Departure from La Vattay station.
(S/E) After purchasing the Nordic Pass (fee) to access the site, you can put on your snowshoes and head to the starting area for the snowshoe and cross-country ski trails to the checkpoint. Then you enter the forest on a very wide path that has been mechanically groomed. You start with a small hill to warm up your legs before descending to the plateau. Once out in the open, you can enjoy a magnificent view of the La Vattay Nordic area. Continue along the groomed trail.
(1) Just when you start to get tired of walking on a groomed trail, you finally leave it and turn right into an open field. Early in the morning, if you are lucky enough to have had snow the day before or during the night, you can enjoy making your own tracks, as no motorised vehicles have passed through here. But there is no risk of getting lost, as purple markers are placed every 20 metres on average. You walk close to the cross-country ski trails, on a gently sloping plateau, which makes for easy going.
(2) At the intersection, you continue straight ahead, anticipating the slope that will become steeper and steeper towards the summit. There is then about 90 metres of elevation gain to climb over 1.3 km to enjoy a magnificent view of Lake Geneva, the Alps and Mont Blanc.
(3) Take a break to admire the view before descending the same path to the previous junction where the slope becomes gentler.
(2) This time, turn right and head towards "Retour vers La Vattay" (Return to La Vattay). You will occasionally come across cross-country ski trails, which you should cross with caution so as not to disturb the skiers.
(4) At the intersection, turn right to walk along the edge of the plateau, at the edge of the forest.
(5) You will then rejoin the outward trail, which leads you gently towards the finish at La Vattay after one last climb (S/E).
