Description of the walk

In Vernou-sur-Brenne, leave your car in the village, in the Saint-Vincent car park, not far from the church.
This route is not signposted as such.

(S/E) The car park is on the edge of a grassy dyke. Climb onto the dyke and turn left. Continue along the dyke until you reach the road.

(1) Turn right, cross the Brenne, cross the D46 and continue straight ahead for a few metres, then turn right. Pass a road on your left.

(2) Turn left at the next intersection. This small road turns into a path and leads to another road. Turn left. You will end up in front of a water tower. Continue along the road on the left, which descends further on.

(3) 50 m before a group of houses, find theGR®®655Ouest(white and red markings) to follow on the right. Stay on thisGR®® until otherwise indicated. Continue straight ahead to the hamlet of Peu Morier. Take the road on the right and continue on the road when it turns left.

(4) Shortly afterwards, turn right onto the dirt track. Continue straight ahead through the vineyards, passing two intersections. At the third intersection, the vineyards give way to fields. Continue straight ahead, leaving a path leading to a house on your right and two other paths on your left. You will come out onto a road.

(5) Continue on the road opposite, through vineyards and fields, straight ahead, until you reach the hamlet of Le Fougeray.

(6) Turn onto the path on the left after the first houses. Continue straight ahead until you enter a small wood. The path descends and leads to a road.

(7) Take the road opposite. At the intersection, turn right and continue along the road, which further on turns left, passes in front of the entrance to the Château de Jallanges and then turns right.

(8) At the three-way junction, before the hamlet of Cassereau, turn right and then, further on, when the path becomes tarmac, take another path on the left. Continue straight ahead to enter the undergrowth. The path descends and veers left then right towards the Cousse valley.

(9) After the first house in the hamlet of La Bataillerie, turn left to rejoin the road. Turn right, continue straight ahead to the crossroads, then straight ahead to the ford where you cross the Cousse on a wooden footbridge.

(10) At the next intersection, turn left, then climb the winding path to the right and immediately to the left. You will arrive back at the top of the hill, surrounded by vineyards. Pass three paths on your left and continue straight ahead until the path becomes paved.

(11) Turn right and continue along the ridge before descending towards Château Gaillard.

(12) Turn right, ignore the road that climbs to the left and then, at the next intersection, turn right. At the next fork, take the path on the left. You will arrive at the hamlet of Launay, where the path becomes tarmac and leads to the D46 road.

(13) Take the small road opposite to Moulin de Bacchus. Go around this property on the right and cross the Brenne river via a small bridge.

(14) Shortly afterwards, leave theGR®®655and take a wide path on the left. Cross the Grande Prairie to reach the edge of the Étang de Chancay. Walk along the lake and continue to the road on the right.

(15) Turn right again at the next intersection. Walk along the other side of the pond and the picnic area. Continue along this road and pass under the LGV bridge. At the next intersection, continue straight ahead, then cross the hamlets of Les Coutières and Charmigny, continuing straight ahead. Further on, cross theGR®® at a crossroads.

(16) Continue straight ahead, leaving the Vau valley on your left, and pass through the hamlets of La Robinière and La Buvinière, thus approaching La Brenne.

(17) Shortly after this last hamlet, take the cycle path on the left of the road towards Vernou. Join the road further on, entering Vernou.

(18) At the intersection, turn left and, after a few metres, climb up to the right onto the dyke and continue to the car park near the church (S/E).

Very pleasant and varied, we did a mix of several routes, vineyards, forests, troglodyte dwellings, and along the Cher river. Excellent!

A very beautiful hike that allows you to discover a less frequented part of Touraine.
The only downside is the last section (the last 4–5 kilometres) on the road, which is much less pleasant to walk along.

Very good hike, the description is good, as is the route. We completed the hike in 4 hours with a 15-minute break. There are 3 good hills, including one at the start of the route.

A few comments on the description:
At point (3), the GR trail marker is not visible. Take the path that opens up on the right at an electrical transformer (or large box), before the street sign for "Rue du CLOS CHAUVIN".
At point (8), in my opinion, the three-way junction is more of a fork.
At point (10), it should be specified that before "becoming" tarmac, the path ceases to be a path, whereas it was previously.
I think I only saw two paths on the left, not three, but I'm not certain.

The first part of the route is superb, with forest paths...
The return journey along the straight road was less enjoyable.

Walk taken in early spring. No topographical difficulties, as part of the route follows the GR655 trail. It is a very pleasant route that winds through the beautiful Vouvray vineyards and also allows you to discover the beautiful Cousse valley. There is a lovely picnic area on the edge of the Chançay lake.
I recommend this beautiful walk, which is accessible to all.
We took a shortcut after point No. 2, when we arrived at the water tower: you can continue straight on for about 400 metres through the vineyards and you will arrive at the route after point No. 4 at a crossroads. This reduces the walk to about 16km.

The explanations are very precise. Pressed for time, we went directly from point 14 to point 16, covering a distance of 15 km.
A very beautiful walk. Thank you very much.

Hello,

Thank you for writing this review and introducing us to this route, which combines grassy paths and roads (less than 40% certainly).

I really enjoyed this route, including the beautiful lake at Chançay, despite the high-speed trains passing less than 100 metres away (what a shame!).

Except for the short stretch (2 km?) on this narrow road where two cars have to be careful to pass each other. Since there is no room to walk on the sides, it's a bit scary. I'm talking about the road between 16 and 17.

Thank you very much.
