Gaschney, Hohneck, Schiessrothried: in search of chamois

The slopes of the Hohneck and the surrounding glacial cirques are all areas frequented by the chamois reintroduced to the Vosges in the 1950s, over 60 years ago.
You might just spot them on this hike.

The BloyGR®®531trail between (S/E) and (1) is closed from 1 November to 30 April under a prefectural order dated 18 May 2022.

Description of the walk

Park in the car park at Gaschney.

(S/E) The Blue Rectangle marked trail winds its way northwards between two chalets. It will take you directly to Frankental. Allow a good hour’s walk to get there. The trail marked on the map differs slightly from the actual route, but there is only one path and it is impossible to go wrong.

(1) After the Frankental farmhouse inn, take the Yellow Disc marked trail to your left, heading west. It leads to the Col du Falimont at an altitude of nearly 1,300 metres. The trail begins by skirting a large bog before tackling the steep climb.

(2) At the pass, take a moment to admire the view of the glacial cirque below, then follow the Red Rectangle-marked trail to the summit of the Hohneck, about fifteen minutes away.

(3) The Hohneck is the highest point of this hike, at an altitude of 1,363 metres. From the orientation table, the view is magnificent on a clear day. Then continue south-west, following the Yellow Cross-marked trail to the Col du Wormspel.

(4) At the Col du Wormspel, you have the option of shortening the route by descending directly to Lac du Schiessrothried via the path on the left, following the Blue Triangle-marked trail.
Alternatively, continue along the Sentier des Névés, marked with a Yellow Cross. The path follows the ridge line and takes its name from the fact that in winter, with the wind blowing at these altitudes, numerous snowfields (accumulations of snow) form along these ridges.
Opposite the Hohneck, you will reach the ridge of the Spitzkoepfle.

(5) At the Spitzkoepfle, take a moment to look down the slopes of the Hohneck. It is not uncommon to spot chamois there.
Continue on your way, still on the snowfield path marked with Yellow Crosses, until you reach the next junction.

(6) At the crossroads, keep left to descend to the Kastelberg farmhouse inn, at a place called Kastelbergwasen.

(7) From there, take the path on the other side of the road, marked with a Blue Rectangle, to reach the hamlet of Kerbholz.

(8) At Kerbholz you have two options:

  • the first (shown on the map) is to continue following the Blue Rectangle trail to the left until you reach Lake Schiessrothried. However, this trail is difficult (see Practical Information),
  • the second is to head straight on along the Blue Cross-marked trail down to Lake Fischboedle, then climb back up to Lake Schiessrothried following the Red Rectangle-marked trail. This alternative is easier but will take you lower down than Schiessrothried, meaning you’ll have to climb back up again.

If you take the Blue Rectangle route, you will encounter an initial series of challenges until you reach a small footbridge spanning a stream.

(9) At the footbridge, continue on your way to the scree slope.

(10) The path crosses a vast scree slope for over 100 metres. Take care where you place your feet.

(11) Further on, at the Col du 1er Spitzkoepfe, a short detour to the right offers a remarkable view, with the small Lake Fischboedle below. Then descend towards Lake Schiessrothried.

(12) Cross the lake’s dam and take the path that starts on the other side, continuing along the dam. It is marked with a Blue Rectangle at the start. After about 50 m, the path up to the Schiessroth farmhouse inn branches off to the left, marked with a Red Rectangle. This is the final climb of our hike. At the top of the climb, the path takes a cross-cut to pass beneath the farmhouse inn.

(13) Once you reach the Schiessroth farmhouse inn, take the path marked with a Red Rectangle-White Rectangle-Red Rectangle to head back down to Gaschney, the starting point of the hike (S/E).

Notes

The route passes along very steep paths. Make sure you wear good walking shoes.

There are several farm inns along the route: (1) at Frankental, at Hohneck, at (7) Kastelbergwasen, (13) at Schiessroth. You’ll find food and drink there. Most have ‘picnic’ areas you can use, sometimes provided you buy a drink at the bar.

The path between (8) Kerbholz and the scree (10) is signposted as having “difficult sections”. These sections are genuinely difficult and you need good walking boots to tackle them. Trainers are strictly forbidden. There are handrails and steps carved into the rocks to help you navigate the trickiest sections.
The alternative is to follow the marked Blue Cross trail from Kerbholz to Fischboedle Lake, then from there, head up to Schiessrotried Lake via theGR®®5(Red Rectangle).

This route passes through a protected area, which may be subject to special regulations:

Worth a visit

In the glacial cirque above Lake Schiessrothried, it is not uncommon to see chamois.
The (5) Spitzköpfe is a good vantage point for viewing the slopes below the Hohneck.

A superb hike for a couple (a man and woman in their thirties) with our four-year-old border collie.

We started the hike at around 1 p.m. from Lake Schiessrothried. It was great for us to stop at the inn after the first climb.

After the break, there was a paved section, which other reviewers said could be avoided.

Everything else was sublime. We saw some chamois. It was easier when our dog spotted them for us 😅

The return trip to Schiessrothried Lake is quite technical, especially with a dog. But it's still doable with a dog that listens.

Thank you again for this superb hike.

A beautiful route through the Hautes Vosges, physically demanding but well worth it for the diversity of the landscapes and trails. We enjoyed stopping for lunch at the Kastelberg farmhouse inn.

Hike completed on Friday 27 May despite very cloudy and windy weather. The hike is classified as difficult but could be very difficult. Please be careful between points 8 and 9, as the cables to help with the climb are very damaged and in poor condition in many places. 😊😊. The section between the start and point 2 is very long and difficult.

A superb hike with varied paths and landscapes, magnificent views. Much of the route is shaded, which is very welcome.
I did it in 4½ hours without stopping for lunch.
Crossing the scree is perfectly doable, you just need to concentrate on what you're doing!!!
This is a very popular route.

A beautiful hike on technical and fun trails with magnificent views! Best done on a sunny day. We spotted a chamois in the Falimont valley.
After the Schiessroth farm, we followed the blue triangle trail towards Schallern to avoid the small paved road.
Thank you very much!
