The path to the Pont des Mascarades

A short, easy walk starting from the small Gers village of Pujaudran, in its beautiful countryside, around charming little woods. Lovely views of the Pyrenees and the Toulouse metropolitan area, which is just a few kilometres away.

Description of the walk

Park in the car park behind the church.

(S/E) Walk round the church to reach Avenue de Capoul and follow it to the left. Pass the town hall, a tobacconist’s and then the cemetery. The right-hand side of the road is safe.

(1) After passing the sign marking the village exit, take the path on the right which goes under the main road and then follows the edge of a wood, making a first turn to the left.

(2) Turn right, cross the small Mascarades bridge and head right, following the stream upstream before turning left towards the woods. Follow the edge of the woods to the junction. Lovely view over the Toulouse plain.

(3) Turn right onto the path that crosses the woods, following an underground gas pipe. Follow this path to a small gate, just before the junction with a small road.

(4) Continue to the right along the small road which climbs slightly and then passes in front of a riding school. In fine weather, there is a lovely view of the Pyrenees. You will reach a crossroads with a mill visible opposite.

(5) Turn right without going all the way to the mill. Follow the small road as it descends, passing in front of Lartus Castle, then skirting and passing under the main road.

(6) At the sewage treatment plant, take the path on the left which climbs through the woods. At the junction with another path, stay on the left-hand path and you’ll reach a tarmac section.

(7) Turn right onto Chemin du Midi and you’ll reach a playground.

(8) Take the small steps on the left and follow the path that passes above a tennis court. At the road, turn right then continue straight ahead around the bend to reach the town hall directly. Come out onto Avenue de Capoul, turn left then go round the church to reach the starting car park (S/E).

A pleasant walk, with a few downsides: in winter, some sections are very muddy near the woods. The nearby RN124 is barely noticeable once you’re on the other side of the hill; otherwise, you can hear it clearly and cross it twice via small tunnels.
We liked: the unobstructed view from the heights of Pujaudran, a (private) mill visible from the route, and some lovely stretches of countryside.

A signposted route starting from Pujaudran.
The roadside section from the start (and up to point 1) is not pleasant at all as vehicles drive fast, and there’s barely any room for pedestrians in the grass… so reaching the path is a welcome relief and reassuring!
A bit of a struggle before point 3 (at the top of the field) as there must have been a major logging operation underway and there were felled tree trunks on the route... no signposting and an obstacle course (trunks + mud)
After point 3 and all the way back to Pujaudran, the return journey is via paths and small roads.
Moderate interest as the four-lane road is often in view and the views are limited
Make sure you have the app to help you find your way along the route as there are no markings at the logging site

A pleasant walk in fine weather. A lovely view of the Toulouse plain with the Montagne Noire in the background.
Very limited view of the Pyrenees (don’t go there for that). The only downsides: the unsecured Avenue de Toulouse once you’ve left Pujaudran, the noise from the N124, and the tunnel underneath which was flooded due to recent rain.
Takes 1½ hours at a normal walking pace.

A short, very pleasant walk with no difficult sections, covering just under 8 km, following a well-marked path through woods and fields. Best done in dry weather, as some sections along the edge of fields can be muddy after heavy rain.

An excellent walk, with a strong southerly wind today. Lovely views of Toulouse. Very few people around.

It was a bit muddy that day, even though it hadn’t rained for a few days.
No view of the Pyrenees today.
And you can often hear the noise of cars on the nearby motorway.
It must be said that the Autan wind was blowing that day.
A shame, as it’s a varied walk.
