The boundary markers at Logbiermé

Lost in the woods, the old boundary markers demarcating the border between Belgium and Prussia still stand proudly there.

Description of the walk

Car park at the small park in Logbiermé.

(S/E) You’ll see the hiking sign on your right; follow the road until you reach the dirt track in front of No. 34.

(1) Turn left. Walk up through the meadows, ignoring the path on your left further up. Enter the forest and continue straight on at the crossroads. At the Fork in the road, turn right and carry on to the next crossroads.

(2) Turn right and walk along the main forest track for about 1 km until you reach a four-way junction.

(3) Turn left, pass the hamlet of Borne 105 and, at its foot, the Pas d’Âne, and walk for about 2 km along the main path, passing the hamlet of Borne 107 until you reach the hamlet of Borne 108.

(4) Turn left. The path curves in an S-shape and continues to the T-junction and the hamlet known as Borne 109.

(5) Turn left and follow the main path for about 1 km, passing the hamlet known as Borne 110 and the Abbé Schaff Cross. Go round the gate and walk to the multi-way junction.

(6) Take a sharp left-hand bend. Head uphill and enter the forest. Pass the hamlet of Croix Mafa.

(7) Stay on the main path for a further 700 m, passing the hamlet of Croix Thys and its crossroads, until you reach the next four-way junction.

(8) Turn right and walk to the crossroads you passed on the way there.

(2) Carry on straight ahead. Once back on a forest track, keep left. At the crossroads, go straight on. Leave the woods, walk along the meadows and head down to the road.

(1) Turn right and head back to the park (S/E).

Notes

Muddy in places
No water along the route
In freezing conditions, some sections may be difficult as streams cross the paths we use, turning them into veritable ice rinks across their entire width.
From October to December, please be aware of hunting dates; we’ll be using Promenade 12.

Border Markers: The Belgian-Prussian border markers, in accordance with the decisions of the Congress of Vienna (1815), mark the former border between the Kingdom of Belgium – which was still part of the United Kingdom of the Netherlands until 1830 – and the Kingdom of Prussia.

No Donkey: a mysterious stone, which legend says bears the hoofprint of the donkey that carried the infant Jesus during his flight into Egypt. Others see it as the hoofprint left by Saint Remacle’s donkey, when he and his master travelled the borders of the principality. The central hole, it is said, is always filled with water, even during the most severe droughts. Barren women ask the miraculous stone to grant their wish.

The trail is mainly in the woods, which are mostly made up of fir trees, ferns, some heather and deciduous trees that bring out the magnificent autumn colours.
Please note that at this time of year it is quite muddy and you will need to regularly leave the path and walk through the forest on the moss to avoid getting your feet wet.

A walk mainly through woods, a little muddy. You pass a private property (hunting grounds) where passage is tolerated outside hunting season (but there is a barrier).
You often have to take the less obvious route.
Try to follow the GPS track if possible.
When climbing Logbiermé, there is a large path on the left, but you must go straight ahead into the forest next to a ditch. Before marker 110, there is a tree blocking the road. Once you have passed marker 110, do not take the path, but continue straight ahead (walking route 1). At the end of the walk, take the same road. Be careful not to take the wrong path, as there are several.
And if you're in Logbiermé at the weekend, stop for a drink at the Gattes terrace. They have good beers and a splendid view.

A very interesting walk in an extremely quiet neighbourhood. I have known the area for over 50 years as an active walker and can already recommend this circular walk.
