The Bassin de la Mer from the Bassin de la Paix

Located on the Rivière des Roches, these two pools are very well known and always have water, even at the end of the dry season. The walk is a round trip from Bassin de la Paix to Bassin de la Mer via a very easy trail with numerous viewpoints, particularly over Bassin de la Mer, which is paradoxically located upstream. Ideal for children (under supervision, however). The ground is fairly clayey with few stones, except around the second pool.

Description of the walk

If you are arriving via the N2, take the Beauvallon exit, head towards the sea and, fairly quickly, turn left towards Bassin de la Paix (signposted). Go back under the N1 and follow the road that runs alongside the Rivière des Roches to the Bassin de la Paix car park. The road is not in very good condition. The area is quite busy, so parking can be tricky

(S/E). The starting point is at the bridge over the river just at Bassin de la Paix: enjoy the view from the bridge. Then stay on the right bank of the river and start the walk by following the farm track that passes between sugar cane fields. At the beginning, the valley is quite wide, which allows for the planting of cane fields, then it narrows and the track becomes a path that is still very passable: there are practically no stony areas.

(1) At this point, the path overlooks the river with only a small barrier tape for safety: with children, this is where you need to be careful. About thirty metres further on, a permanent stream covers the path for about 50 metres: the stones are a little slippery. You are now almost at the end of the outward journey.

(2) Ignore a very steep staircase that descends to the right towards the Bassin de la Mer: access is prohibited! Instead, continue for a good hundred metres and descend a few steps to reach the magnificent viewpoint over the Bassin de la Mer and its waterfall: be careful, there is no protective barrier.

(3) Turn around and follow the same path in the opposite direction to return to the car park (S/E).

Notes

Remember to bring drinking water. Although the trail is not difficult, good walking shoes are recommended. Only part of the hike is shaded.

In October 2025, the traces of the cyclone are still clearly visible in part of the valley.

Worth a visit

The various pools, the vegetation, lots of birds.

More than just a hike, this involves reaching the Sea Pool in 45 minutes from the Peace Pool, so you can access it, swim there and explore the two waterfalls either from the water or from the viewpoint.
To reach the pool, you must take the very steep staircase at point 2, which is not off-limits but requires good ‘off-trail’ skills on a steep slope for about 20 metres. More than manageable for those under 70...
Once in the water, you can swim across the basin, covering a width of about twenty metres, and get a clear view of the first waterfall (as well as the second, which is visible as soon as you enter the water).
Alternatively, with your feet in the water (up to your neck or so), you can follow the rock on the right bank to reach the first waterfall; it’s nothing too difficult. The terrain is very variable, so you do need to be able to swim, just in case.
Alternatively, skip the descent at point 2 (a shame) and continue to point 3 for a bird’s-eye view of the pool and its two waterfalls.
In this rather wet season (March), the ground is slightly muddy in places, but not enough to warrant wearing waders.
In short, a lovely pool to cool off in.
