Circular path in the Barousse forest amongst beech and pine trees

Starting from Les Granges de Crouhens, after Ferrère, this circular walk will take you through part of the Barousse Forest. With a bit of luck, you may spot deer, which are quite numerous in this forest.

Description of the walk

In Mauléon-Barousse, head towards Ferrère and Port de Balès (well-known to cyclists). Pass Ferrère and the chalets of Saint-Nérée. Park just before the small bridge spanning "L'Ourse de Ferrère" at Les Granges de Crouhens.

(S/E) Cross the small bridge and turn immediately left, towards “Port de Balès”.

(1) After 250m, take the small path on the right, marked by a large stone at the entrance. The start of the path is a bit steep for 100m, somewhat cluttered with branches and vegetation, but very wide.

(2) Take a sharp left-hand bend, leaving the old path opposite, which is very overgrown.

(3) Turn right; do not go onto the small plateau opposite. Take the path that climbs between the beech trees; it is not very visible as it is covered in leaves. Above all, avoid the track that descends to the left, which is overgrown with grass.

(4) Take the forest track that descends to the right; ignore the one climbing steeply opposite and the one descending to the left.

(5) At the end of the Piste Forestière de Bourdares, follow the forest road (gravel track) to the left.

(6) At the junction, turn right and ignore the “Trés Culs” forest track on the left.

(7) Turn right and leave the track straight ahead.

(8) Pass the “Chiouarnau” forest track, which heads back the way you came, and continue straight on.

(9) At the 1289m mark, ignore the track heading back to the left and continue straight on along this wide forest road.

(10) A little further on, at an elevation of 1300 metres, leave the path on the left that climbs to the Cabane d'Areng and the peak of the same name, and continue straight on.
On the right, there is an opportunity to stop for a short break. There is a picnic table that does not appear on the map but is actually there, under a large beech tree and surrounded by a very pleasant lawn.

(11) Leave the forest track and take the path on the right across the lawn towards the hut with picnic tables clearly visible below, after admiring the Col de l'Aouet and the Pic d'Areng opposite (the hut is not shown on the map; it was built in 2016).
Then cross the tarmac forest road and the Ruisseau de Salabe. Pass by the Artigue de l'Aouet hut and take the track through the grass on the right.

(12) Head straight on, then take the path furthest to the right. Keep following the Ruisseau de Salabe on your right.

(13) Take the track that climbs slightly ahead. Do not turn right towards the stream and the tarmac forest road. Cross a grassy area with ferns, depending on the season, keeping the stream on your right.

(14) Take a short break at the two tables, then take the wide track on the right. Cross the small bridge and continue along this same track. At the Fork in the road, go straight on and continue along the Salabe Forest Road.

(15) Turn left and, with the Salabe Stream still accompanying you but this time on your left, return to the starting point (S/E).

Notes

A stream runs alongside most of the circular loop and there are 4 picnic areas with tables.

Worth a visit

At (10), you can head to the Cabane d'Areng and then on to the Pic d'Areng.

The ascent can also be made from the Col de l'Aouet, which is easier than from the point (10).

From the Col de l'Aouet, you can head right towards Cap Nestès, which overlooks the Nistos Cap Nestès cross-country ski resort.

Route completed on 9 July 2022, on a sunny day.
Total time: 5 hours 20 minutes (having taken the wrong path several times – I’d say we lost about 30 minutes – plus a 20-minute picnic break… and a somewhat hazardous exit from the forest).
Elevation gain: 700m (not 1000+ as indicated, surely a glitch due to the first ‘peak’ on the elevation profile, which doesn’t actually exist)

It’s a bit steep for the first 2km or so, which really works the thighs and calves. Once you reach the forest track, it gets much easier. Just follow the forest track, then the forest road.

Towards the end of the forest section, when you have to follow the stream on your right, be careful. Depending on the season, the ferns can be… tall (over 1.80m), and numerous (to the point where you can’t see more than 10m ahead). And the nettles too.
The undergrowth is very thick and it can be slippery in places.
Bring tick repellent (or something to remove them with).

Despite this slightly tricky bit, the walk is really lovely and pleasant. It’s more of a stroll than a hike (once you’ve got past the steep start).

We spotted two does at two different times – it’s always a surprise!

Hello,
I had some difficulty finding the start of the path and would like to pass on some additional information for future hikers.
The path entrance is 100 metres from the bridge, past the ‘caution: falling rocks’ sign. The large boulder was covered in moss and brambles, as was the entrance, which was blocked by bushes, so I couldn’t spot it. I therefore had to feel my way and set off by guesswork.
On my return, I took the time to clear the entrance, remove the moss from the rock and re-erect a signpost bearing some recommendations. This signpost, which had been broken when the council’s brush cutters passed through, was lying in the ditch beneath the brambles.

This walk is lovely and very pleasant in the winter sunshine; a bit long, of course, but well worth doing (no difficulty)!
However, there are some major errors in the description at the start
- After the car park, take the path 100 metres to the right, blocked by two boulders.
-At the end of this path, take a sharp right (not straight ahead as indicated)
- Then stay on this main path.
-At the junction with the Bourdates forest road, turn right and stay on this main path.
-At the junction with the dirt track, turn left. After that, it’s fine; stay on the main track until you reach the
.
However, the elevation gain of 1000 m is completely wrong. 500 to 600 m max seems more accurate to me (see the IGN map).
It took me 5½ hours at a leisurely pace.
Best regards
Jacques

A lovely walk in glorious weather. Just a quick note: at marker 1, immediately after the path that climbs steeply for 100 metres, turn right onto the wide forest track. There’s a lovely picnic table in full sun between markers 10 and 11. Setting off at 9 am, we reached this table by midday. This spot marks the halfway point of the walk. I think I’ll plan it again for next winter, but on snowshoes this time. Happy walking to everyone!

Hello,

I went on a hike at the end of March; there was quite a lot of snow above 1,100 metres, but nothing insurmountable.
However, I recorded an elevation gain of 830 metres, not the 1,092 metres stated.
The ‘difficult’ rating seems a bit exaggerated to me; I would have rated it ‘moderate’. The hike took 4½ hours, including a lunch break and with a 7-year-old child...
Thanks for this hike in any case

Sébastien
