Description of the walk

Park next to the Romanesque church.

(S/E) Head towards the far end of Place Saint-Léger and turn left, following the yellow markings. At the end of the street, take the descending gravel road.

(1) Cross the Ri-Maury over the granite slabs, then go through the green gate on the right. Follow the Ri-Maury along its left bank without taking the wooden bridge, then cross it further on via the embankment. Go through the wooden gate and, once on the Chemin du Vieux Pont, turn left.

Reach the old bridge over the Gartempe, retrace your steps and turn right at the start of the mine path, marked by small wooden posts.

(2) You can descend to the right down to the bank at the Crique des Amis via a short, steep path.

(3) Cross the Ri-Maury ford, which cascades into the Gartempe. The large stones on the left are from the excavation of the Gartempe diversion. The cables and metal strands hold the ground in place.

At the fork (not shown on the IGN map), turn left following the sign for “Belvédère”. At the crossroads by the old wheel, turn left again onto the path leading up to the viewpoint.

(4) This promontory overlooks and separates the Gartempe valley from that of the Ri-Maury. Retrace your steps back to the old waterwheel and continue straight on, following the wall of the shooting range.

(5) Cross the Ri de la Cascade du Général ford. The path descends to the river and becomes increasingly narrow as it leads to the Fontaine beach.

(6) You can follow the riverbank as far as the rapids. Beyond that point, the path is barely passable and does not lead anywhere. Retrace your steps back to the beach.

(6) Take the Chemin du Fraisse on the right, a steep climb. After crossing a low dry-stone wall, take the hairpin bend to the right. Continue straight on along the road called Chemin des Bois, then turn left at the junction and go to the end of the road, where it becomes a farm track.

At the T-junction, turn right onto the Piste des Beiges. At the first detached house on the left, follow its fence through the grass, and then the fence of the second house. Take the sunken path that descends to the Ri-Maury flagstones.

(1) Cross these slabs and then head back up to the village square (S/E).

Stopped by the water level at the old bridge, we retraced our steps to take a small path back to the original route. It was a little-used path, blocked by fallen trees in many places; we even lost the trail twice.
It’s a shame because the site is remarkable; it really deserves to be showcased.

Over the last few days,
The beaver(s) has (have) been spotted on the Sentier de La Mine
just before the rapids.
Three trees have already been gnawed to pieces

Tinker Bell saw communal land stretching as far as the eye could see, including the Chemin and Sentier de la Mine.
Ha ha ha! Not even a pack of hunters on the horizon.

The local route is great up to the bridge, but after that it becomes DISASTROUS!!
Narrow, steep, dangerous (no safety measures, sheer drops, waterfalls with no fords, but above all a SHOOTING RANGE), lack of maintenance on the route (fallen trees) making the end of the route impassable (crossing of the 2nd stream). As we were subjected to gunfire with no chance of being heard, we had to go via the landfill embankment to find our way back...
In short, my son and I were scared, didn’t enjoy this outing and won’t be recommending it.
Trails cannot be improvised, and the risks you are exposing walkers to do not justify this designation.

EARLY MARCH: After a few windy days and just before your visit on the 5th, nature has reclaimed its place along the Mine Trail. Thank you for visiting.
MID-MARCH: Gilbert, Daniel and, thanks to our supporters, we have cleared these trees.
Since the trail was OPENED, we still need to remove a rather steep ramp and its few steps and replace it with a gentler one, i.e. less steep and more even... suspense... it’s in progress!

A lovely landscape in fairly wild countryside. But it’s not an easy route. There were plenty of obstacles on the very narrow path. It took us 40% longer than expected. We were scouting the route for a future group hike, but it won’t be possible – it’s too difficult for some. A shame, as the landscape is beautiful and wild. Best done with agile hikers who can step over or crawl under fallen trees... The slopes are sometimes quite steep, so this route should really only be attempted in dry weather and in a small group.
