The Bayeux des Taffres scrubland

The Puy de Massert (and its remarkable beech trees) served as a lookout point for the Bayeux Maquis (named after the first town liberated by the Allies).

Description of the walk

On the D27 (Bessines to Saint-Pardoux), park in the grassy triangle 200 m east of the Villarcoin junction.

(S/E) Head west to this junction, then turn right onto the dirt track.
Just past the house, leave this track to the right onto a narrow path climbing up into the woods, bordered by a dry stone wall on its left.

(1) At the T-junction with the main track, turn left and continue straight on, heading north-west.

(2) Turn left off this track and join a road (D44), following it to the right for 200 m.

(3) After the house (sign for “Les Roches”), turn right. Pass a remarkable beech tree and reach a road.
(4) Turn right towards the hamlet of Les Taffres. Follow the bend, pass house No. 14 and turn right between the next house and the small garden surrounded by a dry stone wall.

(5) House No. 6: former Resistance command post. At the small square, turn right.
On the right, a commemorative stele.

(6) On leaving the hamlet, turn left onto the stone path heading south-east.

(7) Walk past a dry stone wall that served as a lookout post for the Resistance.
At the fork in the road, go straight ahead, leaving the yellow markings.

(8) At the T-junction, turn right, then 40 m further on, take the single track to the left. You’ll come to a remarkable beech tree, on which the Crosses of Lorraine are carved, the site of the Resistance camp.

(9) Turn back and return to the previous junction.

(8) Continue straight on to the next junction.

(10) Turn right and head back to the fork on the way out.

(1) Turn left as you go downhill to reach the car park (S/E).

A walk taken on a Sunday but with very few people about,
A lovely route mainly through the woods, with the route’s main appeal being historical.
Thanks to the route designer.
