The Navon by the ruins of Belle Eau

A circular route, often through woodland, along paths and small roads, between the villages of Malataverne and Donzère. Walkers will discover the remains of the ponds that adorned the Domaine de Belle Eau in the 19th century. A short climb takes you to the summit of the Navon, where you can admire a superb panorama of the Rhône valley.

Description of the walk

Coming from Les Joannins, from the D844, turn right onto Chemin de Belle Eau. Park behind Château Belle Eau, where there is a lay-by on the right with space for a few cars.

(S/E) From the car park, with your back to the château, take the path on the right, which climbs whilst curving to the right.

(1) Just before a left-hand bend, turn onto a barely visible track to the right, which goes round an old pond with a central fountain, of which only a pile of rocks remains. Return to the original path and continue to the right. On the right, large rocks appear which once marked the edges of another large basin. Enter the enclosure of this basin via a well-marked track on the right, between a rock and a tree. Follow the track, made by other walkers, and reach a curiously shaped bridge built in the same style as the remains of the fountain.

(2) Pass under the bridge and immediately climb up to the left to rejoin the track, which continues and loops back to the starting path in a U-shape. Continue to the right along the path, ignoring the various offshoots to the left and right. At the next fork, keep to the left. Stay on this main path until you reach a junction with a forest track (barrier).

(3) Take the wide path opposite, which soon becomes a small tarmac road known as the “Chemin de la Ferme Carrée”.

(4) Leave the road as it begins to curve to the right, and continue straight ahead along a wide track. Ignore a path branching off to the right. Continue climbing along this track, which curves sharply to the left, and ascend the eastern flank of the Navon.

(5) On the flat section, climb to the right along a gullied path to reach the summit of the Navon: superb views over the Rhône and Viviers.

(6) Turn back to the flat section.

(5) Take the path on the right.

(7) Leave this path at a hairpin bend to the left and continue straight ahead along a track that enters the woods.

(8) At the end, in front of the gate to a private property, turn left onto a small tarmac road. At the next junction, turn left again onto Chemin de Belle Eau and return to the car park where you started (S/E).

Worth a visit

After belonging to Monsignor Sébastien Sibour, Archbishop of Paris, Château Belle Eau was purchased by François Bravay, a wine merchant who had made his fortune in Egypt. Currently, the château and its outbuildings have a new owner, and restoration and enhancement work is underway on the grounds and buildings (including the two gatehouses at the entrance gate visible from the D844). However, the remains of two ponds overgrown with vegetation are still accessible via the footpaths on the hill. The château has remained in the local collective memory for having hosted His Highness Said Pasha, Viceroy of Egypt, on 25 August 1862, in a magnificent setting.

This link will satisfy the most curious by detailing the rather unusual biography of François Bravay (with a reference to Alphonse Daudet’s ‘The Pasha’) and by publishing an illustration of the estate during the Pasha’s reception.

A very enjoyable hike with our 7-year-old daughter. The bridge is very interesting to look at and the view of the fishponds and the Rhône is well worth the detour.
A quick note about the start of the hike: we parked a little before the castle because the indicated car park seems to be private. The trail starts on the left when you have your back to the castle and then turns right.

Hike completed in the morning with beautiful sunshine but mostly in the shade of the woods. The 19th-century rock bridge is very interesting and the return trail to the top of Navon is very rocky and rugged, but the view is worth the effort. Following the route with the app was easy (after checking it on the map beforehand). Thanks for the suggestion!

Actually, there isn’t one. No sign. As the château is currently being renovated for future rentals, perhaps the owner is taking the initiative to ensure his tenants have enough space… that’s just my opinion.
In future, we’ll find another solution if we ever decide to go back there.
Have a good evening

Sorry for the inconvenience, but there are no signs indicating private parking.
For your information, and to avoid any problems in future, there is space to park two or three vehicles a little further down, on a widened section of the road, before reaching Château Belle-Eau.
For larger groups (such as hiking groups), the only option is to drop off the walkers and then use the large car park at the entrance to Les Joannins, behind the wash house, with one or two cars returning to pick up the drivers and parking on the widened section just before the Château.

When we got back from our walk, we found a note on the windscreen telling us not to park in that private car park again!

A lovely little spot by the ponds. It’s a shame the vegetation is taking over. Mostly sheltered from the wind in the woods; a gentle climb, though a bit steeper for a few metres if you head up to Navon, but the view is well worth the minimal effort. A walk with no major difficulties.

Parking available for 8 to 10 vehicles at the starting point
An easy route to follow with very precise details.
Very manageable elevation gain, a bit of a push for the last 50 metres, rewarded by the superb view
at the summit of Navon.
