Le Gros Cerveau and another approach to La Roche Curade in Sanary-sur-Mer

Here is a variation on the hike I described previously (La Roche Curade above Sanary-sur-Mer), which allows you to discover a new trail, climb up to the Pointe du Gros Cerveau fortification, follow the ridges, visit the Garou cave, and approach La Roche Curade from the opposite direction. Only the last quarter of the route is the same as the previous route, but in the opposite direction.

Description of the walk

Coming from Sanary or Bandol via the Route du Beausset, head towards the Jardin Exotique (Chemin de Sainte-Trinide). Once you have passed under the motorway, do not turn left (Jardin Exotique) but continue straight on along the Chemin de Sainte-Trinide. When you reach the Chapelle de Sainte-Trinide (which you will see on your right), continue straight ahead (Chemin de la Piole Paul Venel) for about 600 metres until you see the sign explaining the hiking routes on your left, located just at the start of the path.

Park a little further on the right, where there are three parking spaces along the dry stone wall.

(S/E) Take the red and blue marked trail that starts at the sign and passes between two beautiful properties.

(1) After about 150 metres, take the path that climbs to the left, at a sign indicating:GR®5130 mins. Very quickly, the path turns left, then runs along a balcony overlooking the Sainte-Trinide district, with beautiful views of Bandol Bay.

You will then come to a steep descent, at the end of which you will reach a stream bed. Follow the stream to the right for about 200 metres, before leaving it to take the rocky section on the left, which climbs steeply.

This will take you to a wide forest track (the Chemin des Gros Pins) at a hairpin bend, near the SNR 3 cistern. Follow this track to the right for about 200 m.

(2) Take the steeply ascending path on the right-hand embankment: marked in red and blue, it is the continuation of the path coming from the valley to the left of the track. Climb this path until you reach the ridge road (elevation 269) and turn left. When you reach a cistern, leave the wide track on the left and continue straight ahead to the Pointe Ouest fortification.

(3) You can continue to the left to enjoy beautiful panoramic views, then turn back.

(3) Walk alongside the military buildings and follow theGR® trail, whose red and white markings are clearly visible on the tree trunks in front of the barracks. This trail takes you for a kilometre or so among the rocks of the ridge, with beautiful views to the left and right (caution: difficult terrain!), until you reach the road at the foot of Pointe du Cerveau.

(4) At the bend in the road, at the intersection with theGR®, you will find the entrance to the Garou cave. Carefully descend between the rocks for about ten metres before you find the entrance to the cave on the left. It is a large, multi-level cave that is well worth a long visit.

The climb back up is easier than the descent. Take theGR® trail on the left, heading east. You will rejoin the road at a bend after passing a small (poorly maintained) botanical route and seeing a cistern on the right.

(5) TheGR® continues eastwards, but head south along the forest track closed by a barrier, which you follow downhill for about 250 metres before turning right onto a wide path that climbs gently before descending gradually, still heading south.

After about 400 m on this wide path, in a bend to the left, you will find the entrance to a path on the right, clearly marked by stone borders.

(6) Take this path, which is well maintained with its assembled stone borders. Halfway along, you will see a pine tree in the middle of the path. Then you will begin to see the rocks that form part of the Roche Curade site on your right. Descend carefully and you will find yourself at the site on your right.

Take the time to admire this majestic breaking wave of stone, then continue along the path towards the west. You can't go wrong: first, the trail passes between large rocks, from which you have beautiful views of Roche Curade behind you, then you leave the pine trees for the heath, and the trail joins the blue and red marked trail, which you descend to the left for your return. You arrive at a crossroads.

(7) Turn right (blue and red markings) to descend the path along the rocky bed of a temporary dry stream and you will find yourself back at the starting point.

(1) Turn left to return to the car park (S/E).

Notes

Although easy for the most part, this route does have some tricky sections, such as theGR® section above Pointe du Cerveau and the descent to the Garou cave. It is therefore advisable to be very careful, especially if you are accompanied by children, and for those who are unsure of their footing to avoid the section between (3) and (4), for which they can take the road, as well as visiting the cave.

Of course, you should wear good walking shoes and bring walking sticks, which will often prove useful or even essential.

As the environment is completely dry, make sure you bring plenty to drink in hot weather.

Worth a visit

Between point (1) and the forest track, the path is beautiful, especially in spring when the heather and rosemary are in bloom.

The Pointe fortifications are worth a visit to admire the architectural quality of the military buildings and enjoy the views of Bandol Bay and La Cadière-d'Azur.

Between points (3) and (4), the path among the rocks on the ridge is particularly picturesque, but also dangerous: take particular care where you step, as there are many holes and the risk of breaking a bone is high.

