A very pleasant hike from the Solaison plateau with a lovely off-trail section.

Description of the walk

Access

From the A40 motorway, take the Bonneville exit (no. 17), then follow signs for Thuet, Brizon and the Solaison plateau.
In the hamlet of Solaison, park in the car park on the right.

The ascent

(S/E) From the car park, follow the road north-west for 300m, then turn right between the houses in the mountain pastures. Head west-south-west through the pastures to reach the ridge.

(1) The ridge consists mainly of sharp limestone pavement, so you need sure-footedness and must take care in wet weather. Turn right to follow the ridge and climb northwards to the top (Rocher des Grangettes).

(2) Descend back down to the Col de l'Andey.

(3) From the pass, continue straight ahead north-east along the marked path to the Pointe d'Andey.

The descent

(4) The descent is very straightforward; simply follow (or not, as you wish) the south-east-facing path that winds down through the mountain pastures. Once you reach the road, turn left to return to the car park (S/E).

Waypoints

  1. S/E : km 0 - alt. 1,503 m - Car park at the hamlet of Solaison
  2. 1 : km 1.32 - alt. 1,628 m - Start of the ridge, on the right
  3. 2 : km 1.98 - alt. 1,773 m - Top of the ridge, Rocher des Grangettes
  4. 3 : km 2.25 - alt. 1,750 m - Col de l'Andey
  5. 4 : km 2.6 - alt. 1,872 m - Pointe d'Andey (1877m)
  6. S/E : km 4.11 - alt. 1,503 m - Car park at the hamlet of Solaison

Notes

I strongly recommend wearing good footwear for the section through the sharp limestone pavement.

This hike can be done on snowshoes, but be careful: the section along the ridge can be very dangerous as cornices may form.

A GPS route that’s completely off the beaten track; it might be possible in snowy conditions but is impossible in summer. The summit offers a superb view nonetheless

Take care on this hike!

It’s not easy to find your way to the ridge as there’s no path, and once you reach the ridge, the climb can be tricky.

On the other hand: the view is splendid, the scenery is well worth the detour and your efforts will be rewarded.

It may be difficult for children under 13 (unless they are used to it); otherwise, make sure you’re in good shape and have a keen eye for finding your way.

Fun guaranteed in any case!

The area is lovely, but I should have read the reviews before choosing this family walk, which I imagined would be pleasant and accessible given the distance and elevation gain (we’re not mountaineers, but we go out often and have already enjoyed hikes three or four times longer in distance and/or elevation gain)

There really isn’t a path for the first half; I’d set the route on my watch. You end up walking through people’s gardens, and I’m not sure the residents appreciate that, so we turned back to take the main path before reaching the houses.

After that, no path again; we found ourselves in the middle of a sloping field, which was well-maintained but people were starting to grumble... Then we found ourselves crossing another field, but this one was quite wild, and that’s when the grumbling really kicked in. We carried on regardless, having to climb over the electric fences for the cows grazing a little further down, and we finally found ourselves at the foot of the ridge. Still no path, quite dense vegetation, a trail ‘straight up the cliff’ – so we turned back to join the path on the left.

Unfortunately, the children were exhausted after this first adventure, so we couldn’t make it to the top.

There are two tracks when you reach the point opposite La Pointe d’Andey; I think doing a circular route by taking one up and the other down would have been much more enjoyable for a family, especially as the view from the top is superb (I ran up quickly to have a look before we gave up).

A lovely, relatively easy walk! Stunning views of the Bargy massif and Mont Blanc.
Perfect for a short half-day hike.

Between the start and point 1: no path; you have to cross a field.
Between 1 and 2: practically impossible, even for experienced hikers. A path is marked, but it’s just an endless pile of rocks to climb over!
This hike is dangerous and should be removed from Visorando. At the very least, it should be labelled ‘very difficult’ rather than ‘moderate’!!

Please note: there is no path along the ridges; it is quite dangerous. We were with our 8-year-old daughters and turned back to take a more suitable route along a marked path.

The climb up to the ridge is off-trail.

A lovely route to Pointe d'Andey, never too difficult.
It’s best to reach the ridge by cutting across the fields.
Quite quiet until you reach the Col de l'Andey, where you’ll meet hikers coming down from the summit.
A lovely walk.

A lovely walk for a gentle return to the outdoors. The 360° view from the Salève, taking in Lake Geneva, the Môle, the Arve Valley and Mont Blanc, is breathtaking.

It’s not very long, but it’s a continuous, steep climb with no flat sections at all. Rated as ‘moderate’ on Visorando, I’d have rated it a notch higher.
