Le Colomby de Gex

From the Col de la Faucille, a beautiful hike to one of the highest peaks in the Jura. Superb views of the Alps and Mont Blanc.

Description of the walk

Start near the ski lift ticket offices (Montrond Cable Car).

The route is very well signposted in purple up to the summit of Grand Montrond.

(S/E) Head west and go round the lower cable car station on the right. Pass in front of the zip line start point and under the Val Mijoux chairlift line. Follow the snow-covered Maréchaude road for about 500 m.

(1) Leave the road and take a well-marked path on the left that climbs into the forest. Climb and follow this marked path until you emerge from the forest at a ski run.

(2) Cross the piste upstream of the ski tunnel and pass under the Gélinottes ski lift line. Turn right onto the Montrond road.

(3) After about 400 m, leave the road and climb slightly to the left, above it.

(4) Pass above the Crozat chalet and continue straight on.

(5) Turn left and head up towards Montrond. Head for a small pass on your right, between Montrond (to the north) and Grand Montrond (to the south).

(6) At the pass, turn left and climb to the summit of Montrond.

(7) Retrace your steps.

(6) Back at the unnamed pass, follow theGR®9"Balcon du Léman" southwards and you will soon reach the summit of Grand Montrond.

(8) Continue south, following the ridge line but keeping well clear of the cornices (which could give way under your feet). If there is a lack of snow, pass below the route marked on the map.

(9) Leave the ridge line and theGR®9to descend to the right into the large, snow-covered valley.

(10) Head south and climb towards the Colomby de Gex. The risk of avalanches is virtually nil. This will take you to the summit of the Colomby (exceptional views).

(11) Descend via the same route in the opposite direction.

(10) Continue due north and head towards the Chalet de la Chenaillette, which is clearly visible.

(12) Continue north-north-east, maintaining the same altitude and avoiding the forest. This will take you to a fork in the path taken on the way up.

(5) Descend via the reverse route of the ascent back to the starting point (S/E).

We followed the trail to the great Mont Rond. Then it was deserted. The weather forecast was exactly what we experienced.
We lost track of the snowshoes at the end of the descent, but that was probably due to our own carelessness. We finally found them again!

Undoubtedly the most beautiful hike of the week. A very quiet route beyond the Grand Montrond. From there, the path follows the ridge to point 9, offering extraordinary views of Lake Geneva and the Mont Blanc massif. The climb up to Colomby de Gex poses no particular problems. For the return journey, the Chalet de la Chenaillette provides a clear landmark; however, from this point back to point 5, we navigated using GPS. There were no tracks in the snow or markings. For those unfamiliar with the area, I would say a GPS is essential. Furthermore, we felt the estimated time was underestimated, despite our experience of mountain hiking, and even though we lost a lot of time with the GPS waypoints. Don’t hesitate to allow at least an extra hour.

A somewhat challenging hike due to the elevation gain, which is covered almost in one go up to the highest point of the route, and the distance involved. The route to Colomby is clear, but from there onwards, you have to navigate by sight until you reach the chalet, which is clearly visible; after that, it becomes less obvious, especially when snowshoeing: the GPS track is a useful aid.
This hike is popular as far as Grand Montrond, but much less so up to Colomby, which requires more experience to reach. The view is well worth the effort.

A wonderful hike with stunning views of the Alpine peaks and Lake Geneva.
We got a bit lost on the way back after the Chalet de la Chenillette (I’m not sure of the exact name…), but the main thing is to avoid going into the forest (stay well above it) to get back onto the path.

Hello c.oriot, and thank you for sharing your experience.

Of course, the Colomby de Gex is not the highest peak in the Jura (see the IGN map at 1:25,000). It is one of the highest peaks (correction made in the introduction).

Hello, we did a snowshoe hike, but only managed to follow the trail partway to the Chalet du Névy due to very strong winds on the ridge. It’s a lovely path (though very busy) up to the Grand Montrond, after which you have to break your own trail. There isn’t really a specific route for snowshoes: you can go wherever you like.
Incidentally, it seems that the Colomby de Gex is not the highest peak in the Jura, but the third highest according to Wikipedia:
1,720 m: Crêt de la Neige (Ain)
1,718 m: Le Reculet (Ain)
1,688 m: Colomby de Gex (Ain)
