Park in the Port de Balès car park (food available in season).
(S/E) Go to the signpost: Estive du Mont Né and take the unmarked path that climbs up through the mountain pastures towards Mont du Né, visible opposite you. The path joins the track, which you follow to the last hairpin bend.
(1) At the last bend, leave the track and take the path that climbs steeply and straight up into the mountain pastures towards a small ridge that will lead you to Mont Né. The fork is marked by a few cairns, after which there are no markings. Look for cairns to guide you.
In any case, if the weather is clear, you can easily navigate by sight.
(2) There is a large cairn at the summit and a magnificent view of the central Pyrenees. Continue straight ahead, heading south, and begin the short but steep descent to Port de Pierrefite (altitude 1,857 metres) and its imposing cromlech (there is also a picnic table here).
(3) At the pass, follow theGRP® (yellow and red markings) to the right towards Lac de Bordères (signposted). The path descends gently to the beautiful Lac de Bordères or Lac de Bareilles.
(4) Enjoy the lake and recharge your batteries before continuing along theGRP® trail, which climbs up to the Col du Lion (elevation 2031).
(5) At the pass, leave theGRP® and take the steep path on your left (marked by cairns) which, in a few minutes, leads to the summit of Pic du Lion (altitude 2102).
(6) At the summit, you will find a large cairn and a beautiful view. Take the path on your left along the beautiful Crête de la Coume du Lion ridge, which leads to Port de Pierrefite (altitude 1857).
(3) At Port de Pierrefite, take the tarmac track that supports the GRP®.
This is not the most interesting part.
(7) Pass by the Refuge du Mont Né and its refreshing water source.
Continue along the track to Port de Balès (S/E).
