The Hohneck massif, between Grande Vallée and Petite Vallée de Munster

Not to be missed! This is one of the most iconic and famous hikes in the Vosges. The landscapes and views of the entire Vosges mountain range, the Black Forest and even the Alps (on a clear day) are simply magnificent. If you're lucky, you may even spot chamois on the slopes of Hohneck, so don't forget your binoculars!

⚠️ This route is not accessible in winter. The route between (4), (2) and (5) is closed from 1 November to 30 April 2022 (Prefectural Order of 18 May 2022).

Description of the walk

Parking available at the Gaschney station car park

(S/E) From the car park, climb up and walk alongside the Gaschney farm, then turn left towards Schiessroth along the tarmac path marked with red-white-red rectangles. The climb is sometimes a little steep and the path is strewn with small gravel that can be slippery. Arrive at the Schiessroth farmhouse inn.

(1) Take the path marked with red rectangles towards Hohneck. Continue to the Scheferthal Pass.

(2) Continue left on the path marked with red rectangles, which follows theGR®®5, and arrive at the summit of Hohneck.

(3) Go around the inn and descend the other side on the path marked with red rectangles to the Col du Falimont.

(4) Turn right onto the red-white-red marked trail that runs along the northern flank of Hohneck and return to Col du Scheferthal.

(2) This time, continue left along the Red Triangle marked trail. Occasional walkers may find this difficult, as there are some steep and difficult sections. Continue to the Schallern restaurant.

(5) Walk past the restaurant, then take the downhill path, still marked with red triangles, and return to the Gaschney car park (S/E).

A beautiful hike in good weather, for the views and the fresh air. The directions are clear. Good food at the Schiessroth inn, open from noon only, so book ahead if you want to eat inside, otherwise there is a terrace with a beautiful view.
The Hohneck inn is very busy, self-service, large terrace, beautiful view, but only one toilet at the weekend for so many people!
The descent to Schallern is narrow, then very steep over small rocks, which are slippery if it has rained, and really "difficult" for anyone who is not used to walking or has mobility issues.
Otherwise, definitely worth doing. We did it in 4 hours including a lunch break.

Opinion of a budding hiker (who did put on her walking shoes): we extended the hike a little by going via Lake Schiessrothried at the start of the route. The climbs are pleasant and the views magnificent. It should be noted that the climb between points 2 and 3 (GR5) is blocked because the path is currently being restored; However, it is possible to climb directly to Hohneck by taking a path that goes straight up between points 2 and 4, which starts at a pile of rocks halfway along the route. This avoids having to go back and forth via the Falimont pass (point 4).
Hohneck is very busy as it is accessible by car...
Some of the downhill sections are a little technical (wet and sandy rocks) but overall it's an accessible hike for occasional hikers that just makes you want to go back!

A must-see but rather challenging route. The magical Hohneck summit, plus several dining options.