The Garou cave (4) is a natural curiosity not to be missed if you are able to make the very tricky descent. For those interested in caving, I would point out that it has been described in the Var cave database: https://www.fichiertopo.fr/display.php?d...

Before the point (5), you can walk along the circular paths of the botanical trail, hoping that the signs have been repaired.

After the point (5), in the thalweg opposite the junction of our path to the Curade rock, you can go and see the two sinkholes that I described in my previous walk mentioned in the introduction. But be careful, they are very discreet and you need a trained eye to spot them.

The Curade rock is worth a longer stop, both to admire this magnificent wave of stone and to enjoy the panorama from this site, which has been redeveloped by a social integration project.

Finally, between points (7) and (1), on the right, you can see the remains of a lime kiln, although it is not as well preserved as the one in Lançon.

Always be cautious and plan ahead when you're outdoors. Visorando and the author of this route cannot be held responsible for any accidents occurring on this route.

Beautiful hike. Magnificent view of the harbour and the hinterland.
A short tricky section on the ridge, but not too difficult.
Access to the cave requires some acrobatics.

Very nice hike. Not easy to find a place to park at the start.
In addition to Gros Cerveau, Roche Curade is a very beautiful site.

Well, I couldn't/didn't want to do the route because of hunting in progress (on a Wednesday): there was a sign at the start.
Plan B: I drove up via Ollioules to Gros Cerveau and was able to walk along the ridge.
There were lots of hikers at the military fortification known as Gros Cerveau (renovated), but very few to the west of the massif, at the fortification known as La Pointe (the barracks have no roofs).
From the west of the Pointe fortification, a path marked with three blue dots leads to the Forgeron cave, which is easy to access by following the scree.
From this cave, continue the hike north-west for about a hundred metres to a remarkable crevice known as "Clavelle": you can see it from the Forgeron cave.
Then continue the hike.
The Garou cave is magnificent and well worth the effort to visit.
Access to the cave: be careful!
A masonry hold in the rock on the right-hand side as you climb up moves slightly, so do not put your full weight on it!
However, avoid using it when the ground is wet and slippery, as the rock has been worn smooth by numerous visitors.
Thank you, stjo, for these discoveries.

Thanks for the advice, and no worries about the blacksmith's cave; I'll definitely follow belette 83's valuable advice next time. Have a good evening.

@culigan I didn't mention the Forgeron cave, probably because I didn't know about it at the time: there was no indication of it on the map or on the website. You can still get there by following the directions in @Belette83's (very helpful) comment.
I can confirm that access is very difficult, and you really need to be very sure-footed to climb down (very steep and unstable scree).

A very beautiful hike with the Garou cave, but it's a shame that the so-called blacksmith's cave wasn't marked on the map, so we'll have to do the hike again. It's also a shame that the botanical trail hasn't been renovated, as most of the signs are illegible and faded, which is a shame! Fortunately, nature itself is beautiful!

Hello,

We did the route in reverse, with my faithful dog...
We explored the Garou cave, which is well signposted...Nevertheless, you must remain cautious and pay attention to the path. We were able to descend into the cave known as Forgeron, located after the military structure... Please note that this cave is part of a speleological experiment. (laminated A4 sheet placed on the ground); be careful not to touch anything or pick anything up...

A magnificent circular route completed in 2 hours and 45 minutes, including visits.
IGN map used without the author's explanations.

Thank you for this route!

a very interesting hike for its geological curiosities and panoramic views...
FYI: at point 3, near the military site, turn left and walk along the site to admire the view and visit a cave known as "the blacksmith's cave" (not listed?) which is marked by three blue dots on a rock...the descent is a little technical for about twenty metres (scree), but the view is breathtaking!!! We stayed there to visit it (torch required) and have something to eat! It's paradise on earth!!! Then we went opposite to visit another geological curiosity that looks like a cave and is well worth the detour!

We had never been to this part of Gros Cerveau before, and we thoroughly enjoyed it: challenging passages, splendid scenery to the north and south, and amazing geology. And very good, very precise explanations. I would just add that the entrance to the descent to the Garou cave (point 4) is just behind the wooden signpost.

A very interesting hiking route. Clear and precise explanations. We completed the route in 3 hours and 5 minutes, including a snack break and a photo break in the cave. Beautiful views of the bay and the countryside. There are some technical sections between numbers 3 and 4, as well as the descent to the cave. But nothing insurmountable: our 9-year-old child had no problem keeping up . The visit to the cave adds to the enjoyment of the hike. In short, a varied and interesting hike: definitely worth doing!

The actual route is very much as described. A little care is needed at crossroads (in the first part), but in any case, all roads lead to the ridge.
