The Camí Ramader, the Refuge de la Mouline from Évol

From Évol, a beautiful circular hike via the Camí Ramader, to discover the landscape and the mountain space dedicated to pastoralism. The Ribera d'Évol valley is a mid-mountain area where man has tamed the steep slopes by building fetges (terraces) to prevent erosion and to grow some cereals. These large structures were built using locally available materials and blend perfectly into the landscape.
On the way back, there is a short track between (11) and (12) and between (15) and (16).

Description of the walk

From Perpignan, head towards Andorra on the dual carriageway, passing Prades and Villefranche-de-Conflent. Drive through Olette, then opposite the old petrol station, turn right onto the D4 towards the pretty hamlet of Évol. Drive through it and you will soon find a large car park on the left-hand side of the road leading to Thuir d'Évol.

(S/E) With your back to the car park, turn left and go up the D4 to a fork in the road.

(1) Turn left and continue along the D4 for about 200 metres until you reach another fork in the road.

(2) Turn left again at this point onto the small road. After 200 m, turn left to cross the road bridge over the Ribera d'Évol.

(3) At the end of the bridge, turn right onto a path on the right bank of the Évol river. Pass some pretty, partly restored traditional houses and you will come to a fork in the path. Turn right to cross the wooden footbridge over the Ribera d'Évol.

White and yellow markings.

(4) Turn left and walk up the left bank of the Ribera d'Évol. Simply follow this magnificent Camí Ramader (cattle track - transhumance path), which climbs very gradually.

(5) Cross the Pont de la Llosa bridge. Continue along the right bank.

(6) Cross the Pont de Font Llebeja or Pont de Bège bridge to continue on the left bank.
At the crossroads, continue along the left bank. Pass an old slate quarry opposite, at Roc dels Moros.

(7) Take the Pont de les Agulles (Agouilles Bridge) and continue again along the right bank. You will come to a second crossroads near the Ccortal d'en Broch (sheepfold). Cross the clearing and climb up into the forest heading north.

(8) You will arrive at an open area. Cross a pretty wooden footbridge and follow the left bank to the Refuge de la Mouline (la Molina), arriving at a track suitable for vehicles.

(9) The refuge is very damp. The area is open and ideal for a well-deserved break.
Turn around and walk back about 30 metres until you see a signpost on your left.

(10) Head left uphill into the forest. After a pleasant climb, you will reach a track.

(11) Follow it to the right. Enjoy the beautiful scenery. After about 2.5 km, in a wide left-hand bend, leave the track at the cairns on the right-hand side of the track.

(12) Descend to the right towards a sparse forest, following the numerous cairns. There are very few yellow and white markings.

(13) After descending 50 m southwards, turn right and head horizontally towards Cortal Lluynà, which is not visible from the path. This is a beautiful spot for another restorative break.
Higher up, to the north-west, numerous ruins of sheepfolds still stand, bearing witness to this pastoral activity.
Return to the partially marked and cairned path and continue down this beautiful path in good condition, crossed by numerous springs. After a very long descent, you will reach an old dry canal.

(14) Cross it and continue descending southwards. Pass the ruins of Château d'Évol (no visits or exploration allowed). You will come to a track suitable for vehicles.

(15) Follow it to the left for about a hundred metres until you reach a left-hand bend.

(16) Leave the track and turn right towards the Chapel of Sant Estève.
Information board. Beautiful scenery.
Continue downhill and return to the fork you passed on the way up.

(1) Turn left, cross the road bridge and continue a little further to the car park at (S/E).

Shelters: Refuge de la Mouline (9), Cortal de Llunyà (13).
Plenty of water, but it needs to be filtered or purified. Tap opposite the car park.

Hike without any particular difficulty. The climb is very pleasant and steady.
During the group hike on 5 May 2022, all the bridges and footbridges were in perfect condition.

Great hike to do in summer, shaded climb to the refuge where you follow the river. Perfect with dogs, who can cool off. Well marked, except for a little on the descent, but with the route marked out it's easy to find your way. Beautiful views on the descent.

A very pleasant hike with no technical difficulties. A steady climb with plenty of shade. The sound of the stream along the way is a real bonus! We stopped at the pla, in front of the dilapidated Mouline refuge. Above, we spent some time chatting with the cowherd in front of his refuge. He will be watching over his herd there for six months. Then we resumed the circular route, climbing through a pine forest to the track, which we left to descend straight down to Evol. Steep but no problem, we had time to admire the landscape! We discovered the castle below, a view that is rarely seen. A hike worth doing!

A very beautiful hike, with a steady, gentle climb. Very pleasant in spring, but certainly also in summer, as the entire climb is through the forest, and in autumn for the colours of the forest. 16 km round trip and 900 m elevation gain if you do the recommended circular, rather than a return trip to the refuge. The descent is a little long but offers beautiful panoramic views, particularly of Canigou with a view of EVOL and its castle at the end!

A very beautiful hike. Pleasant paths. No particular difficulties, except for the distance, with a steady, shaded climb along a pretty pastoral path. The winding descent is concentrated in the last 3 km without being too steep (landmark 12, when you leave the track). The markings are not very visible in this last section, but the route is made easier by small cairns. Beautiful views both on the way up and down. Worth doing again in May and October.

We were delighted to follow this Camin Ramader route, which is actually a route created by the French Hiking Federation of the Eastern Pyrenees...

Contrary to previous comments, the circular loop is very interesting. The climb through the magical woods and the descent offer a panoramic view of the surrounding peaks and the village.

Despite the significant elevation gain, the route is easy to follow as the ascent and descent are steady.

A magnificent route to the refuge, where you follow a stream and cross pretty bridges, but then there is a long stretch of path in full sun and a very difficult descent to Èvol due to an unmaintained and poorly marked path. A shame... In my opinion, it's best to do a round trip, especially if you have a dog like me.

Nothing to say about the description, which is very well done.
but in my opinion, the hike would be more enjoyable as a round trip because the descent described has the advantage of forming a circular loop but is much less beautiful than along the river.
