The Hourquette d'Alans

This ‘hourquette’, defined by Wikipedia as a common name in Pyrenean toponymy referring to passes shaped like a fork, separates the two cirques of Estaubé and Gavarnie. The round-trip route through the Cirque d’Estaubé offers a remarkable view of it.

Description of the walk

On leaving Gèdre, heading towards Gavarnie, turn left onto the Héas road. At the junction by the Gloriettes dam, turn left and park in the large car park by the dam.

(S/E) Take the path on the left, cross the dam and walk around the lake along its left bank. Continue until you reach the footbridge on the botanical trail.

(1) Do not cross, but continue straight on to reach the Pont d'Estaubé junction on almost level ground.

(2) Stay on the left-bank path and reach the mountain pasture a few steps further on.

(3) Continue straight ahead and then tackle a short climb to pass close to the Cabane de Labassa. Cross several streams before reaching the Labassa stream.

(4) You will then begin a series of tight hairpin bends through the mountain pasture, before reaching a stony area and the junction with the path leading to the Brèche de Turquerouye.

(5) Keep to the right on the path and complete the ascent of the Hourquette d’Alans via a series of hairpin bends.

(6) Take the same path down to the Estaubé mountain pasture.

(3) Turn slightly right to enjoy the grassy area and reach the Pont d'Estaubé. Then head to the crossroads.

(2) Follow the same route back to easily return to the car park (S/E).

A splendid arrival at the Gloriettes car park, bearing in mind that the approach involves narrow roads with limited visibility (so please take care).
This cirque lies between the magnificent Troumouse cirque and the exceptional Gavarnie cirque, but they aren’t visible as they’re too far away.
Actually, I was planning to go to Lac Marboré, but the Tuquerouye chimney is full of snow in early July, right from the start of the climb! With gradients of up to 45%. So I resign myself to turning back. A shame – I would have liked to have gone.
Actually, the chimney... you can see it from below and from a distance, and you can clearly see there’s a massive amount of snow :-o
So I head towards the Hourquette d’Alans, which is opposite and offers a magnificent panorama from the top.
I don’t regret it. After descending a hundred metres or so, you can easily spot the Brèche de Roland
Another must-see!

Highlights of the hike:
- Alt. 1656 m - Lac des Gloriettes
- Alt. 1,877 m - Cabane de Labassa (in the distance)
- Alt. 2,427 m - Small pass of Tuquerouye
- Alt. 2,439 m - Hourquette d'Alans
- Brèche de Roland

Completion of the single-arch dam in 1952. Length 136 m and height 43 m.
Lake surface area: 13.5 hectares

Please note: it’s best to avoid this hike in hot weather, as it’s a long walk and you’ll be exposed to the sun the whole way, with a fairly steep slope towards the end. That said, the view is still magnificent.

A lovely walk through a stunning cirque, even though the weather wasn't on our side.

Hello,
A really lovely hike that’s a must in good weather; I thoroughly enjoyed it and saw marmots just 10 metres away – magnificent – and once at the top of the ‘Hourquette d’Alans’, there was a magnificent view over the Gavarnie Valley and the Brèche de Roland.
Great.
