Description of the walk

From Irun on the N-1 towards San Sebastian, exit at Oyartzun and head up towards Altzibar
on the GI-3631. From there, follow signs for "Artikutxa" and climb up to the end of the road
(13 km) and the "Eskas" or hunters' house car park.

(S/E) From the car park, head due South, following the road for about 300 m.

(1) Enter the forest on a left-hand path (signposted Artikutxa NA-124) which continues due South. Follow this path through the forest for about 1800 m, crossing a stream. The path then bends sharply to the South. Follow it for about 300 m.

(2) Turn left, due East, until you come to a path heading north. Let this path go left and continue East.

(3) A few dozen metres further on, fork left onto the path which gradually climbs North-Eastwards. Reach the edge of the forest.

(4) Continue due North to the crossroads at 650 m.

(5) Turn right towards Izu. Follow this path for approx. 700 m and join a track heading North up the ridge.

(6) Follow the path to the left (North-West) and leave the track running due North on our right. Climb the ridge line and descend to the Bidango Gana pass. Continue opposite (NW), and follow the path to the rocky summit of Burnaiztieta.

(7) Continue along the NW path to Galzarrieta (813 m), then reach the Bianditz summit (844 m).

(8) From the summit, continue due West along the ridge. The scenery is magnificent on a clear day, with the "Peñas de Aya" massif within easy reach. Follow this path (GR® 121) until you reach the GI-3631 road, cross it and descend due South for 70 m to a track.

(9) Turn left on this track, which heads East and reaches the entrance to an old iron and kaolin mine (Artikutxa mine).

(E) As the track climbs back up to the road, follow the path around the hairpin bend to the right, due South, to reach the car park (S/E).

We did this in April: the first part through the forest was very pleasant, followed by a stunning view along the ridge path, dotted with hunting hides – empty at this time of year – so this is a walk to avoid in the autumn. Not very busy. On the descent at point 9, when we reached the road, the path disappeared into the brambles, forcing us to walk along the road for about 400 metres before turning right and finding it again.

A lovely circular route offering a mix of woodland and ridges.
We start with a 2-kilometre descent through the forest, followed by a fairly steep 2-kilometre climb, still through the forest, before heading along beautiful ridges offering superb views of the high Pyrenean peaks as well as the Atlantic coast, all the way to the summit of Bianditz.
We covered the last kilometre via the small road leading to the car park, as the suggested path seemed too overgrown with brambles.
As part of the route winds its way through and very close to pidgeon hunting huts, I would advise against this hike during the pidgeon hunting season.

Hike completed at the end of October in beautiful weather, with sunshine and blue skies.
A magnificent walk through the woods on paths covered with leaves.
A long and difficult climb to reach the ridges and summit of BIANDITZ, but what a view!
This route is best done in good weather to enjoy the views and the woodland.

A very pretty walk, most of which is an unmarked circuit. In particular, it is impossible without the app to turn off at the right place when you leave the yellow and white signposted walk. After the summit of Bianditz, you come across an enclosure that you have to enter and walk along the fence to the right, otherwise you'll find yourself in bracken and brambles.
We couldn't find the path down to the track at point 9, which was overgrown with brambles, so we followed the road and then found the track a little further on. It took us around 3 and a half hours. We're decent walkers, but of a certain age, so maybe Lannemi made a mistake somewhere?
We did this walk in mid-July and hardly anyone was there, especially off the signposts. Most of the route is shaded. A great time with beautiful views from the ridges and numerous prehistoric remains. There are other hiking possibilities from the car park.

A very nice loop with the first part in a beautiful clean forest with majestic trees up to point 4, then a series of gentle ascents and descents along a wide grassy path on the ridges with magnificent views of all the surrounding peaks and valleys.
However, the walk takes 6 hours 15 minutes (including a 1-hour lunch break and various stops) and not 4 hours 30 minutes as indicated in the summary. We were 3 experienced walkers, who usually respect the times given by Visorando.
Please note
- At point 1, at the signpost you should follow Artikutxa and not Aritzakun as indicated by mistake.
- At point 3, don't forget to turn left and stop following the white and yellow signs.
- At point 9, cross the road and plunge straight into the undergrowth. There's not really a marked path to the mine entrance. Don't hesitate to enter the mine, which is around 60m long, until you reach the exit at the other end.

Do not take this walk during the pigeon hunting season, as there are hunting posts and huts between points 6 and 8.
