Description of the walk

Departure from the Poursollet car park.

(S/E) Take the 4x4 track at the end of this car park, which descends slightly at the beginning, and follow the signs for "La Barrière". This track passes partly through forest and partly through pastureland.

(1) When you reach the Barrière chalets, leave the track and take the path on the right that climbs towards the Plateau des Lacs (sign). This path follows a small stream and winds its way through a very open area of juniper and blueberry bushes.

(2) Ignore the shortcut on the right across the stream, which leads directly to Lac Canard, and continue straight ahead.

(3) At La Valette, cross two passages over a rock block. No particular difficulty in dry weather, but the area may be slippery in wet weather. Continue to reach the Pas de l'Envious.

(4) Stop to admire the view.
Then, there are two paths to choose from to reach the Plateau des Lacs (formerly Lac Fourchu!). Take the one that climbs up to a promontory overlooking Lac Fourchu.
After the promontory, descend to Lac Fourchu, go around it on the right and head for its south-western tip (closest to Taillefer).

(5) At the crossroads, ignore the path on the left that leads to Taillefer and turn right to begin the descent towards Poursollet. Be careful, this descent is quite steep and very stony (and therefore a little slippery)! Return to the car park where you started (S/E).

Waypoints

  1. S/E : km 0 - alt. 1,654 m - Car park - Lac du Poursollet
  2. 1 : km 3.57 - alt. 1,868 m - Chalets de la Barrière
  3. 2 : km 4.34 - alt. 1,960 m - Shortcut possible to Lac Canard
  4. 3 : km 4.68 - alt. 2,010 m - Passage over rocks
  5. 4 : km 5.72 - alt. 2,072 m - Pas de l'Envious
  6. 5 : km 7.93 - alt. 2,029 m - Start of the descent via the direct path
  7. S/E : km 10.08 - alt. 1,655 m - Poursollet car park

Notes

Regulations to be observed on Natura 2000 sites:
- swimming is prohibited,
- camping and bivouacking prohibited (except in designated areas),
- no fires,
- littering is prohibited,
- dogs must be kept on a leash.

On this route, the climb is certainly longer than the direct path between Poursollet and Lac Fourchu, but it is less steep and more pleasant as you walk through a very open environment. The return via the direct path is quicker but steeper!
Of course, you can also do it the other way round!

There are small streams everywhere, but given the presence of livestock, it would not be wise to drink the water. There are no drinking fountains along the route.

Alternative
(4) Take the path that descends and then turns right along Lac Noir.

Bring walking sticks for the rather rocky descent.

In September, you should also bring a blueberry picker and a plastic box!

Refreshments available on your return to Poursollet!

Worth a visit

At the Barrière chalets, view of Chamrousse on the other side of the Romanche valley.

At Pas de l'Envious, there is a wide-open panorama of the Oisans peaks, from the Grandes Rousses to the Aiguilles d'Arves.

Plenty of space around the lakes for children to play. Lac Fourchu is shallow (about 30 cm).

Once on the Plateau des Lacs, you can pick blueberries (in September), walk around the various lakes, dip your feet in the water or simply take a nap in the sun (after your picnic)!

Like many others, I did the route in the opposite direction because it's safer to climb steeply and then coast downhill. In any case, it's a sublime hike and I think it's one of the most comprehensive viewpoints in the region!
It's worth noting that this is a very popular hike, so I imagine it's best to avoid it during the summer.

A very beautiful walk with superb views. However, the descent is not very pleasant, as it is very stony on a narrow path and not very interesting. Next time, we will descend on the other side.

A sublime hike, although quite busy. We did it backwards: at the fork in the road just outside the car park, we took the path on the right towards Les Buvettes instead of the one towards Les Barrières. It's a steeper climb, but you can do it easily if you take it slowly. That way, we saved our knees for the descent, which would have been very difficult on that side as it's steep and rocky. The scenery is magnificent and we even saw a marmot at Lac Noir. The only downside was a veritable invasion of mosquitoes! We'd never seen anything like it! Remember to bring insect repellent. Many thanks to the hiker who posted this wonderful hike, which ranks among the top 10!

A wonderful hike today.
Strangely, there weren't many people around, as confirmed by the owner of the Taillefer refuge (go there, they're very friendly! And you'll be helping to maintain the pastoral environment by having a coffee or a slice of pâté, which is delicious!).
Plenty of stunning views, with a climb that seems tricky in places but is no particular problem. You just have to climb for a few dozen minutes.
Thanks to the hiker for their flawless description and this magnificent discovery.
Don't miss out on such natural beauty!

PS: there are a few sheepdogs, but they are well trained. They bark, but that's all.
There are mosquitoes before you reach the top at this time of year, so remember to bring repellent.

Thank you for this route, which we did backwards (the steep side is easier to climb than to descend). The landscape on the plateau is superb and very peaceful. We would like to come back and explore the plateau and its many lakes more thoroughly.

Combinations of two hikes: ascent via the barrier and descent via the plateau.
Spectacular views of the mountains.

A magnificent hike.
Luckily, VISORANDO advised us to go via "les barrières" on the way there. The hike is much more enjoyable and offers panoramic views that you don't get if you just climb directly from Lac du Poursolet to Lac Fourchu.
A pleasant climb through varied landscapes. Superb.

Fantastic easy little hike (slightly rocky descent requiring walking sticks)
The directions are perfect.
The scenery is magnificent on the plateau before and after the Pas de l'Envious, and the lakes are superb
The colours are also magnificent in autumn
I highly recommend it.

A very pleasant hike that can be done in half a day or, as we did today, by taking advantage of a short but beautiful autumn day.
After trying it out, I would tend to recommend doing it in reverse; the usual trail is steep and full of large and small stones that roll underfoot. I find it easier to walk this trail uphill than downhill, as it is well known that the same trail is steeper going down than going up, especially at the end of the hike.
Enjoy Lake Fourchu, then head to the Pas de l'Envious and take in the magnificent valley that leads to the Barrière chalets, accompanied by the gurgling of the stream flowing down on the left. After the chalets, you can easily reach the car park via a gently sloping forest road shaded by trees.
No, really, if I do this hike again, I'll do it in reverse.
