Description of the walk

Car park at Port de Balès (1755m).

(S/E) Head west towards Mont Né along a narrow path that runs alongside the road for around 100 metres, then heads towards the Mont Né Refuge.
After a few minutes, join the pastoral road that leads to the refuge (this road, which is in poor condition, is reserved for shepherds' vehicles). Follow this road to the Refuge du Mont Né.

(1) Continue along the GRP® to Port de Pierrefite (1857 m).

(2) At Port de Pierrefite, you can see the Cromlech overlooking the Oueil valley below. Continue along the GRP® towards Lac de Bordères (de Bareilles). You need to cross the cattle fence that marks the "border" between the Haute-Garonne and the Hautes Pyrénées. There is an open passage for hikers.
Then head down towards Lac de Bordères (de Bareilles) along a narrow path.
After about 500 m, the path becomes harder to find, although it is signposted, it has been gullied down the steep slope, on sometimes slippery schistose rock. You have to be careful where you step to avoid slipping. This tricky section only lasts about fifty metres, then the path becomes easy again, still downhill towards the lake, before climbing a little on the last section of the route.

(3) The lake emerges with its clear turquoise waters when the sun is shining. In summer, you may come across free-roaming horses watering here.

Take the same route back to the Port de Balès car park (S/E).

Practical information

From Bagnères-de-Luchon: follow signs for Col de Peyresourde (D618), then after 5 km turn right towards Bourg-d'Oueil (D51). As you enter Bourg-d'Oueil, turn immediately right towards Port-de-Balès (take care to drive slowly, as the road is narrow and winding and sometimes strewn with boulders and sheep). There is a car park at Port de Balès.

50 m after the Mont Né refuge there is a spring from which you can refill your water supply, which flows even in summer.
You can also find water before you reach the lake, as a stream crosses the path.
Finally, the water in the lake is drinkable, it is clear and there are plenty of trout, which is a sign that the water is not polluted.
It takes about 1 hour to get to Port de Pierrefite, and another hour to get to Lac de Bordères (de Bareilles) without hurrying and with a few breaks.

In the nearby area

From the Port de Pierrefite, you can follow the ridge up to Mont Né (2147 m) (a fairly steep but easy climb). On the west side, you can see the Vallée d'Oueil below, and further south, the peaks topping out at over 3,000 m, including the Massif de la Maladetta. On the east side, in fine weather, you can see the Pic du Midi de Bigorre.

Hi, I did this walk yesterday, the first of June 2025. Easy route, except for the final 1.5 km which includes a few sections where you have to watch where you put your feet! Beautiful mountain lake, sumptuous scenery, nearby snow, peace and quiet, just happiness!

Be careful, not too popular at this time of year but very popular in summer as it is very beautiful and very easy, except perhaps for the short passage over shale where you should avoid bringing people who are a bit motor-impaired.

Lac de Bareilles is also known as Lac de Bordères and is more often indicated on signs.

A very pleasant walk to a magnificent lake, a pleasant setting, crowded at the height of the season but easy to spread out around the lake.

We did this route with some young teenagers in the spring sunshine and it was a wonderful day. We chose this hike because it was marked easy and because two of the children are not used to hiking in the mountains. So it was a perfect choice!

We know this hike from having done it several times (every time we're in the region at Luchon). But this year we only did it as far as the Col de Pierrefitte.
Please note that dogs are not allowed, even when tied up, which was not the case the last time we did it.

Quite an easy walk, apart from a short 100m section that requires more attention. Made under a cloud cover and a little light rain of short duration, return by the Mount Né.

A lovely walk for the whole family, with one very tricky section after the switchover to the Pastoral Zone.

The 3.4km approach hike was dug out with a mechanical shovel and probably dynamite, and the icing on the cake was driveable... So not very interesting, and representing 80% of the hike.
Fortunately, the lake is very nice.

The path to the lake is easy to follow. There is a slightly more difficult stretch of 50-100m, but it's quite doable! The lake is magnificent and the views of the Pyrenees are sublime.

Our hike took place entirely in the clouds, apart from a break in the sky at the edge of the lake which enabled us to take two photos... Apart from this minor inconvenience, the path is very easy to follow and it's an outing that would be perfect for a gentle refresher.

On the descent to the lake there are two or three dangerous stretches, especially for the elderly.

very easy hike...one short section of 200m a little slippery
the first part, from Port de Balès to the pass, is very easy as you pass the refuge.
The second part is the most interesting, with a superb view over the valley and Lac de Bareilles.

NB: to avoid any surprises, you should know that Lac de Bareilles is also called Lac de Borderes :-)

Lovely walk with a splendid lake. Lots of people (it's the last Sunday in August).
The part up to the pass, on the road, is a bit tedious. After that it's great.
After lunch at the lake, we climbed up to the Col du Lion. After lunch at the lake, we climbed up to the Col du Lion, then over the peak to the Hourgue de la Fausserette and back to the Col de Pierrefite.
It's a bit longer, with a bit more difference in altitude, which makes the grading more 'average' than 'easy'.
In any case, it's worth the effort. Saw some vultures and a sparrowhawk (and a beautiful flock of sheep with a couple of Bordeurs at work - what a joy).
