Discover Viviers

Viviers, capital of the Vivarais region in Ardèche, located on the banks of the Rhône, has a beautiful architectural heritage. I suggest a walk to discover the historic centre and the port.

Description of the walk

Park in the car park at the port of Viviers. This walk is not signposted.

(S/E) With your back to the Rhône, follow the Allée du Rhône towards the village centre. You will arrive at the Place de la Roubine, with a fountain.

(1) Walk along the right-hand side of the square. At the T-junction, turn left onto Rue Jean-Baptiste Serre and continue to the crossroads. Turn right onto Rue de l'Hospice. At the T-junction, keep right, then continue straight ahead at the next crossroads. You will arrive at the entrance to the seminary. Enter the courtyard.

(2) Retrace your steps to the intersection with Rue de L'Hospice, but do not turn onto it; instead, continue straight ahead. Pass under a beautiful carved archway and you will arrive in front of the stunning Maison des Chevaliers. Continue to the end of the street, opposite a house with a fresco, the Maison de Lestrade. Pass it on your right and follow Rue du Château. At the end of the street, turn right, then right again onto Rue du Fournas.

At the T-junction, with a house with a turret set back on the right, turn left, then right onto the next street. You will come to the busy and unpleasant D86 road, which unfortunately runs through this village (optional return trip to the right to the foot of the belfry, which is visible from this crossroads).

(3) Cross carefully and, facing the Esplanade, turn left, cross a car park and continue in the same direction along a narrow street (Chemin de Latrau). You will come to a very busy roundabout. Cross it carefully to reach the entrance to the park of the old town hall opposite. Enter to explore the building.

(4) Return to the park entrance, cross the road carefully, leaving the roundabout on your left, and follow the alley straight ahead, passing in front of the diocese. Immediately after, turn right onto Montée de l'Abri. At the intersection, at a small square, take the passage on the right that goes around Saint-Vincent Cathedral on the right.

(5) On the north side of the cathedral, turn right and follow the path that leads to Esplanade Jules II. There is a beautiful view of the village. Retrace your steps to return to the cathedral.

(5) Turn right and go downhill to find the entrance to the building (open when we visited). Turn right opposite the entrance onto a stairway street. At the bottom, you will arrive at Rue du Château. Follow it to the right. Ignore Rue du Fournas on the left at the intersection you passed earlier, continue straight ahead and keep left at the intersections to find the Maison de Lestrade.

Continue to the right and then, in the same direction, onto Grande Rue to find another intersection you passed earlier. Turn right onto Rue de la Roubine. At the intersection, with Place de la Roubine on your left, go straight ahead, pass to the right of Café Français, leave the village and continue straight ahead on the pedestrian/cycle path to the Rhône. At the T-junction, turn left, head towards the port, then the car park (S/E).

Very easy hike, no special equipment required.
It is a great pity that the village is crossed by an extremely busy road frequented by lorries, the D86. Please take care when approaching it.

A very beautiful hike in this lovely village that is well worth discovering, especially if, like us, you are just passing through.
For the more adventurous, and provided you have good closed-toe shoes (such as trainers), we recommend climbing up to the "statue of the Virgin of Joannade".
To do this, when you are on the Latrau road, just before you reach the roundabout, turn right onto the Joannade road on the right. Further up, turn right and follow the winding path. If you do this in the late afternoon, the path is in the shade and you have a magnificent view of Viviers with beautiful lighting. Be careful on the way down as it can be slippery. Additional time: approximately 30 minutes. See attached photo.

A little-known village, yet its medieval charm and magnificent cathedral make it a great place for a pleasant family outing.
