Description of the walk

Take the road to the Alpe du Grand Serre resort. At the village of La Morte, take the road to the hamlet of Poursollet (D114E) and park in the car park before the hamlet.

(S/E) Turn right onto the wide track that crosses the hamlet, continue on the left via theGR®50(Tour du Dauphiné). Climb gently on a good path to reach a large plateau largely occupied by Lac Fourchu.

(1) Go around the lake on the left and follow a slight incline followed by a flat section, then a slight descent to reach the Refuge du Taillefer.

(2) Leave theGR®50and head north on a poorly marked path. This path can be seen throughout the climb and, although it is intermittent, it is very easy to find. To do so, follow the left bank of the intermittent Echaillon stream. Despite the lack of a path, the route is obvious: head north and, in good weather, the summit of Grand Galbert is always visible. Reach the ridge to the left of the summit and find a cairned path that leads to the summit.

(3) Descend via this path and follow the cairns. Pass through the Col du Treuil.

(4) Continue south-west, pass under the Beauregard ridge, and join the wide path that leads to the Barrière chalets.

(5) Then take the wide forest track that leads to the hamlet of Poursollet and the car park (S/E).

Notes

Regulations to be observed on Natura 2000 sites:
- no swimming,
- no camping or bivouacking (except in designated areas),
- fires prohibited,
- littering is prohibited,
- dogs must be kept on a leash.

No water on this route.
The Taillefer refuge is open in summer and is a good place to stop for a break.

Worth a visit

This is a long walk with little elevation gain (200 metres should be deducted from the advertised figure, bringing it down to 930 metres) but covering a long distance. It takes two hours to reach the Taillefer refuge from the car park, and another two hours to reach the summit. However, the walk is superb, with the crossing of the peat bogs and the view of the small lakes from the top reminiscent of Canada.
The Taillefer range and the views of the Ecrins, the Rousses and the Aiguilles d'Arves complete the picture.

Always be cautious and plan ahead when you're outdoors. Visorando and the author of this route cannot be held responsible for any accidents occurring on this route.

A beautiful hike accessible to all, with an overnight stay at the charming Taillefer refuge. Beautiful views of the unique peat bogs, lakes and surrounding peaks await you. There are many possible variations on a clear day, as the landscape is very open.

This route is mainly off-trail, and that's fine. It is important not to mark it or add more cairns as has been suggested: do you want this wild and intimate route to become as busy as Lac Fourchu? Definitely not! Don't change anything! Finally, a magnificent spot in the mountains that is accessible without too much walking, where you can hike alone all day long, with the added thrill of finding your own route, which is fairly easy here (when there's no fog, of course).
I did it over 10 years ago, and I did it again this weekend. No complaints, nothing should be changed. Those who don't know how to find their way off the trail should go elsewhere, there are plenty of choices, and please, leave us some uncrowded wilderness areas!

a magnificent route, a real change of scenery in the tundra of the lakes!
However, I took a more interesting route (in my opinion!). Shortly after Pas de l'Enviou, turn left, join the ridge, head towards two large cairns visible from afar, continue along the ridge above a sheepfold. This ridge converges with the bottom of the valley on the right that you have been following. Climb under the Pic de la Gravelle, which you will go around on the left. You will arrive at a pass between La Gravelle and Le Galbert. From there, climb up to the left onto the summit ridge of Le Galbert. The summit is on the right as you arrive! You will have a view over the plateau of lakes throughout this route! And you'll save nearly half an hour! On the descent after the Col du Treuil, head slightly to the left, zigzagging between peat bogs and lakes (you'll feel like you're in another world!) until you reach the valley visible from afar, where you'll rejoin the Chemin de la Barriere!

A very pleasant hike with beautiful scenery on the lake plateau and Taillefer.

The climb is fairly easy as it is very gradual.
Superb views over the entire Belledonne massif.

Hike done in reverse: some difficulty finding the "right" path uphill, but you can stroll along very leisurely, following the GPS track at a pace between 5 and 2 without any danger. You really can't miss the summit of Grand Galbert

Relatively few people for a Saturday, except at the end: many people climb up to Lac Fourchu to camp, and you have to admit that the setting is nice!

