Description of the walk

Access: Coming from the D976, cross the village of Azay-sur-Cher to reach the Cher river. Park in the car park by the river, below the bridge, on the left-hand side of the road.

Please note! This route is not signposted as such

(S/E) Go back up the road and retrace your steps towards the village for a few metres. When you reach the Grande Rue, continue straight ahead along a lane and turn right shortly afterwards, following the yellow signs onto the Allée de l'Abbé Guillot. At the junction with the Rue de Cormery, continue straight ahead until you reach the D976.

(1) Follow the D976 on your right for a few metres (take care!) and turn into the first street on the left. Immediately afterwards, take a path on the left. Cross the Ruisseau de la Gitonnière and turn right just after. On the street, turn right again and continue until you reach Rue de la Feuille d'Or.

(2) Continue straight ahead, following the yellow signs. Continue south on Rue des Vignes, which becomes a path and leads to Rochecave. Continue straight ahead until you reach a crossroads.

(3) Turn left onto Rue Chandion. Continue straight ahead to the end of the street, at the hamlet of La Folie. Turn left onto Rue des Serrault.

(4) At the next crossroads, turn left and take the first street on the right, Allée de Bouchélin. Continue straight ahead on the path that extends from this alley until you reach the hamlet of Bouchélin. Then turn right and continue until you reach a crossroads.

(5) Turn right. Ignore a path that branches off to the left and, at the next three-way junction, turn left to reach the hamlet of Le Patouillard.

(6) At the crossroads, turn left and then take the first road on the right to cross the hamlet of Haute Maison. Shortly after this hamlet, look out for a path that branches off to the left.

(7) Take this path, which soon turns at a right angle to the east.

(8) At the intersection, turn left, cross the D976 again (be careful!) and continue straight ahead towards the Voie Creuse. Shortly after this hamlet, you will come to a crossroads.

(9) Continue straight ahead on a path. At the T-junction, turn right before reaching the banks of the Cher and theGR®®41(white and red markings).

(10) Turn right onto theGR®® to follow the Cher upstream.

(11) The needle dam and the Moulin de Nitray are located on the other bank. Shortly afterwards, continue along this path, which turns right to reach the houses of Nitray.

(12) At the crossroads, leave theGR®®41, turn left and continue straight ahead towards the east until you reach Petit Chandon and the D83.

(13) Go up the D83 on the right for a few metres (be careful!) then take the first road on the right, which is a hairpin bend. You will then see theGR®®41signposts. Follow these signs and turn left onto the path.

(14) At the next junction, turn right onto another path overlooking the valley. At the junction with the road, turn right and descend towards the hamlet of Nitray.
At the crossroads, turn left to follow a small section of the route you took on the way there.

(12) At the next crossroads, continue straight ahead on a path. Continue straight ahead until you reach a crossroads you encountered earlier in

(9) Continue straight ahead. You can't miss the beautiful Château de Beauvais and its large wooded park on your left. Continue straight ahead on this path, which soon joins the banks of the Cher. You will eventually come to the Azay-sur-Cher bridge. Pass under the bridge to return to the car park (S/E).

This is a very popular route for local hiking clubs.
With a slight variation, we tend to use the smaller paths that run alongside the Cher river (depending on the weather, as they can be quite muddy).
Very flat terrain, with only one small difficulty...

A very beautiful hike alternating between paths in the woods, open fields and along the banks of the Cher River. The route is very pleasant.
The only point to note, as mentioned by "Gogo", is that after point 9, at the T-junction with the GR 41, you need to turn right. If you turn left, at point 10 you will end up at a fish farm created along the Cher, which you will not be able to cross. That said, this allowed us to picnic in this area along the Cher

An interesting hike with no difficulty. The banks of the Cher are very pleasant and Beauvais Castle is magnificent.
Note: after point 9, at the T-junction with the GR 41, turn right. If you turn left at point 10, you will end up at a fish farm along the Cher, which you will not be able to cross.
A suggestion: like many people, we prefer footpaths to tarmac roads. From point 12 to the finish, the road is uninteresting. Why not return via the GR 41 and the banks of the Cher, which include a section not used on the way there? All you need to do is make a short return trip on the road to see Beauvais Castle.

Very pleasant hike, beautiful views of the castles. Picnic on the way to Nitray. Nice encounter with Michèle, the keeper of the Nitray needle dam, who is passionate about the history of her dam and whom we had a hard time leaving! We extended our hike a little to the port of Chandon.

This route is best enjoyed in spring and autumn when the vegetation is at its most colourful. Beautiful residences and a charming mill. Picnic near the Nitray mill or at the starting point on the way there or back at a picnic area currently under development. Some work to improve the cycle path along the Cher river is currently spoiling the site a little. A beautiful walk with no particular difficulties.

an easy hike with no particular difficulties, pleasant and well marked except for point 9, where we missed the loop and ended up walking 12 km instead of 9

A pleasant hike, with frequent views from high points along the route; a bit too much tarmac for my liking. On the day we went, we were the only people on the trail, so it was very peaceful. A few dogs guard the properties, and there are some donkeys and horses in the meadows. Beauvais Castle is magnificent and the needle dam is very interesting; the needles are stored along the path during winter. My GPS recorded 13.6 km and it took 5 hours and 20 minutes, including a picnic.

Hello
I've simplified the description for WP9 a little. It's actually very simple: just go straight ahead on both the outward and return journeys.
It's true that the route mainly follows (small) roads. It's a good ride for winter, when the paths are too muddy

Interesting hike, but many paved sections. The colour of the trail markers is not indicated on the map. Point 9 is very confusing (loop)
