Le Galtz from Turckheim

La Galtz is an iconic peak located at the gateway to the Munster Valley. It is easily accessible from Trois-Épis. The climb from Turckheim requires more experience, but is not difficult. Two-thirds of the route is through forest. The return journey, arriving at the gates of Ammerschir, is entirely through vineyards, passing through two villages: Katzenthal and Niedermorschwihr. The area's heritage is also well represented, first in Turckheim, then in the other villages you pass through, as well as at the Christ the Redeemer statue, erected in memory of the First World War. From this statue of Christ at the summit of the Galtz, there is a magnificent view of both the mountains and the plains.

Description of the walk

Start the hike at the Place de la République car park (there is a market on Friday mornings).

No markings

(S/E) From the car park, enter the old town by taking the street on the left, then following the street on the right, under the gate. At the intersection, turn left onto Grand'Rue until you reach the gate at the end. Continue straight ahead until you reach Place de la Paix and the Turenne Monument.

Yellow rectangle signposting

(1) Continue straight ahead on Rue des Tuileries. Ignore an intersection and take the first path on the right. At the Y, near the houses, follow the path uphill to arrive near an oratory.

(2) Stay on the uphill path and ignore a wide path on the right. Continue straight ahead until you enter the woods. Pass a second oratory, leave a mountain bike trail on the right, then a more abandoned track on the left. Reach a T-junction on the left.

(3) Continue uphill straight ahead. Ignore the two paths on the right. The trail curves to the left on a gentle slope. Ignore an abandoned track on the right, as well as a second one. At the third track, head straight ahead to cut across a wide forest path. Then continue straight ahead towards the blockhouse.

(4) Continue along the path, still following the yellow rectangle.

(5) The trail joins a wide track, which you should take on the left before turning right onto a narrow path.

No markings

At the first crossroads, turn sharply right to join the road on the left. Follow this road up to the Roggenmoser Cross.

Yellow Triangle markings

(6) When you reach the cross, take the track that starts on the right, behind a barrier, towards Galtz and Rocher du Pfaffenrod. Continue to the first crossroads.

(7) Continue along the path that climbs to the left. At the first fork, turn right. Further on, take the path on the right, which leads to the viewpoint and the Pfaffenrod Rocks.

(8) After admiring the view, continue along the path, which begins to climb. Cross a track, then stay on the path on the right.

Blue disc markings

Cut across another track to reach the ridge. Once at the crossroads, go left, then right to discover the Galtz and its panoramic view.

(9) Then descend by the same route to the second crossroads. Continue straight ahead, downhill, towards Ammerschwihr. After a steep descent, you will cross a track.

(10) Go to the right. Further on, go right again, then repeat this twice to begin the descent. You will cross a track coming from the right.

(11) Keep to the left. At the Y-junction, turn right, then take a shortcut on the left and cut across a forest track. You will reach a fork.

(12) Continue along the path that descends on the other side of the track. Then cross two other tracks to reach the Croix Meyhir viewpoint, continuing straight ahead.

(13) Facing the viewpoint, take the path that starts on the left. Cut across a track, then leave the next one on the right, and arrive at another track.

No markings

(14) Continue on the right-hand track, going downhill. Ignore a crossroads. Quickly leave the forest and enter the vineyards. Once out of the forest, continue straight ahead until you can go no further, arriving at a chapel.

Yellow triangle markings

(15) Follow the road to the left, pass in front of the chapel, then first turn right then left to see the ruins of an old castle.

(16) Return to the chapel.

(15) Continue straight ahead until you reach the next crossroads.

No signposts

Continue along the path climbing opposite. At the end, descend to the left and rejoin the Way of St James at the oratory.

Yellow triangle signposting

(17) Turn right. Pass the water source on your right, then take the next path on the right, which quickly becomes a track. Ignore all intersections and stay on the same level until you reach Katzenthal.

No markings

(18) Continue straight ahead on Chemin du Riesling and turn right. Keep left twice to continue along the path to Grand Rue. Go up this street, then quickly turn left onto Impasse des Porteurs. At the end, turn right onto Rue des Trois-Épis and follow it to the first track on the left.

Yellow triangle markings

(19) Take this track, then continue on the first track on the left. Pass in front of a reservoir. At the road, descend to the left. At the first crossroads, turn right onto Rue du Vignoble, then go left towards the car park.

No markings

At the car park, go up Rue des Trois Épis on the right, leave Rue des Bruyères on the left, then take the next passage on the left to reach Saint-Gall Church.

(20) Go around the church on the right. Then go down Rue de Turckheim to the first crossroads after the church.

Yellow triangle signpost

Turn right at a right angle. Continue straight ahead until you reach the "Col de Brand".

(21) Head straight ahead on the path that descends to the right of the road. You will rejoin the road further down.

No markings

First turn left then right onto a grassy path. You will rejoin a track, which you should follow downhill to Route de Niedermorschir. Go down this street on the left until you reach Porte de Brand.

(22) Go under the gate, then turn left onto Rue Grenouillère until you see the church on your right. Head towards the church and, at the square between the church and the town hall, go down to the left to go around the town hall. Turn left onto Rue du Conseil. When you reach the path you took on the way there, continue straight ahead, then return to the car park via the same route (S/E).