Almost alone in the world at the beginning of September.
Truly alone from Lac Fourchu onwards, with just a few marmots up above and that's it.
I agree with the previous comment, caught in the fog on the descent, it's not easy to find your way, especially when your phone isn't working, but otherwise it's just magnificent!
Thank you for the hike

Overcrowding at the Pourcelet car park. It looked like there had been a rave party the night before at Lac Fourchu..

So at the moment, it's probably best to go via Ornon to climb up to the Taillefer refuge (which seems to be abandoned, by the way).

In terms of the route, once you leave the refuge, the obvious path quickly disappears. We ended up following animal tracks rather than a proper trail. Perhaps the path is lower down towards the stream. Ultimately, it doesn't matter, as you can walk anywhere without risk and it's very easy to see where you need to go

In bad weather, it's especially important not to make a mistake on the descent. Stay as close as possible to the ridge line, then swing towards the hamlet at the Aiguille point. There are few or no tracks and no cairns. Don't veer too far to the left, otherwise you'll end up on the Lacs plateau.

A very beautiful hike that I did in trail mode and in conjunction with the ascent of Taillefer (see guidebook on the same website). Shortly after the Taillefer refuge, the trail disappears, as explained in the guidebook, and at that point you have to follow your instincts: I went straight up the slope to find myself on the ridge and thus missed the Infernet...
I can confirm that this hike should not be attempted in bad weather (I gave up once earlier in the season due to the risk of fog). Otherwise, there are no particular dangers...

Departure at 8:45 a.m., return at 5:30 p.m. Beautiful cold weather (yes, yes, ). A very beautiful introductory route for off-trail hiking, starting from the Taillefer refuge for about half of the walk. Not to be attempted in bad weather as visual landmarks can disappear in the fog (no signs, no paint markings and few cairns, the paths are intermittent).
From the end of the room, we did not follow the map. We quickly climbed to the right on very passable grassy slopes to the Infernet lakes. Picnic at the Infernet lakes. Then we bypassed the summit (100 metres above us... had we eaten too much?) to reach the rest of the route at the Chalvine peak (cairn) via a descent below the Grand Galbert. After the Col du Treuil, the paths are very discontinuous and finding the trail above the chalets at the barrier is a matter of guesswork (stay close to the Beauregard hillside).
Aesthetically, it is a truly beautiful walk with plenty of views of the surrounding mountains. It might be better to do it in the opposite direction, which we promised ourselves we would do soon.
Thanks to the author of the guidebook, it is one of the most beautiful hikes of the year!

Hello,
I left my Sony Rx 100 camera (in a grey bag) on the ground along the road just before the Lac du Poursollet car park. It contained photos from a three-day hike on the Taillefer and the Lac Fourchu plateau. I'm really gutted. If anyone has found it or has any idea where it might be or who might have found it, thank you very much for your help. :-(

We climbed up to Grand Galbert from the Grenonière car park (1,400 m), passing through Basse Montagne to the Taillefer refuge (2,050 m). We set off by climbing a little to the left and making a hairpin turn to climb up the ridge behind the refuge. We then arrived on a plateau, followed the paths left by sheep and found cairns that guided us to the Chalvine peak and the foot of Grand Galbert (as we climbed, we could see Mont Blanc), where we spotted a stony path leading up to the summit. We follow the ridge with a bird's eye view of the Romanche valley, which flows 1,800 metres below, and admire the bends of Alpe d'Huez, Chamrousse, Belledone, Pic de Bure and Vercors. For the return journey, in order to get to Lac Fourchu as quickly as possible, we descend the scree slope and turn right to descend through a multitude of small lakes, following cairns from time to time. We see the Grand Galbert sheepfold and arrive at a huge cairn planted on a rock. We descend on sight to the old GR near the Pas de l'Envious. We continue on this GR to Lake Fourchu. We return to the Pas de l'Envious and descend to La Jasse and Ornon. This walk took us 9.5 hours with breaks and we climbed 1,227 metres.
this magnificent panorama deserves to have cairns built close together.

Wonderful hike.
Well explained but the GR trail was a bit faded with time.
Arrival at the Taillefer lodge where we spent the night: Thierry, the lodge keeper, was very friendly and gave us a warm welcome.
Nice spot for a picnic by Lake Fourchu. We didn't go as far as Grand Galbert for fear of getting caught in the forecast storm.
Magnificent view from the lodge: view of the Taillefer on one side and view of Les 2 Alpes and other mountains.

Worth doing again and again
Accessible for families
