Le Grand Bénare from Le Maïdo

There are several notable peaks on Réunion. Two of them rise above 3,000 metres: Gros Morne and Piton des Neiges. The third is none other than Grand Bénare. The latter is accessible from several points. The routes via Le Grand Bord and La Glacière are the easiest. It is advisable to take the outward route via Le Grand Bord to enjoy the views over Mafate before the clouds roll in. The summit offers a 360-degree view, and the return via La Glacière adds a touch of history.

Description of the walk

Park at the end of Route du Maïdo in the designated car park.

(S/E) Cross the car park and follow the concrete path towards the weather observatory. You will reach the junction with the Sentier du Grand Bord.

(1) Head up this path to the left. It is, however, quite inconspicuous: a GPS is useful. You’ll need strong calves as the stones and rocks won’t let up until the end of the hike. After a climb, you’ll reach a small summit with a statue of the Virgin Mary and a view of the Cirque de Mafate.

(2) Continue along the path before descending slightly and then climbing again. Shortly afterwards, ignore the descending paths to the right. Several junctions are not marked on the maps and paths criss-cross from here to the Grand Bénare: a GPS is strongly recommended as the markings are difficult to spot. Do not get too close to the edge of the cliff either, as there are numerous faults and the risk is real. You’ll reach a Fork in the road with a post.

(3) Leave the path that descends to the right and continue straight on. You will reach the “Grand Bord” signpost.

(4) Continue straight on towards the Grand Bénare. The vegetation becomes increasingly sparse, offering views of the west coast of Réunion and the island’s highest peaks. Continue to the second “Grand Bord” signpost.

(5) Stay along the cliff and tackle a short but steep climb before joining the Glacière path.

(6) Head straight on towards Grand Bénare. The climb is gentler but very stony. Then reach the antenna and turn left at the “Grand Bénare” signpost to reach the summit cross and enjoy a view of Mafate, Cilaos, Piton des Neiges, the plains and the volcano.

(7) Return to the Glacière crossroads via the same route.

(6) Turn left onto a path that remains just as stony before reaching a Fork in the road with the old Grand Bénare path.

(8) Continue to the right. Here too, numerous paths cut across the switchbacks: stay on the official path by following the white markings to the right, then take the switchbacks and keep to the left (the GPX track is useful). At the junction, keep left then left again to reach the Glacière site.

(9) Climb the steps, then head right and left towards the track: follow this to the post.

(10) Head straight on to the next Fork in the road.

(11) Stay on the track until you reach a gate.

(12) Take the tarmac road on the right and follow it all the way up to the junction from the outward journey.

(1) Continue towards the car park (S/E).

Notes

The hike is very technical with plenty of stones and rocks, particularly between (1) and (9) and slightly less so between (9) and (12): bring good walking shoes.

The entire walk is in open country: bring something to protect yourself from the sun.

There are several deep gullies between (2) and (7), and the drop-offs are particularly dangerous: stay on the official path.

A GPS is strongly recommended as the paths branch off in all directions between the (1) and the (9).

There is a shop selling drinks on the road before (S/E)

Worth a visit

- Maïdo viewpoint (S/E)
- Grand Bénare viewpoint (7)
- Various views of the Cirque de Mafate
- Caverne de la Glacière (9)

Breathtaking views over Mafate and then Cilaos; a fairly technical hike as you’ll be walking on scree for much of the way. Once you reach Grand Bénare, you’ll have a direct view of Piton des Neiges and Fournaises, if you’re lucky.
The return journey can be made either via the same route or via the Piton de la Glacière. An easier route but very monotonous, of little interest and not very scenic, a bit of a slog after 15km... plus in full sun!

The route is fairly easy to follow if you keep a close eye on the markings on the ground; it’s easy to stray off course, but you can easily find your way back to the original path.
The various viewpoints are exceptional. Before the clouds rolled in, we could even see the Piton de la Fournaise clearly.
This is a hike well worth doing, as you get a view of two cirques at the same time.
Don’t forget to set off early.

Superb hike as described, a few more difficult sections towards the end, fantastic views, the return via the ice house cave is easier but after passing the ice house it is very monotonous to get back to the car park

A magnificent hike with breathtaking views. We are always at a safe distance from the edge, which is reassuring if you suffer from vertigo! The route is well marked, but it's best to have a GPS device.
The hike is a bit technical because of the rocks along the way. The return via the glacier isn't interesting in terms of the view, but it's reassuring when the fog gradually rolls in.
It took us 7 hours with lots of stops to take photos.
