Description of the walk

(S/E) From the Valladas car park, go up Rue de la Poste and join Rue de la Poterne.
Cross the centre of old Châteauneuf and join Rue du Portail. Follow the Sentier Botanique uphill to the statue of the Virgin Mary.

(1) Turn right onto a wide track that runs alongside the ramparts of the old castle. Magnificent view over the whole village. Continue along this track, which is shared withthe GR®, for over a kilometre, then leave it when it turns left and follow a path straight ahead.

(2) At the intersection, turn right onto the path. Follow it, ignoring the paths on the left. Splendid view of the Rhône. On the way back from this circular balcony, keep to the right and rejoin the section taken on the way out.

(2) This time, turn right onto a small grassy path that runs alongside a meadow. Join an old BMX track.

(3) Keep left and rejoin the main path, which further on turns south and runs alongside the Donzère road.

(4) At the end of the path, cross the road and take Chemin de Belle Eau. In the bend in the road, keep left and continue until you reach the gate of the house.

(5) Then turn right onto the stone and dirt path that climbs up the slopes of Navon.
Take the forest track on the left to climb up and, near the top, take the small path that climbs up to the ridge on the left. Splendid view of the Rhône valley and the mountains of Allan and Malataverne. Descend the ridge, continuing in the same direction.

(6) Turn right onto a path under coniferous trees. Join the forest track and follow it to the left. Just before the first house, take the grassy path on the left which joins the Chemin de Rac aux Joannins, then turn left.

(7) At the hairpin bend with Chemin du Navon, you can make a round trip to the hamlet of Rac. Otherwise, turn left onto Chemin du Navon. Stay on this small road for about 2 kilometres.

(8) Turn right onto a small path that descends. This leads to the ruins of Châteauneuf and joins Chemin du Cimetière, which takes you back to the starting point (S/E).

View of the day when we did it, very visible trail, marked all along, some nice viewpoints, shaded for hot weather. Beautiful walk, nothing to say.

A beautiful hike with a stunning view of the Rhône, the trail along the Navon is very pleasant. A detour to Le Rac at point 7 can be added to the route, which takes an extra 10 minutes.

The start is the most difficult part (high, uneven steps in the scent garden). At the end, it is possible to shorten the route a little by going through the south gate of Chateauneuf (where you will discover some beautiful historic buildings).
Magnificent view of the Rhône, Viviers and the Ardèche (point 2). The circular at the end (point 7, Frac hamlet) is interesting, with a beautiful view of Montélimar and the surrounding area. You can walk around the hamlet and come back.

A nice little walk, a quick detour to the old village is a must as it is very beautiful. There was no one there even though it was a public holiday. Very easy route. Be careful at the top of Navon and on the descent, however, as the wire fencing is hidden and stuck in the grass at the edge, and it is easy to trip over it.

A lovely walk, although a little longer than advertised. Quite a few shaded sections, not very busy at this time of year. The view of the Rhône is magnificent.

Quite simply one of the most beautiful hikes in the region. The circular balcony that takes us to the viewpoint over the Rhône is simply exceptional. The rest of the hike is too. Once at Navon, the view is also exceptional.
Best done on a day with good visibility! During the same hike, we were able to see Mont Ventoux and Les 3 Becs, which is quite rare.
The sections through the woods are short and all different (some thicker than others), so you never get bored!

Thank you for this very pleasant hike alternating between woodland and open stretches. Lovely views of the Rhône, Châteauneuf du Rhône and Viviers.
No particular difficulties, but take care when descending from Navon, as the slope is quite steep and rocky.
In terms of data, my GPS recorded a distance of 11.5 km (going to Le Rac) with an elevation gain of 415 m.

A very beautiful, easy hike with lovely views. There is a bit of tarmac towards the end, but the short detour via La Rac is well worth it.
there must be a way to descend directly from Navon to Chateauneuf to avoid the long tarmac section, but that "eliminates" La Rac
