Lake Lessy from Cenise

A classic hike in the Bargy massif, between the Arve valley and the Aravis massif. This fairly challenging route takes you to Lac de Lessy, nestled at 1,700 m at the foot of the Aiguille Verte du Chinaillon, and offers magnificent views from the Col de Sosay. Ibex, once abundant, have unfortunately become rare following their mass culling (2014–2015). The bearded vulture remains, as this is its territory, and can be spotted fairly frequently in the area.

Description of the walk

In Le Petit-Bornand-les-Glières, specifically in the Crêt district, take the road leading to the village of Puze, which ends at the Cenise car park.

(S/E) From the car park, follow the wide track that climbs towards the Col de Cenise, up to the second hairpin bend after the Refuge de Cenise.

(1) After leaving the track, head straight up into the mountain pasture heading south-east. After crossing the two access paths to the chalets, head east-south-east until you find a more clearly marked path. Don’t hesitate to use your compass during this first section, as the numerous animal tracks and lack of markings can be misleading.
Join the path coming from the Col de Cenise.

(2) Begin a steep climb between the rocky outcrops to reach a first pass at the foot of the Pointe de Sosay. Although it may look daunting, this section presents neither difficulty nor real danger in dry weather.

(3) Continue to the right, leaving the path on the left that climbs towards the Col du Rasoir and the Pic de Jallouvre, to reach a pond.

(4) After the pool, the path has disappeared beneath a vast scree slope, the result of the 2015 rockfall. Cross the scree slope horizontally in a south-south-westerly direction. Finding your way is not particularly difficult, as the path leading up to the pass is clearly visible at the end of the scree slope (furthermore, a few cairns have been placed along the crossing).
At the end of the scree slope, the most exposed section of the route begins. It presents no major difficulty in dry weather, but can be dangerous in wet conditions. It is not recommended to bring young children or people prone to vertigo here. After about a hundred metres, you reach the Col de Sosay.

(5) Climb for about a hundred metres north-westwards, following the ridge to reach a small viewpoint.

(6) Alternatively, descend gently through the mountain pasture towards the chalets.

(7) You’ll reach Lake Lessy; the only difficulty is the stinging nettles lining the edge of the path.

(6) Return to Cenise via the same route as on the way out (S/E).

Notes

- Access to the Cenise car park is tricky (narrow road, numerous hairpin bends): passing other vehicles can be very difficult in certain sections. It should be avoided with a motorhome!
- Bring water; the only sources of drinking water available are the Cenise refuge (a trickle of water from the fountain in August) and the Lessy chalets.
- Route featuring exposed sections on slippery terrain; avoid in wet weather or with young children. Easier routes are available.
- The route involves crossing scree slopes and rocky outcrops, for which sturdy footwear is recommended.

A somewhat technical route. Most hikers reach Lake Lessy via the Maize chalets or via Cenise Paradis.

- A lovely walk, very pretty, with a stunning view as you reach the lake. Beautiful scenery.
- The last 100 metres before the pass aren’t very easy.
- We did the walk with a 7-year-old girl. I wouldn’t recommend it for younger children.
- In wet weather, the walk can be tricky or even dangerous in several places.
- Apart from the rocks in the middle of the walk, there is plenty of greenery in summer
- The access road by car is long and winding, with lots of tight bends. It’s best to make sure you have enough petrol before setting off. The final stretch is on gravel.
- For the vast majority of the walk, there is no mobile phone signal

A lovely autumn walk – it’s true that the rocks are very slippery in places, especially in the shade! Thank you for the lovely invitation.

Magnificent mountains. Some sections are a bit tricky but still manageable.
A short section through the rocks – really lovely, but take care in wet weather.
