The Bausson massif and the Cime de Baudon from Saint-Agnès

This magnificent route, set in wild, unspoilt countryside in a little-known area, is at times closer to mountaineering, due to its small technical and exposed sections, than to a classic hike. It provides access to the Bausson massif, then to Baudon, a summit offering exceptional views of the surrounding mountains, the sea, and Corsica on a clear day. There are no paths between points (3) and (6): the Visorando app may prove useful.

Description of the walk

Park in the Sainte-Agnès car park.

GR®51 red and white markings

(DA) Head towards marker 440 and take the path towards Col de Bausson. Reach marker 457.

(1) Turn left towards Col de Bausson. Continue along the ascending path where the first views of the village of Sainte-Agnès come into view. At the tarmac road of Font de Baou, continue straight ahead and reach a junction with a sign (no direction indicated) and a cairn.

(2) Turn left onto the path. Walk past the beautiful ruins dotted along the terraces, then head into a pine forest. You will reach a crossroads with a cairn.

Blue markings and cairns

(3) Leave the GR® and turn right. A few faded blue markers and cairns mark the ascending path. As you enter the wooded area, and at the first rock outcrop (alt. 880 m), continue straight ahead on the path. Upon exiting the forest, join the ridge line on the left: cairns are present. Mont Agel overlooks the western area.

(4) At this point (alt. 900 m), there is a sloping, gravelly area on the left. Descend due west, keeping the rock face on your left, for about thirty metres, until you reach a tree with ten distinctive small trunks, which is the only one there (alt. 880 m). Pass through the trunks, cross the stony area, and head due north, through small boulders, marked by cairns to help you find the paths. Continue along the ridge line.

(5) Large boulders: cross a beautiful sharp limestone pavement where a herd of wild goats has established its territory. Follow the track, which leads to a pass. Beyond this, the path joins, further on, a yellow-marked trail.

Yellow markings

(6) Turn left. The path climbs gradually through a wooded area and reaches the Cime de Baudon and its orientation table: exceptional views.

(7) Turn back.

(6) Turn left and head for the Pas de la Piastre trail junction: marker 475.

(8) Turn right towards Sainte-Agnès, pass marker 457, and continue straight on to reach the car park (S/E).

Trekking poles and hiking boots recommended.

Equipment: a pair of secateurs and the Visorando app.

This route is not recommended for people who have difficulty walking or who are afraid of heights.

Bear in mind that the route is at times closer to mountaineering due to its short technical and exposed sections.

There is no water along the route.

Worth a visit

Sainte-Agnès: visit the ruins of the 12th-century castle (free).

Maginot Line fort (€6 entry): a very interesting guided tour.

Great outing, one of the best I've done in the area. Really beautiful.
Off the trail marked by cairns between markers 3 and 6: beautiful and challenging passage along the ridges. Passage close to the cliffs.
Trousers essential.
I'll definitely be back. Thanks for this route 😁

A superb hike with breathtaking views.
However, there is a fairly technical section between points 3 and 5: the path is hard to find, and it’s not always easy to make your way through the vegetation. There are sections where you have to climb. Don’t wear shorts.

Stunning views of the mountains and the sea. The walk is a bit challenging in places but manageable. St Agnes, a hilltop village – I believe the highest on the coast – is well worth a visit; you’ll find a small grocery shop and some restaurants there. Visiorando is very useful for certain unmarked sections
