Le Grand-Bois in Vielsalm from Tinseubois

Start and finish at the chapel in Tinseubois, where there is a small car park. It is easy to get there via the hamlet of Poteau or via Blanchefontaine.
At the Ferme des Mauvaises, take the path to the right of the stone marker, then follow the meadow; you are on the former Belgian-Prussian border, which today separates the province of Liège from the province of Luxembourg.
After 1.1 km, a path on the right will take you to Dewulf Road, which you’ll need to cross to reach the Schmitz Cross 1.75 km further on.
If, by chance, you spot a beaver, please make sure you remain quiet.

Description of the walk

There is a small car park in front of the chapel.

(S/E) With your back to the chapel, head right then quickly turn left onto the road, heading north-east.

(1) Just past the barn, leave the tarmac road and take the stony track on the right. Then turn left and right.

(2) Join the path leading to the right of Poteau towards the Mauvaises Pierres farm.

(3) Just past the farm, take the path that goes to the right of the stone marker, then keep left to follow the meadow. Take a path on the right until you reach Dewulf Road.

(4) Cross it and continue straight ahead.
At this crossroads, if you feel like it, you can pop over to the left a few metres away to see if the Benoit cross is still standing.
Retrace your steps to continue the walk towards the Scmitz cross.

(6) Carry on straight ahead.

(7) Turn sharp right and go and see the beaver dams. If you want to shorten the walk a little, you can turn left towards the Raskin cross and the Blanchefontaine road.

(8) Cross the stream and turn left at the junction. At the road, turn right.

(9) A few metres past the forest house, you’ll be back at the chapel (S/E).

Worth a visit

You are near the hamlet of Poteau, which was the scene of a bloody battle in the early days of the Ardennes Offensive. A memorial has been erected at the site of the ambush.
