 m, the path crosses the del Four stream once more. At an altitude of 520 m, the path climbs eastwards.
(6) At around 630 m, the path emerges into a large clearing. You reach the Pla de Brézou (around 660 m).
(7) Turn right. Continue towards Peyrepertuse Castle. The path descends south-east towards the Col de Lapres (601 m). It crosses two streams, which are often dry. Caution: steep, muddy and stony slope. The path then turns north.
(8) Before the Col de Lapres, there is a drinking trough on the right-hand side at the fork. Leave the red and white markings ofthe GR®®36.
Turn sharply left, heading due south-west. Orange horse-riding markings. Follow a track towards Cubiéres. This track then turns due west, above the valley floor. Follow it for approximately 2.8 km.
(9) Carry on straight ahead, ignoring the track that descends and branches off to the right towards the valley floor.
(10) Caution: at the 653-metre mark, at a hairpin bend in the track.
Ignore the track as it descends and heads into the forest (towards Camps-sur-L’Agly)
Continue to the left and follow the well-marked track. A less-used track is also on the left at this point. You’ll reach a clearing (elevation 610).
(11) From this open area, head left towards St Paul and Pic d’Auroux along the track for about 1 km.
(If you carry on straight ahead, 400 m further on to the left, at the fork, the dotted line path on the IGN map is overgrown and impassable).
(12) Before the junction with a track climbing to the left, look for a signpost indicating: Galamus on the right. Leave the track and head into the forest along this well-marked path.
The path is clearly shown on OSM base maps.
Descend 40 m through the forest, heading south-west. After 100 m, pass a junction on the right.
Continue along the hillside through the forest for about 500 m. You’ll reach a crossroads where four paths meet (theGR®®367crosses here, along with two other paths).
If in doubt or in bad weather, continue along the track to rejoin theGR®® 367 further on to the left.
(13) Continue left, ascending along theGR®®367, marked in red and white.
You’ll reach a lovely, flat, open area; continue straight ahead, still on theGR®®, until you reachthe Col Das Souls (at around 685 m).
(14) Ignore the path on the right, which descends steeply to the road.
Carry on along this path through the valley floor. You’ll come to a fork.
(15) Ignore the path on the left which leads back to Pla de Brézou.
Turn right, heading due south. Follow the magnificent stony path as it descends (GRP®® marked in red and yellow). A magnificent view of the Gorges de Galamus opens up before you. Continue downhill. From the altitude of 503 m, the path heads due east. It joins the road and your car at around 381 m (S/E).
