A short, ideal walk at Gaschney to get back into shape at the start of the season; no major difficulties apart from a slightly steep climb between (2) and (3). Suitable for families.

Description of the walk

Park in the Gaschney car park.

(S/E) Take the path at the edge of the forest heading north-east, towards the far end of the car park, with your back to the access road and the ski runs. After a few hundred metres, on your left in the pasture, you’ll find the Alpine Hunters’ Memorial. Continue along this track, which also forms part of theGR®531, until you reach a crossroads at a hairpin bend.

(1) Leave theGR® and take the path on the left. After a few hundred metres, you’ll reach the ruins of aFirst World War field hospital.

(2) Ignore the sign here pointing left: ‘Direct to Gaschney’, and take the path leading uphill to the right. Head back into the forest. Keep to the left, passing three other paths on your right. You’ll reach the foot of the ski lifts.

(3) Take the path that winds steeply upwards to the left. Continue along a pleasant route through the trees, crossing numerous streams that feed the peat bog below; these streams may be more or less dry depending on the weather.
At the end of the path, ignore a path leading down to the left and turn right, winding your way between the houses and the refuge building, before returning to the Gaschney car park (S/E).

Notes

Two other walks partly follow sections of these paths: see the guides:
- No. 2179443 Schallern Circular Loop
- No. 2178155 To the Gaschneyried.

Between (3) and (S/E) The path can be quite waterlogged in places, especially if there has been heavy rain in the preceding days, so please ensure you have suitable kit or shorten the circular route by turning left at (2) – for details, see listing no. 2178155).
In summer, watch out for mosquitoes; the bog is a stretch of muddy, stagnant water.

Worth a visit

Before (1) Monument in memory of the Alpine Hunters.
Between (1) and (2) Ruins of aFirst World War field hospital situated amongst the trees. You can follow a small path downhill to see the ruins up close. Be careful, however, of possible falling rocks.

A short walk through the snow in the forest, with a few points of interest relating to the First World War. Little streams here and there, much to the delight of our dog – and us! And some superb ice falls! Between 4 pm and 5 pm, we were alone on the path on this sunny February day. We really enjoyed the peace and quiet!
