Le Brûlat - a peaceful route in the heart of the Beausset basin

We have been using the small road between Le Brûlat and Sainte-Anne du Castellet for some time and wanted to explore the surrounding area. This modest walk allowed us to discover charming countryside planted with vines and olive trees, where absolute calm reigns. Please note that the entire route is on paved roads, as there are no accessible footpaths or tracks, but the small roads are very pleasant and not very busy. A getaway in a pretty plain surrounded by hills.

Description of the walk

In Le Beausset, simply head towards "Le Brûlat" and park in the village.
You can park in the tree-lined square with boules courts, which can be reached via the street opposite the "Simone" bakery at the northern exit of the village.

(S/E) Go to the main street, to a shop selling regional products and local fruit and vegetables, housed in a beautiful building with a large arched doorway framed by beautiful cut stone.

(1) Almost opposite the shop, take a narrow lane about 1.5 metres wide that heads east. The lane widens as it emerges behind the houses on the street and, after 200 metres, turns right at a right angle. Continue south until you reach Chemin de la Massoque, which you take on the left.

This road passes in front of the cemetery and curves to the right, crossing vineyards, before joining a north-south road opposite the large gate of a beautiful property.

(2) Turn left onto Chemin de la Fontaine de Cugens in a pine forest, heading north (signposted "Font de Cugens").

(3) Pass in front of the Cugens fountain, marked by a masonry building housing the water intake, a well and a wash house, on the left side of the road. The old fountain itself is located in an excavation not far from the well.

Continue north and, at elevation 160, pass Chemin de Valdarray on your left, then, further on, pass Chemin du Jas de Clair on your right, continuing north on Chemin de la Roche de Saule.

At the top of the last hill, leave Chemin du Pin Vert on your left and take Chemin de Pipette on your right, which descends towards a villa flanked by several large pine trees. Turn left and, at the end of an uphill stretch, left again.

(4) At this point, on an east-west ridge, the road follows the route of a gas pipeline, soon passing one of its relay stations.

(5) The road, which ran parallel to the Ragle stream, joins its bed in front of the entrance to the Oliveraie estate. The stream then runs to the left of the road.

(6) At the junction with Chemin du Matelas, the stream continues towards Sainte-Anne du Castellet. Continue straight ahead on a slight incline and you will soon cross Chemin du Pin Vert. You are now on Chemin de la Suffrène, which you will follow to Brûlat, after passing near the Suffrène estate and through the Brûlade district (S/E).

Notes

Walk taken in April 2022, in rainy weather.

I would like to emphasise that the entire route is on paved roads. It is therefore not suitable for those who prefer trails or who dislike tarmac. However, due to its gentle gradient, it can be enjoyed by and/or with wheelchair users, elderly people or anyone who simply wants to take a pleasant walk, alone, with family or friends.

Worth a visit

The main attraction of this walk is discovering the surroundings of the Beausset basin, its expanses of Bandol vineyards, its olive groves and pine forests, its scattered dwellings, its Olympian calm and its setting of rolling hills.

A pleasant hike in a very Provençal setting.
All tarmac, but you are warned... Little traffic.
The landscape is certainly more colourful in October, when the vineyards take on their autumnal colours.
We enjoyed the peaceful countryside and the scenery of the wine estates.
Thank you to the author for sharing.

@mandrier That's a shame, in my opinion, because the La Ragle stream valley has a certain charm – at least when we visited.

A beautiful, easy hike among olive trees and vineyards, which are very colourful at this time of year. However, we took a shortcut via the Pin Vert path, bypassing points 5 and 6.

A lovely, unpretentious little walk along quiet roads, past pretty vineyards and olive groves.
No difficulty, but a little elevation gain nonetheless (the route is not flat).

@spirob: No problem in my opinion. A bit short for a bike ride, but why not extend it under these conditions, for example by adding the "Walk around the old village of Le Castellet" circular hike - which, it's true, has at least two good hills to climb.

I only knew the main road in Brûlat. But there was also this route through beautiful countryside that is so peaceful for the people who live there. The roadsides are beautifully flowered at this time of year. The PlantNet app could help you identify these flowers. Thanks to stjo for this discovery.
