Le Champ de Mars - on the heights of Antraigues-sur-Volane

"Champ" is a deformation of "Cham": a rocky, bare plateau.
From this plateau, the Monts d'Ardèche appear as if shaped by geological forces, at the centre of a gigantic amphitheatre formed by the Cévennes, the volcanoes of Auvergne, the Vercors and the Alps. Monumental landmarks in the history of the Earth. A grandiose scene where the presence of man seems very discreet, yet his mark is clearly there, engraved in the landscape. Wild valleys with crystal-clear waters.

Description of the walk

Head to Le Mas, a small hamlet north of Antraigues-sur-Volane. Park before the bridge, on the right (space for 2 or 3 cars). Avoid parking in the hamlet if possible.

(S/E) Cross the bridge over Le Mas and enter the hamlet.

(1) Between the houses, turn left (signposted "le Mazoyer") to take a very pleasant, clear path heading north. Follow the stream to the hamlet of Le Mazoyer.

(2) At the entrance to the hamlet, climb steeply to the right between a few houses to reach a track; cross it and take the path that climbs gently (at the beginning) under the chestnut trees. You are now leaving civilisation behind... Follow the Lavanches stream.
The climb, often in the shade and sometimes steep, leaves the chestnut grove for a beautiful beech forest. Follow the well-marked yellow signs.

(3) Cross the stream and immediately afterwards, turn right heading south before continuing on a steep climb towards the north-east.

(4) After a steep climb to the edge of the Ardèche plateau, you will come to a small track on the left. Gradually, it turns into a proper track suitable for vehicles. About 200 metres further on, at a junction, keep to the left.

(5) Be very careful at this point, as it is easy to continue straight ahead. On a slight descent, turn right at a right angle, heading east onto a steeply ascending path under the canopy of majestic beech trees. You will reach an old Roman road.

(6) Junction with theGRP® Haute Cévenne d'Ardèche (yellow and red markings). Follow this beautiful path to the left, heading due north. Magnificent views to the south, over the Mas valley, Antraigues-sur-Volane and the whole of the Basse Ardèche.

(7) Leave theGRP® and turn right (due east) onto the path leading to the highest point, the Champ de Mars. Due to recent logging, the path is a little unclear at the start. It leads you to the north of this summit; at a wooden post, climb to the right to reach the orientation table.

(8) Champ de Mars: 1,343 m. You are now in the heart of the amphitheatre! This is the highest point of the hike.
Retrace your steps.

(7) Take theGRP® trail on the right. 500 m further on, at an intersection, leave it towards Mézilhac and take the track on the left. After going around the Knoll de Pradou, the descent begins. Stay on this main track for several kilometres. After a sharp hairpin bend to the right, you will reach a hiking post.

(9) Take the steeply descending path on the left. Follow the Ruisseau le Fédou stream downhill. There are several fords before you reach a wide track.

(10) Turn left for about 20 metres and then immediately take the path on the right, which descends under the vegetation. There are more fords to cross before you reach civilisation, namely Le Mazoyer.

(11) Overlooking the hamlet, you will come to a very small road, which you should take to the right. It goes around a few gardens before returning below the hamlet.

(2) Take the path on the right, which descends slightly and runs alongside the Ruisseau du Mas stream to the start/finish point (S/E).

Quite long and relatively difficult, but what a splendid view from the top towards the orientation table on the massif, and a well-marked trail overall... car park at Le Mas near the bridge (close friends live there!!!).

Carried out on a beautiful day, it can be classified as difficult due to its length, beautiful wild areas and lack of visitors.

A fabulous hike, dominated by water, with beautiful streams and mini waterfalls, but really not easy to cross at this time of year, given the flow. We're in wild, almost mountainous terrain, I love it!
The GPS did help us avoid getting too lost, but even with it, it's not always easy on this route, which isn't always well marked. It's breathtaking on the Champ de Mars! The weather wasn't clear enough for the view suggested by the orientation tables, so we'll be back (my husband didn't cross...). Thank you so much for this hike!

Superb hike, wild (didn't encounter a single soul along the way), shaded for most of the route as it is in the forest. The two hamlets are worth seeing. Picnic break recommended at the summit (point 8).

Be careful, as the paths are narrow and steep, sometimes difficult on dry ground — therefore not recommended on wet ground. Wear good shoes.

Many thanks to the author for providing such detailed information about the route. I would like to add the following points, in case they are helpful:

- Point 2: when you reach the beech forest, the "path" (barely visible) climbs steeply to the left; keep a close eye out for the markings as it is easy to lose them and end up deep in the forest.

- Point 5: the path in question is just after the logging site.

- Point 7: be careful, it is easy to miss the path to the summit because another logging site blocks its start; you will therefore have to improvise — the field is indeed the mound on the right of the Roman road.

- Point 10: the path that descends into the vegetation is 150 metres away rather than the "20 metres" indicated.

Hello,
A lovely hike in the late July heat.
The first part was shaded for the entire climb, with a lovely surprise in the form of the Gallo-Roman road and a beautiful view from the Champ de Mars.
The return journey was along a forest road for (too) many kilometres.
The trails are well marked, and the hike description is very precise.
Be sure to bring plenty of water, especially in the sun...

Thanks to the author for the information about the hike.

Enjoy your walk!

Hello everyone
Autumn colours are beautiful at this time of year, but be careful because there are leaves to tread on. At first it was great fun, but then, especially on the way down, it became very dangerous, so hikers beware. Otherwise, it was a very pleasant hike despite the north wind.
