The Estaubé Circus

This easy hike leads to the foot of the Cirque d'Estaubé. Although less famous than its neighbour Gavarnie, the Cirque d'Estaubé is a magnificent sight, with many waterfalls. Great picnic opportunities in a superb mountain setting.

Description of the walk

Start from the Lac des Gloriettes car park. At the top of Gèdre, after the church, turn right onto the road leading to Gavarnie and take the D922 towards Lac des Gloriettes / Le Maillet. After around 4km, turn right onto the D176, which leads up to the lake.

(S/E) From the car park, head north-west. Take the dam that closes off the lake. Follow the track to the left, ignoring a path that rises to the right. At the north end of the lake, turn left and follow the left bank of the lake. On the opposite bank, note the mouth of the tunnel from which water from the Aguila flows, collected a few kilometres to the east at the foot of the Soum des Salettes and channelled here. After passing the lake, reach a crossroads (footbridge on the left).

(1) Ignore the footbridge and continue south along the Gave d'Estaubé on your left. Cross a sort of gorge, with the Montagne de Larrue on your right and the Montagne de Chourrugue on your left.

(2) Near a bend in the river and at the foot of an escarpment on the right, the path splits in two. Take the left-hand path, which stays close to the river (the better-traced right-hand path gradually moves away from the river and rises towards Hourquette d'Alans). Cross the Pont d'Estaubé and walk past the hut of the same name.

(3) Stay on the right bank of the river and walk slowly up the valley. The Cirque d'Estaubé rises up to the south. Continue as far as the Cascade du Pla d'Ailhet, beyond which you cannot continue.

(4) The descent takes the same route as the outward journey, but in the opposite direction to the Lac des Gloriettes car park (S/E).

Practical information

Although not particularly difficult, this walk does require good footwear.

Bring plenty of water.

Warning:
The hike starts outside the Pyrenees National Park but enters it at the point (2). You must therefore comply with the regulations in force. In particular, dogs are prohibited.

A useful 1:25,000 scale map (at least the one that accompanies this description).

Hiked twice by the author, first on 14 June 1998 in dense fog, then on 16 June 1998.

Variation via the right bank of the lake (suggested by visitor MCTOUL):
At the start, in the car park, turn your back on the dam and take the path heading south-east, signposted "Cirque d'Estaubé lui aussi". Follow the Sentier de Découverte, high above the lake. At a crossroads, turn right and head back down towards the Gave d'Estaubé above the lake. Cross the river on a footbridge and rejoin the main route at the point (1).
In the morning, this option allows you to stay in the shade for the first half-hour of the walk. It can, of course, be taken in the opposite direction on the return journey.

In the nearby area

- The impressive scenery of the Cirque d'Estaubé.
- Beautiful mountain setting, numerous waterfalls.
- Possibility of spotting marmots and isards.

The car park fills up quite quickly.
Easy, bucolic hike with little shade.
Much more crowded up to the hut.
The colours are magnificent, the water and vegetation today.

A very nice walk, with a good two hours of gentle walking on the way out and two short hours on the way back. Thanks for the description and the perfect IGN map.

Superb cirque. Easy family hike. The river and waterfall help to keep out the heat.

A lovely easy hike with little change in altitude. You have to go all the way to the bottom of the cirque to see the waterfall. The car park at the start fills up quickly, so it's best to arrive early. Much less busy than Gavarnie or Troumouse. Many marmots.

Lovely walk in a cirque that's very easy to get to. Very little change in altitude
The car park at the Lac des Gloriettes quickly reaches saturation point, so be sure to arrive early.

Lovely walk in this little-known cirque. Not many people on the way and no one beyond the hut.
The only downside is that access is not easy, and the last few kilometres are very narrow and steep. Fortunately, we got there early and the small car park at the dam was not full.

Daytime tour in the middle of July. Rather family-oriented. Easy going. Well signposted. Very pleasant. Not too crowded. 2 sections. Part 1 up to the hut and part 2 continues up to the waterfall, which is less popular and where you can see the marmots.

Hello. We really enjoyed this easy route, which allowed us to admire the marmots, the bearded vultures in the distance, the blue butterflies and many herds of cattle... Once you arrive in the cirque, don't hesitate to go to the very bottom to find the waterfall hidden between the rocks. It's well worth a look, and a nice reward after this beautiful route.
At the start, we arrived at the car park just before 8am, and there were still plenty of places. The route wasn't very busy at that time of day. We passed a few more families on our way back at around midday, but it wasn't too bad. Families don't go much further than the Cabane (halfway along the route). Parking had become more anarchic by mid-day.
And the little summer refreshment bar overlooking the lake is a very pleasant place to finish!

Superb hike with stunning scenery.
A good idea to start early, both because of the heat, as the route has no shady areas, and because the car park fills up quickly.
No difficulties on the route.

Very busy walk from 11:00 am, so don't be afraid to get up early.
Very friendly shepherds who talk happily about their job.
Superb views of the lake from the discovery trail.

Walk completed on 10 July 2023. The Estaubé circus is always a pleasant place and easy to do with children.
The only problem now is overcrowding. There are people everywhere, in every corner. Starting with the car park and the access road, where it's a real mess.
And what can you say about people slathered in sun cream who swim in the torrent, or those who take the Pla d'Ailhet waterfall basin for Paris beach, it's all getting out of hand.
At this rate, I don't think much of the Cirque d'Estaubé ecosystem, unfortunately.
It's a beautiful spot, but one to be avoided in the summer and on long spring weekends if you want to find some semblance of peace and quiet.
It's a pity that the photos don't show how busy it really is in summer.
