Description of the walk

The start is at the chapel, below the village of Sainte-Agnès. There is parking available right next to it.

(S/E) Follow the road westwards towards the Col des Banquettes. After about twenty metres, take a path on the left.

(1) At marker 457, turn right towards the Cime du Baudon. Head up, generally heading north-west.

(2) At Pas de la Piastre (marker 475 is missing), turn left to continue along the ridge to the summit (panoramic view).

(3) Descend, continuing along the ridge towards the west.

(4) At marker 556 (not seen during my visit, elevation 1195), turn left (south). Descend a scree slope to the south-east, then turn sharply right (south-west).

(5) At marker 555, turn sharply right and follow the direction of the Col de Saint-Bernard.

(6) At marker 554, continue straight on (west) towards the Col de Saint-Bernard. When the path turns left to join a road, leave it and continue straight on towards an antenna. At the foot of this, veer left to reach the Col du Saint-Bernard (marker 552).

(7) Then turn right (north) towards the Pas d'Ongrand.

(8) After a short stretch on the road, rejoin a dirt track at marker 595, continuing towards the Pas d'Ongrand. You’ll come out onto a road; follow it to the right for about fifty metres and take a path on the left.

(9) At Pas d'Ongrand, cross the bridge and begin your ascent towards Col du Farguet.

(10) Cross the Route de l'Escarène to rejoin the path climbing to the pass (north-west then north).

(11) At the Col du Farguet (marker 116), head east towards Ségra and its pass. Go round Mont Méras and Mont Avellan to the north.

(12) At Ségra, continue south-east towards the Col de Ségra and Mont Ours. Climb a short series of hairpin bends to reach marker 126.

(13) At the Col de Ségra (marker 125), take the path heading south-east which climbs to the Baisse du Loup and Mont Ours.

(14) Then turn left and you will soon reach marker 127.

(15) Turn right towards the summit of Mont Ours.

(16) Pass the antennas and the fort to reach the gate at the entrance to the building.

(17) At marker 129, head south towards the Col du Verrous. Descend a somewhat tricky scree slope; take care.

(18) At marker 472, turn left (north-east) onto the track towards the Col de Verroux.

(19) At marker 469, continue straight on (south-east) to reach the Col de Verroux (marker 446).

(20) Take thefirst path on the right (west) towards the Ravin de Verroux and Sainte-Agnès.

(21) Descend in hairpin bends along the ravine. Pass markers 445 and 444, keeping in the direction of Peyre Grosse (south then south-east).

(22) At marker 443, follow a track to the right towards Sainte-Agnès via Peyre Grosse.

(23) You’ll come out at a hairpin bend (marker 442) and take the left-hand branch, downhill, towards Sainte-Agnès.

(24) At the hamlet of Peyre Grosse, cross a stream and continue south-east.

(25) Join the Col des Banquettes road and follow it to the left as far as Sainte-Agnès (S/E).

Notes

Note: a hike that is not particularly technical but is long and starts off quite steeply. The Baudon/Farguet section can be challenging, so pace yourself. The circular hike takes 6 hours of actual walking.

I did this hike with my almost 14-year-old son as part of our training for the GR20. The elevation gain is tough, especially at the beginning, but the scenery is stunning!
However, be warned about the walking time: it's almost impossible to do this hike in 6 hours without running... It took us an hour longer.
I think it would be reasonable to say that it should take at least 7.5 hours.

I can confirm that this is a challenging hike; it took me 6 hours and 15 minutes of actual walking at a brisk pace, so allow 7 hours to be on the safe side. A lovely hike, with plenty of variety

For the attention of severine62

I am the person who created this route on Visorando.

Firstly, the distances are calculated automatically by the software based on the route on the IGN map.

Secondly, the description header clearly states that this is a hike rated ‘VERY DIFFICULT’ with over 1,700 metres of elevation gain (!!!) and an average duration of 11 hours 50 minutes, all of which includes 3 passes and 2 summits to climb. Did you really think you could set off at 11.00 am and be back in time for afternoon tea?

The 6 hours’ walking time given AS A GUIDE in the comments applies to experienced hikers like my friends and myself, who are used to the mountains and took part in the Saint Agnès Criterium, during which the route was followed. Once again, all the technical details listed at the top of the page clearly stated that this route was intended for seasoned walkers. There is a big difference between ‘not being afraid’ of a 20km walk and tackling a 1,700m climb in a single afternoon...

To avoid any disappointment the next time you use a hike description on Visorando, I can only advise you to read everything carefully and, if necessary, ask the author of the guide for clarification. This will prevent you from disparaging the voluntary work involved in scouting, mapping and describing these hikes on the site, when everything has in fact been clearly stated.

Thank you and happy hiking

Based on the description provided by lemarcheur65 regarding this hike, we decided to set aside the whole day for it (estimated duration: 6 hours, 24 km). It’s worth noting that we’re not daunted by walking; we’re used to covering 20 km regularly.
Above all, do not take all the information provided at face value, as we experienced a real nightmare throughout the day. To elaborate, we set off at 11 am and returned at 10.30 pm (in total darkness and in the mountains, which is very, very dangerous); so the 6 hours were far from accurate, and the hike is not 24 km but 33 km.
So, the person who planned and organised this hike will have to explain to me how they managed it.

Very, very angry and disappointed
