Park in the car park at Gaschney.
(S/E) The Blue Rectangle marked trail winds its way northwards between two chalets. It will take you directly to Frankental. Allow a good hour’s walk to get there. The trail marked on the map differs slightly from the actual route, but there is only one path and it is impossible to go wrong.
(1) After the Frankental farmhouse inn, take the Yellow Disc marked trail to your left, heading west. It leads to the Col du Falimont at an altitude of nearly 1,300 metres. The trail begins by skirting a large bog before tackling the steep climb.
(2) At the pass, take a moment to admire the view of the glacial cirque below, then follow the Red Rectangle-marked trail to the summit of the Hohneck, about fifteen minutes away.
(3) The Hohneck is the highest point of this hike, at an altitude of 1,363 metres. From the orientation table, the view is magnificent on a clear day. Then continue south-west, following the Yellow Cross-marked trail to the Col du Wormspel.
(4) At the Col du Wormspel, you have the option of shortening the route by descending directly to Lac du Schiessrothried via the path on the left, following the Blue Triangle-marked trail.
Alternatively, continue along the Sentier des Névés, marked with a Yellow Cross. The path follows the ridge line and takes its name from the fact that in winter, with the wind blowing at these altitudes, numerous snowfields (accumulations of snow) form along these ridges.
Opposite the Hohneck, you will reach the ridge of the Spitzkoepfle.
(5) At the Spitzkoepfle, take a moment to look down the slopes of the Hohneck. It is not uncommon to spot chamois there.
Continue on your way, still on the snowfield path marked with Yellow Crosses, until you reach the next junction.
(6) At the crossroads, keep left to descend to the Kastelberg farmhouse inn, at a place called Kastelbergwasen.
(7) From there, take the path on the other side of the road, marked with a Blue Rectangle, to reach the hamlet of Kerbholz.
(8) At Kerbholz you have two options:
- the first (shown on the map) is to continue following the Blue Rectangle trail to the left until you reach Lake Schiessrothried. However, this trail is difficult (see Practical Information),
- the second is to head straight on along the Blue Cross-marked trail down to Lake Fischboedle, then climb back up to Lake Schiessrothried following the Red Rectangle-marked trail. This alternative is easier but will take you lower down than Schiessrothried, meaning you’ll have to climb back up again.
If you take the Blue Rectangle route, you will encounter an initial series of challenges until you reach a small footbridge spanning a stream.
(9) At the footbridge, continue on your way to the scree slope.
(10) The path crosses a vast scree slope for over 100 metres. Take care where you place your feet.
(11) Further on, at the Col du 1er Spitzkoepfe, a short detour to the right offers a remarkable view, with the small Lake Fischboedle below. Then descend towards Lake Schiessrothried.
(12) Cross the lake’s dam and take the path that starts on the other side, continuing along the dam. It is marked with a Blue Rectangle at the start. After about 50 m, the path up to the Schiessroth farmhouse inn branches off to the left, marked with a Red Rectangle. This is the final climb of our hike. At the top of the climb, the path takes a cross-cut to pass beneath the farmhouse inn.
(13) Once you reach the Schiessroth farmhouse inn, take the path marked with a Red Rectangle-White Rectangle-Red Rectangle to head back down to Gaschney, the starting point of the hike (S/E).
