Munagirre loop

We start by climbing to the summit of Munagirre (781 m), then follow a path through streams, small waterfalls and a beech forest, discovering the fairly recent ruins of the old Artikutza train, or very old ruins with cromlechs and superb views, either of the coast or of the peaks of the Three Crowns.

Description of the walk

Start: from the Kausoro car park after kilometre 12 of the GI3631 towards Artikutza (for directions by car, see the description in the "Practical Information" section below).

(S/E) Heading towards the far end of the car park, i.e. with your back to the road, you go left, uphill across the field, towards the nearest, clearly visible summit (so don't follow the wide path, which should always be on the right).
This brings you to the first summit, Kausutxiki (638 m). Follow the Red and White markings.

(1) Continue along the ridgeline to Munagirre (781 m), first passing a sculpture of a drum, then arriving at the geodesic point (represented by a cylinder on a large circular base).
Continue almost straight ahead along the ridgeline, then descend to the GI3631 asphalt road.

(2) Turn left for about 250 m, up to the first bend. At this point, descend along the path on the right.
We join PR®-GI 1007 (Artikutzako trenbide zaharra) at the remains of ruined buildings (on the old Artikutza train track).

(3) Follow this PR®-GI 1007 to the left (there are a few Yellow and White markings). There's a steep descent to cross a stream, but after that, the path becomes very wide and unproblematic.

(4) At elevation 540 m, leave the track and take a small path on the right.

(5) After a while, you'll pass a tunnel which you shouldn't take as it's impassable and muddy.
We arrive at the Col de Urmandi, easily recognizable as the intersection of several paths.

(6) We take the wide left-hand path, which we leave almost immediately to take the right-hand path, which is still the PR®-GI 1007.
We arrive at the junction with PR®-GI 1006 (Aiako Arria bihotza).

(7) Turn left onto this new path, which climbs steeply!
We then cross the Basate cromlechs and, on the way down, the superb Oianleku cromlech (a very large magic circle). We then head for the hut (very visible).

(8) Just after the hut, take the right-hand path back to the Kausoro car park (S/E).

Notes

By car:
Cross the border at Béhobie and take the GI-636 towards San Sebastian, staying on this road until you see Leroy Merlin on your left and City Wok on your right.
At this point, get into the right-hand lane to take the Errenteria-Oiartzun GI-2132 exit (at the Repsol petrol station).
At the traffic circle, take the GI-2132 Oiartzun exit for 3 km, passing under a bridge.
At the traffic circle, follow GI-2132 Oiartzun 3 km to the left: 3rd exit.
At the traffic circle, follow signs for AP8-Donostia and GI-2132 Astigarraga 8 km (straight ahead).
At the traffic circle, GI-2132 Astigarraga 8 km and Aiako Harria nature park.

At the next traffic circle, turn left onto GI-3631 towards Artikutza and Aiako Harria Nature Park. Drive along a narrow, winding road and park at the Kausoro parking lot after kilometre 12 of this GI3631 road (towards Artikutza). The car park is located on the right-hand side of the road (rectangular parking lot) around 700 m after kilometre 12 and just after a parachute sign.

Return:
Descend the 12 km or so of the GI-3631. Pass Altzibar and then Ugaldetxo. Continue on this GI-3631 until you reach the traffic circles, then take direction Irun GI2132.
Follow GI-2132 Errenteria and/or GI-636 IRUN through the 3 traffic circles.
Continue to the border.

Worth a visit

Please note: the word cromlech comes from Breton, where "crom" means "circle" and "lech" means "place". These cromlechs date back to the Stone Age and were used as funerary monuments.

Please note: In Spain, a PR®-GI followed by a number is used to designate a short walk/route (pequeño recorrido) that takes place in the province of Gipuzkoa (GI). It is therefore not a French Federation marker.
In France, PR® means Promenade and Randonnée.

Always be cautious and plan ahead when you're outdoors. Visorando and the author of this route cannot be held responsible for any accidents occurring on this route.

A very nice hike on several types of pleasant paths with no difficulties whatsoever. It climbs well from the start up to point 2 and also between points 7 and 8. These climbs are on lovely grassy paths that are fairly short with a reasonable gradient. At point 8 there is a lovely picnic area with tables and even a hut for shelter 1 hour from the finish. Beautiful views of the ridges and clean undergrowth (but no mushrooms for the time). Walk completed within the time indicated, including a 30-minute lunch break.
