Park in the car park at Gaschney.
(S/E) The Blue Rectangle marked trail winds its way north between two chalets. It will take you directly to Frankental. Allow a good hour's walk to get there. The trail marked on the map differs slightly from the actual route, but there is only one trail and it is impossible to go wrong.
(1) After the Frankental farmhouse inn, take the yellow disc trail on your left towards the west. It leads to the Col du Falimont at an altitude of nearly 1,300 metres. The trail starts by skirting a large peat bog before tackling the steep climb.
(2) At the pass, take the time to admire the view of the glacial cirque below, then take the red rectangle signposted trail to the summit of Hohneck, about 15 minutes away.
(3) Hohneck is the highest point of this hike, at an altitude of 1,363 m. The view from the orientation table is magnificent on a clear day. Continue south-west, following the yellow cross trail to the Col du Wormspel.
(4) At the Col du Wormspel, you can shorten the route by descending directly to the Lac du Schiessrothried via the path on the left, following the blue triangle trail.
Otherwise, continue on the Sentier des Névés marked with a yellow cross. The trail follows the ridge line and gets its name from the numerous snowfields (accumulations of snow) that form along these ridges in winter when the wind blows at these altitudes.
Opposite the Hohneck, you will arrive at the Spitzkoepfle ridge.
(5) At Spitzkoepfe, take the time to observe the slopes of Hohneck. It is not uncommon to see chamois here.
Continue along the path marked with yellow crosses until you reach the next crossroads.
(6) At the crossroads, keep left and descend to the Kastelberg farmhouse inn in Kastelbergwasen.
(7) From there, take the path on the other side of the road, marked with a blue rectangle, to Kerbholz.
(8) At Kerbholz, you have two options:
- the first (marked on the map) is to continue following the blue rectangle trail on the left to the Schiessrothried lake. However, this trail is difficult (see Practical information),
- the second is to go straight ahead and take the path marked with a blue cross to descend to the Fischboedle lake, then climb back up to the Schiessrothried lake by following the path marked with a red rectangle. This alternative is easier but will take you lower than the Schiessrothried, which means you will have to climb back up.
If you take the Blue Rectangle, you will pass a first series of difficulties until you reach a small footbridge over a stream.
(9) At the footbridge, continue along the path until you reach the scree.
(10) The path crosses a huge scree slope for over 100 m. Take care where you place your feet.
(11) Further on, at the Col du 1er Spitzkoepfe, a detour to the right offers a remarkable view of the small Lac de Fischboedle below. Then descend towards Lac du Schiessrothried.
(12) Cross the lake's retaining dam and take the path that starts on the other side, continuing along the dam. It is marked with a blue rectangle at the start. After about 50 m, the path up to the Schiessroth farmhouse inn branches off to the left, marked with a red rectangle. This is the last climb of our hike. At the top of the climb, the trail crosses to pass under the farmhouse inn.
(13) When you reach the Schiessroth farmhouse inn, take the path marked with a red-white-red rectangle to descend to Gaschney, the starting point of the hike (S/E).
